Marysville Raceway Dirt Track News
- Shane Golobic surges to 14th career SCCT win on Thursday at Marysville Raceway
Marysville, CA…Shane Golobic made his first start of SCCT Speedweek count on Thursday night at Marysville Raceway, as he drove to his 14th career Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour triumph. With the win the Fremont native now moves back out front all by himself as the all-time leader in SCCT victories. "It's nice to get a win during our first start of SCCT Speedweek here in Marysville," Golobic said following the race. "It was a tricky track tonight, but luckily, we were able to get out front and set the pace. Hopefully we can carry the momentum into Chico tomorrow and Placerville on Saturday." SCCT Western Sprint Speedweek Round two and three winner Colby Copeland jumped out front at the waving of the green flag in the 35-lapper. Early on Harrisburg, Oregon driver Tyler Thompson hounded the rear of the VSR No. 5v, as he looked for his second victory of Speedweek. Lapped traffic created some excitement during the opening stages of the feature and on lap 10, Shane Golobic went two for one, getting by both Thompson and Golobic in one fell swoop. Several yellows slowed the flow of the contest after that, but through it all, Golobic remained calm, cool and collected. The driver of the NOS Energy Drink No. 17w had his way with things out front and went on to cross under the Darin Stahl checkered flag for victory. Auburn's Andy Forsberg made a late pass to secure the runner up position and in doing so, became the brand new SCCT season long point leader. It also marked his third podium of SCCT Speedweek. Thompson, Shane Hopkins and Dylan Bloomfield rounded out the top-five. Completing the top-10 in the main event were Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Tanner Carrick, who came from 17th to sixth over Copeland, Nick Parker, Dawson Hammes and Steel Powell. With four rounds complete in SCCT Speedweek, Colby Copeland continues to lead the standings by 13-points over Tyler Thompson. Forsberg sits 15-digits back in third, with Shane Hopkins 19-points behind in fourth. Dylan Bloomfield rounds out the top-five. The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour will continue Western Sprint Speedweek at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on Friday. The event marks the annual Tyler Wolf Memorial. - Colby Copeland goes back-to-back in SCCT Speedweek action at The Douglas County Dirt Track
Roseburg, Oregon…For the second consecutive night with SCCT Speedweek it was the Colby Copeland show, as the Roseville driver checked out and cruised to victory at The Douglas County Dirt Track on Wednesday. Copeland was able to stretch his Speedweek point lead to 21-markers over Tyler Thompson heading into tomorrow's show at Marysville Raceway. His win in Roseburg, Oregon was career triumph number five with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour. The initial start of the 30-lap finale saw Medford, Oregon's Bailey Hibbard get upside down to bring out a red flag. He emerged okay but was done for the event. When things got going again it was Langley, BC driver Levi Klatt leading the opening lap, before Copeland shot by to grab the point. Despite Copeland rocketing away from the field, the action behind him remained extremely entertaining, as cars sliced and diced on the well-prepared surface. Yuba City youngster Seth Standley drove another impressive race jumping into second on lap six. Standley hung onto second until lap 21 when Corbin Rueschenberg made the pass. Shortly after that, a red flag period occurred and during it, Standley had a fuel leak that put an unfortunate end to his feature. There was no stopping Copeland up front who blitzed away and hid for the win. Rueschenberg crossed the stripe in second to earn his second straight runner up finish, while Dominic Gorden kept things exciting, as he rode the high side to a third-place result. Levi Klatt and Oregon racer Garen Linder rounded out the top-five. Completing the top-10 were Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Shane Hopkins, who carved his way from 15th to sixth over Dylan Bloomfield, Tyler Thompson, Braden Chiaramonte and Andy Forsberg. Chiaramonte also thrilled the crowd on hand by running the fonz until getting into the wall and suffering a flat tire while battling around the top-five. After going to the work area, he rebounded in ninth to maintain his SCCT point lead. A total of 24 cars competed on night three of SCCT Speedweek. Andy Forsberg began the evening by earning the Sierra Foothills Wine Services Fast Time Award with a lap of 13.274. The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour will continue Western Sprint Speedweek at the Marysville Raceway on Thursday July 18th. - Marysville Raceway assumes July 18th SCCT Speedweek date with Yreka cancelation
Marysville, CA…Sprint Car Challenge Tour officials have announced an update to the SCCT Western Sprint Speedweek schedule. Due to fires in the area, Yreka Speedway has been forced to cancel their scheduled Thursday July 18th Speedweek stop. The track is still able to hold this weekend's Sport Mod event however, once that is completed, a full fire camp will move in, making it unable to operate the dirt track. Thanks to Promoter Dennis Gage the Thursday July 18th date will now be held at Marysville Raceway. It marks the second appearance of the season at the track for the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour. Pit gate will open at 2pm, with front gate opening at 5. "Yreka Speedway was looking forward to hosting the Sprint Car Challenge Tour for Speedweek, but due to the fires up there it just won't be possible," commented SCCT President Scott Russell. "I want to send a big thank you to Dennis Gage for being kind enough to let us run Marysville Raceway in its place and keep Speedweek in its original format with six races at six different tracks." The overall SCCT Speedweek champion will continue to take home $3,000 as part of a $6,000 total point fund. The runner up nets $2,000, while third place will claim $1,000. - Andy Forsberg Picks Up Pair of Victories During 4th of July Week
A very busy 4th of July holiday saw Andy Forsberg and the Pacific Highway Rentals team take part in three different races and score two feature event wins as they took top honors at Marysville Raceway and Placerville Speedway.
