- LEWIS PREVAILS AT PERRIS USAC CRA SEASON FINALE
Ricky Lewis doesn’t always compete in the Avanti Windows & Doors USAC CRA Sprint Car Series, but when he does, he prefers to win. For the third time in less than a month, the Camarillo, Calif. racer came away with a USAC CRA victory, this time doing so in the series’ season finale on Saturday night at California’s Perris Auto Speedway.
- THREE RACES REMAIN ON LOGAN WILLIAMS 2024 USAC/CRA SPRINT CAR SERIES SCHEDULE
(Ontario, CA, October 31, 2024) Rising California sprint car star Logan Williams begins the final two weekends of his 2024 season this Friday and Saturday, November 1st and 2nd, in the 57th Annual Avanti Windows and Doors Western World Championships at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway. The 28-year-old will bring the final curtain down on his season at Perris Auto Speedway on November 9th. For Williams, who comes into the race sixth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA championship standings, 2024 is the third straight year that he has competed in the famous Western World Championships. His best outing in the race came in last year's preliminary night when he finished eighth. Williams, who resides in Yorba Linda, California, spent time away from racing last week. Two weeks ago, he ran back-to-back nights when USAC/CRA made its first-ever visit to the quarter-mile Imperial Valley Raceway. Opening night, he qualified eighth fastest and placed third in his heat. Starting on the outside of the front row in the main. Williams, 28, raced within the top five until getting caught up in someone else's mess later in the race. Unfortunately, that scrape resulted in him getting saddled with an 18th-place finish. Twenty-four hours later, Williams rebounded nicely from the first night. He qualified in the 15th spot. He steered the pretty #5W under the checkered flag in second place in his 10-lap heat race. Unfortunately, he had to start 15th in the main event. However, he put on a crowd pleasing show once the race began. After starting 13th, he passed six cars and finished the 30 lapper in seventh. Only two other drivers passed more cars than Williams in the exciting race. This week will be the third appearance for National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Rip Williams' youngest son at Mohave this year. Thus far, he has finished in the ninth and 12th places at "Arizona's Baddest Bullring" in 2024. The ninth was his best finish at the track since USAC/CRA started heading there in 2022. Fans who cannot make it to Mohave Valley to see Williams and all the other stars in person can watch both nights live on Flo Racing. Gates at the Mohave Valley Raceway will open at 5:00 p.m. each day, with racing at 7:00. An adult two-day ticket is $45.00. Single-day tickets are $25.00 for adults and $15.00 for children. Online advance tickets are available until November 1st at 12:00 a.m. Central Standard Time at https://www.myracepass.com/tracks/2145/tickets/1413705. It is cash only for tickets (no ATMs on site). Concessions, souvenirs, and the beer garden take cash or cards. For more information, the track website is https://www.mohavevalleyraceway.com/, and the office phone is (928) 346-6000. The track is located at 2750 Laguna Road in Mohave Valley, California. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR HEADS TO MOHAVE VALLEY FOR THE 57TH WESTERN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
(Chino, CA, October 30, 2024) With a dazzling new wrap on his hauler, Eddie Tafoya Jr. is ready for the biggest race of his 2024 season this Friday and Saturday, November 1st and 2nd, at the Mohave Valley Raceway. The event is the historic 57th annual Avanti Windows and Doors Western World Championships for the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. Each night, the program will feature full shows with qualifying, heat races, and main events. The two nights of racing this weekend will take place at one of Tafoya's favorite tracks. The racy 1/3 mile banked oval, which is just minutes from the Colorado River and less than a half hour from downtown Laughlin, Nevada, is known for some of the best wheel-to-wheel action in the country. Every time he is there, Tafoya is in the thick of the wild battles, and he can usually be found rim-riding at the top. "I don't know if it is the track shape, or maybe the banking, I am just really confident getting the car in there," Tafoya said before his last trip to Mohave in October. "Ever since I was there the first time, I have had a good base setup. I just jell well (there). So, it is really exciting to go back there. I think that is the only track I have been good at every single time. I need to figure out what I am doing there and carry it on to the other places." This weekend will be Tafoya's third time at the track this year. He placed in the top 10 in his first two appearances. On April 6th, the 27-year-old veteran racer was the second-fastest qualifier on the night. He started sixth in his heat race and moved forward to finish fourth. That night, he began the main event on the inside of row three in fifth and placed six. Last month, when Tafoya returned to battle on the edge-of-your-seat track, he turned in the eighth-fastest qualifying time and dazzled the crowd with a brave ride around the top to win the second 10-lap heat race. He began the 30-lap feature in the eighth spot and finished seventh. The first time he ever saw the "Copper State" track on April 22nd, 2022, he finished third in the USAC/CRA main event. "Driving-wise, it is one of my favorite racetracks," Tafoya said. "You can be really aggressive for most of the night until it slicks off. Even when it was slick last year, I think I was the only one running the top until I got to the front and showed those guys that. It is fun, and it is a racy little place. Hopefully, some moisture stays in the dirt for us." Gates at Mohave Valley Raceway will open at 5:00 p.m. each day, with racing at 7:00. Tafoya will wrap up the USAC/CRA portion of his season on November 9th at Perris Auto Speedway. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, Inland Rigging, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting its racing program. - FINAL 2024 NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY SATURDAY, ALONG WITH TRICK OR TREATING