- BRADEN CHIARAMONTE WAS SPRINT CAR CHALLENGE TOUR HARD CHARGER AT PLACERVILLE
(El Cajon, CA, June 5, 2024) One of the sure things in West Coast Sprint Car racing is the fact that teenage sensation Braden Chiaramonte is not afraid to pass cars. Last Friday, at the Dave Bradway Jr Memorial opening night at the Placerville Speedway, the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour rookie demonstrated that by passing more cars in the main event than any other driver. Stuck back in 21st to start the 35-lap main, he raced under the checkered flag in 13th place. This Saturday night, he makes his first appearance at the Petaluma Speedway when the SCCT visits town. A stout 40-car field converged on the famous high-banked red clay quarter-mile oval for round five of the 2024 SCCT season. For El Cajon, California-based Chiaramonte, the series rookie point leader, who was wheeling the Tiner/Hirst Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition #94TH, it was his second showing at the track this year. The first appearance came three weeks earlier when he placed second in the regular Placerville 360 main event. That finish came just 24 hours after a third-place finish at another iconic California track, the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. Chiaramonte qualified with 19 other cars in group A. His best lap, an 11.142, was 13th in the group and 25th fastest of the 40 winged cars on hand. That placed him on the inside of the fourth row of the first 10-lap heat race on the freshly watered track. He needed to place in the top five to earn a ticket directly to the A main. However, passing was at a premium at that time of the night. Only four cars, including Chiaramonte, advanced their position in the race, and all of them only moved up one spot. His sixth place finish left him one position shy of going straight into the main. Starting third in the B main, Chiaramonte initially was running fourth. Staying dedicated to the high side of the 59-year-old track, he started flying on lap four and began picking off cars. Eventually getting up to second, he was dramatically closing on the leader who had a full straightaway advantage at one point. Coming off turn four with two laps to go, a lapped car spun to a stop directly in front of the young driver. With cat-like reflexes, Chiaramonte hit the brakes and steered to the inside. His car gained traction, the front wheels shot into the air, and he wheelied past the stopped car in spectacular fashion. With three laps to go, Chiaramonte restarted the B main in second. Going into turn three, he used a textbook slide job to take the lead and impressively led the final three laps, earning himself a ticket into the A main. To say Chiaramonte was starting deep in the main event field was an understatement. He was on the inside of the next to last row for the 35-lapper! Early on, he momentarily slipped back to 23rd. The young driver skillfully avoided the chaos that saw yellow and red flags in the main and methodically moved his way forward. By races end, his impressive performance saw him go all the way forward to 13th. While he officially passed eight cars as the PitStopUSA.com Hard Charger, being back to 23rd at one point means he raced past 10 other cars. The finish kept Chiaramonte in the sixth position in the SCCT championship chase heading into this week's race at the Petaluma. Keeping up with the team's crazy schedule, Chiaramonte hopped on a flight home to El Cajon early Saturday morning. As soon as he got home, the team jumped into the rig with the family-owned #73B and drove 195 miles to the Ultimate Sprint Car Race presented by Inland Rigging at the Ventura Raceway. Unfortunately, the long trek to Ventura did not have a happy ending. After starting and finishing third in his heat, Chiaramonte started 10th in the main event. However, entering the first corner on lap two, something broke, and he went hard into the crash wall. While the young driver was uninjured, the car sustained substantial damage, and he was out for the night. Fans who wish to see Chiaramonte in action at Petaluma on Saturday can find the track on the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds at 100 Fairgrounds Drive in Petaluma. Spectator gates open at 4:00 PM. Practice will be at 5:00, and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets are $25. For seniors 65 and over and the military, it is $22.00. Juniors 12-15 and kids 6-11 are $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. Chiaramonte flew to North Carolina two weeks ago to drive for his cousin, 2020 NASCAR Truck Champion and current Xfinity Series driver Sheldon Creed, at the famous Millbridge Speedway. Shoeing Creed's 600 Micro for only his second time at the track, he qualified second quickest in his group on Monday. He went from fourth to second in his heat before getting clobbered and having the injection knocked off the car. Despite that, he still finished fourth. In the night's main, he started and finished 16th. Twenty-four hours later, at Millbridge, Chiaramonte qualified 4th in Group B. He started on the outside of the front row for his heat race and picked up the checkered flag for the victory. In that night's main event, he started third. At one point in the race, he drove up to the second-place. In the end, he ended up fifth. His performances on the two nights drew a lot of attention from other drivers, fans in attendance and thousands of others worldwide watching live on DirtVision. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE COMES FROM THE BACK TO FINISH 12TH IN WILD MARYSVILLE MAIN
(El Cajon, CA, May 29) After coming from the back two times, Braden Chiaramonte raced under the checkered flag in 12th place in the Mel and Marlyn Hall Memorial last Saturday at the Marysville Raceway. The teen's persistence paid dividends as he now ranks sixth in points heading into round four of the Elk Grove Sprint Car Challenge Tour's 2024 season at the Placerville Speedway this Friday. A stout field of 39 winged 360 sprint cars showed up at the popular quarter-mile track that is located 120 miles north of San Francisco and 120 miles west of Reno. The field was split into two groups by a pill draw for qualifying and the heat races. Chiaramonte drew into the second group of 19 cars and toured the track in 12.904. That was seventh fastest in his group and 13th best of the 39 on hand. In his 10-lap heat, the El Cajon, California racer started and finished in third. That left him one spot shy of the dash, but it guaranteed him a direct ticket into the 35-lap main event. Chiaramonte started in the 12th position for the feature that turned into a nearly one-hour marathon. The first attempt to start the race got as far as turn one before a car slid to a stop. Fortunately, the entire field missed the expensive obstacle. The second try to get the feature started only got about 35 feet farther than the first effort. This time a massive tangle saw numerous cars get involved. One of them was Chiaramonte. Chiaramonte was towed back to the pits, where the Tiner/Hirst crew quickly poured over the car. They replaced two broken shocks, bird cages, radius rods, torsion arms, and a torsion bar. They got the job done quickly, but the green flag flew before they could get pushed back onto the track. However, the race only got one lap in before the action was slowed due to another faux paw on the track. Amazingly, the #94TH was pushed back onto the racing surface for the restart and was only one lap down. Chiaramonte restarted at the back. As was the case for much of this race, only one more lap was completed. On lap 4, three cars tangled in front of Chiaramonte. With nowhere to go, he slid into the mess. Fortunately, his contact was minimal, and he was able to restart once again. The Night of Destruction like conditions continued on through the remainder of the race, but Chiaramonte was able to steer clear of the chaos. By lap 11, he was up to 16th. Four laps later, he was another spot higher in the race standings. He was still 15th, ten laps later, when officials feared cars were going to run out of fuel due to all the yellow flag laps. So, they threw a red flag, allowing all teams to add fuel to make it to the end of the race. Once the green flag flew again, Chiaramonte moved up to 14th on lap 27. He stayed there until the final circuit when he steered the Tiner/Hirst Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition #94TH past one more car to finish 13th. Make that a hard-fought for, well earned 13th for the talented driver and the top-notch crew. This Friday night's race at the Placerville Speedway will be the lid lifter for the Dave Bradway Memorial. Chiaramonte has been to Placerville one time this year. That was on May 11th when he finished second in the Placerville 360 main event. Friday's show will be Adrian Blanco Jewelry Night. The main winner will collect prize money, valuable SCCT points, and a custom watch certificate from Adrian Blanco Jewelers. The spectator gate at the famous banked red clay oval will open at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors 62+, military, and Juniors 12-17 will get in for $22.00. Tickets for kids six to twelve are only $10, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets are available online at https://www.eventsprout.com/event/psr-053124 and at the ticket window on Friday. The Placerville Speedway is located on the beautiful El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville, California. Take Hwy US-50 to Forni Road/Placerville Drive exit. Then go north on Placerville Drive to the Fairgrounds. The physical address is 100 Placerville Dr., Placerville, CA 95667. - Justin Sanders makes it three in a row to begin SCCT season
Marysville, CA…Aromas, California's Justin Sanders continued to his torrid pace to start the Sprint Car Challenge Tour season, racing to his third victory in as many races on Saturday at Marysville Raceway's Mel & Marlyn Hall Memorial. With extra money raised by the Hall Family and the Shop Kyle Larson Bonus factored in, Sanders and car owner Dale Miller walked out of Marysville $3,500 richer. It marked Sanders' 11th career Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour triumph and his second at the Mel & Marlyn Hall Memorial. "It's been a great start to the season for this Dale Miller Septic 4SA team," Sanders commented in victory lane. "You had to be really patient through all the stoppages and luckily, we were able to get past Tanner Carrick there for the lead. I can't thank everybody enough who supports this car." The 35-lap main event for the SCCT 360s began with outside front row starter Michael Faccinto looping it to a stop in the opening corner. Unfortunately, it was a precursor of things to come, as several slow downs plagued the contest. When going green Lincoln's Tanner Carrick set the early pace, as he raced to close to home on Saturday. Sanders stalked the tail tank of the TC Guide Service No. 83T with drivers battling for position throughout the field. Right around lap 20 traffic came into play and created the race changing pass up front. With Carrick getting a bit tight off turn two Sanders charged around to scoop up the lead that he would never relinquish. Persevering through a handful of more restarts, he drove off to accept the checkered flag. Carrick crossed the stripe in second followed by 10th starter Shane Hopkins in the High Sierra Industries No. 21, who had a career best night with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour. It was back-to-back solid performances for the Placerville driver, after also bringing home a podium in Placerville two weeks back. Oakley's Dylan Bloomfield aboard the Vertullo Racing No. 83v and Roseville's Sean Becker in the Monhoff Racing No. 35 completed the top-five. The remainder of the top-10 was filled out by Andy Forsberg, who was one of many drivers who went to the rear at one point, Travis Labat, Dominic Gorden, Austin Wood and 20th starter Dawson Hammes. Steel Powell carved his way from 23rd to 11th, earning the Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Award. William Fielding took home the $100 first non-transfer award courtesy of D&D Roofing. Ryan Bernal picked off the B-main, while Tanner Carrick captured the High Sierra Industries Dash. Heat race wins went to Dylan Bloomfield, Travis Labat, Tanner Carrick and Colby Copeland. A strong field of 39 cars competed on Saturday night with Justin Sanders earning his third straight Sierra Foothills Wine Services fast time award to begin the campaign. He toured the quarter mile in 12.446 seconds. The Hall Family must be commended for their efforts in raising extra money for the racers on Saturday. The A-main was elevated to a minimum of $3,000-to-win/ $500-to-start, along with additional money added to the B-main thanks to the Hall Family and all the generous donors. The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour now gets set to take part in opening night of the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial at Placerville Speedway this coming Friday. - Justin Sanders with the SCCT win at Marysville
Marysville Raceway (May 25, 2024)- Justin Sanders picked up the Sprint Car Challenge Tour 35 lap feature Saturday night at Marysville Raceway. Sanders was chased by Tanner Carrick, Shane Hopkins, Dylan Bloomfield and Sean Becker.
- BRADEN CHIARAMONTE GETS THIRD PODIUM FINISH IN EIGHT DAYS
(El Cajon, CA, May 23) Rising teenage star Braden Chiaramonte scored a podium finish in the Tiner/Hirst-owned 94TH sprint car for the third time in eight days. His latest effort came when he placed second last Saturday night at the Marysville Raceway. The finish went along with his third-place result at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on May 10th and a second-place finish at Placerville on the 11th. Chiaramonte will return to Marysville this Saturday with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour in the Mel and Marlyn Hall Memorial. The most amazing aspect of Chiaramonte's accomplishment from last week is that he had never seen the Marysville oval before. Yet, he performed flawlessly all night, from hot laps through the main event. The second-place finish sounds amazing, but it could have been more. The friendly young driver actually took the lead away on lap 20 of the main event. However, a yellow flag seconds after he took the lead reverted the lineup to the previous completed lap. Fans began to sit up and take notice of Chiaramonte in qualifying. Even though he was pitted against 24 track regulars, he still qualified third fastest with a sizzling lap of 12.637 in the Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition sponsored car. He backed that impressive performance up with a very exciting win in the third eight-lap heat race. After a slider fest with another car at the outset, the new kid on the block led all eight laps and raced across the line a half straightaway ahead of his closest pursuer. In addition to winning the heat, he also posted the fastest lap in the race at 13.325. The newcomer to the track gave the regulars more to worry about when he pulled a two in the redraw for the 25-lap finale. When the A main started, Chiaramonte was second to turn one on the start. The determined teen challenged the cushion lap after lap. When lapped traffic came into play on the 11th circuit, he tried to pass the leader on the inside coming off turn four. However, the surface was definitely "Cowboy Up" on the bottom, making it hard to pass. Undeterred, Chiaramonte was relentless in his pursuit of the leader. Building up momentum on the wide line, he chased down his foe and inched ahead when that yellow waved as the pack roared into turn one on lap 20. That meant the field was reset to the last completed lap. Thus, Chiaramonte moved back to second. Once the race restarted, the El Cajon, California teen kept the heat on until the checkered flag. In the end, he was forced to settle for second. The impressive second-place finish endeared the newcomer to the crowd. He was spectacular on the outside and may have well won the race if not for the late-race yellow. Lap eight was Chiaramonte's best circuit around the track in the main at 13.325. It was the second-fastest lap in the race, and identical to his best time in his heat race. Going into this week's SCCT show at Marysville, Chiaramonte is 13th in series points and is only 20 points out of fifth. The race will mark the beginning of four straight weeks of SCCT racing for the young driver and the remainder of the series regulars. On Friday, May 31st, it will be on to the Placerville Speedway, where Chiaramonte finished second two weeks ago in a non-SCCT race. A week later, on June 8th, he will be at the Petaluma Speedway before heading to Antioch Speedway on June 15th. Adult tickets at Marysville Raceway on Saturday are $24.00. Juniors 12-15, seniors 62+, and military are $20. Kids 6-11 cost $10.00, and those five and under will be free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or via https://www.eventsprout.com/event/marysville-raceway-2024. The front gate will open at 5:00 p.m. Cars hit the track at 5:30, with hot laps, Sierra Foothills Wine Services qualifying, and racing to follow. - SCCT begins busy stint with Hall Memorial at Marysville Saturday
Marysville, CA…The busiest stretch of the season for the Sprint Car Challenge Tour gets underway this Saturday with the 24th running of the "Mel & Marlyn Hall Memorial" at Marysville Raceway. This Saturday's event marks the third race of the season for the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour. The first two rounds in Stockton and Merced last month were claimed by Aromas driver Justin Sanders and Dale Miller Racing. Sanders, the 2018 winner of the Mel & Marlyn Hall Memorial, currently sits atop the standings over Fremont's Shane Golobic, Penngrove's Chase Johnson, Oakley's Dylan Bloomfield and Clovis' Dominic Gorden. Last season saw Auburn's Andy Forsberg match Colby Wiesz for the most all-time wins at the event, having claimed his sixth career Hall Memorial checkered flag. The show in Marysville this Saturday launches four consecutive weeks of racing for the SCCT 360s, with an event at Placerville Speedway coming up on Friday May 31st, followed by Petaluma Speedway on June 8th and all culminating at Antioch Speedway June 15th. Racing was certainly a passion of the Hall family. They epitomized the great strengths of being at the forefront of the sport when it came to on-track racing and off-track promotions. Mel Hall believed in a united Sprint Car traveling organization and in the early 1990's was one of the founding fathers of the Civil War Series, which is fundamentally what the Sprint Car Challenge Tour continues in the Golden State. With their unmeasurable work ethic, the Halls were heavily involved in the now defunct Ernie Purcell Speedway in Grass Valley, before taking over operation of Twin Cities Speedway (now Marysville Raceway) in late 1994. Hall is credited with bringing professional Sprint Car racing to the Yuba-Sutter facility, which persists to this very day under the current management of Gage Promotions. The Hall's left their ego at the door and did the things needed for a successful series and management of Marysville Raceway. They never did this for fame and glory or pats on the back. They were simple people who had a vision and did the best they could to make it a reality. Mel passed away on May 22, 1999 and we lost Marlyn in August of 2020. The event held in their memory remains a cornerstone on the track schedule.