(Perris, CA, October 22, 2024) The leaves are beginning to change colors, and cooler temperatures are starting to present themselves, which can only mean one thing for racetracks. The season is coming to an end. Perris Auto Speedway still has two events left before its 28th season comes to a conclusion on November 9th. The first of the two events is this Saturday, October 26th, when LKQ Pick Your Part Presents the final Night of Destruction of the season. In addition to racing on Saturday, the track will host its annual Halloween Night. During intermission, all of the drivers and cars will park on the front straightaway to pass out candy to the kids. As well as the candy giveaway, there will be Halloween Costume contests for the youngsters. "This is always one of our favorite nights of the year," promoter Don Kazarian said. "Not only because of the crazy action supplied by Night of Destruction presented by LKQ Pick Your Part but also seeing all the kids in costumes in the grandstands. It has become a tradition for us to have all the kids on the track at intermission, collecting candy from the drivers and then having a costume contest for them as well. We pride ourselves on always presenting great racing and also on presenting clean, fun shows the entire family can enjoy." "Not only for our fans, but for our drivers as well, this is the last Night of Destruction, until 2025," Kazarian continued. "That means it is going to be a rough and tumble night. It is always one of the wildest nights of the year and is a no-holds-barred showdown, as the drivers have a few months to fix their cars before the first event of the 2025 season. It is going to be an edge-of-your-seat night of action." The biggest story coming into Saturday's show surrounds Earl Cox Jr. The son of famous Ascot Figure 8 driver Earl Cox Sr., the Norco, California resident, has won all seven Figure 8 main events staged at the Riverside County speedplant this season. While he already has one hand on his fourth track Figure 8 championship and the second in a row, the attention will be focused on whether he can become the first Figure 8 driver to have a perfect season at Perris. The title would also break the tie between Cox and Beaumont's Jesse Gordon, who are currently deadlocked with three championships each. Gordon is second in points going into Saturday and still has a mathematical chance of stealing the crown. Riverside's Alex Kiss holds a slender nine-point lead over San Jacinto's Trebor Stephens in the Demo Cross class. However, Stephens, who is the defending class champion, may be the favorite going into Saturday's race, as Kiss may miss the night of action to attend a friend's wedding. San Diego's Daniel Soto, who drives the crowd favorite "Impaler," is the only other driver with a mathematical chance to win the Demo Cross title. For the second season in a row, Whittier's Michael Schattilly will be crowned Figure 8 Trailer race champion. He comes into the night 63 points ahead of second-place Brett Wayland of Corona. With only 60 points available, that title is already sewn up. Wayland is only three markers ahead of Robb Multhaupt Jr. of Orange. So, second place is yet to be decided. The fight for the mini-stock championship is nearly sewn up as well. Steven Green Sr. leads Steven Green Jr. by 45 points. While 60 points are awarded to the winner, the race pays 30 points just to start. Thus, if Steve Sr. starts the main event, he would be guaranteed to extend that lead to 75 points. Even with a win, Steve Jr. could not catch him at that point. Last year's champ, Kris Martin of Riverside, is third. Another class where the championship has already been decided is the crowd-favorite Double Deckers. The "Bug Ya' Later" drivers, Lonnie Skillman and Don McCall, have an insurmountable lead going into the finale. The overall Iron Man championship, which combines all the classes, will come down to two drivers on Saturday. Those two are Schattilly and Multhaupt. Schattilly has a 93-point lead going into the night. However, each of the two competes in three classes. Thus, 180 points are available. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM on the 26th, and the crashing will begin at 7:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Kids six to 12 get in for only $5.00, and children five and under are free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. After Saturday's show, the track will take a week off before returning for the final race of 2024 when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars will headline a show that will also feature the GAS Chassis Young Gun and Senior Sprints. In addition, it will also be Jerry Dodd's Champion's Night for the PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks, and American Factory Stocks. Advance tickets for all Perris Auto Speedway shows are available 24 hours a day online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. Plenty of tickets will be available at the ticket window every race night for fans who do not wish to purchase in advance. - TWO USAC/CRA RACES ON TAP FOR LOGAN WILLIAMS THIS WEEKEND AT IMPERIAL
(Ontario, CA, October 17, 2024) After a short five-day turnaround, Logan Williams will be back in the Flowdynamics #5W this Friday and Saturday when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series heads to the Imperial Valley Raceway for the 3rd Southern Fall Classic. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM both nights, with racing at 7:00. General admission grandstand tickets are free. Last Saturday, Williams and his crew made the journey to the Mohave Valley Raceway in western Arizona. The 28-year-old opened the night by being the 14th fastest car in qualifying with a time of 15.477. He then started on the outside of the second 10-lap heat race on the balmy desert night. When the checkered flag ended the race on the lightning-quick, banked 1/3 mile oval, Williams sailed past the start-finish line in third. For the 18th main event in the series 20th season, Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, began in the 14th spot. Like always, he moved forward in the main event and advanced two spots to finish 12th. The result ended a three-race streak of top-10 finishes, and it was only the fourth time this season that he has finished worse than 10th. Going into this weekend's races, Williams is sixth in the series championship standings. He is a mere four points out of fifth and only 38 markers out of fourth. Williams will compete on the same fairgrounds the original CRA first raced on in 1956 and his National Sprint Car Hall of Fame father, Rip Williams, debuted on 47 or 48 years ago. At that time, the action was contested on a large half-mile oval. Saturday's race will be conducted in front of the same grandstands and on the same front straightaway as when his father raced there. However, the track being used this weekend will be a quarter-mile oval. Once again, general admission seating is free on both nights. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Imperial Valley Raceway is located on the Imperial Fairgrounds at 200 East 2nd Street in Imperial, California. After this weekend's races, Williams will get a week off before heading to the 57th Annual Avanti Windows and Doors Western World Championship at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway on November 1st and 2nd. A week later, he will be at the year's final USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway on November 9th. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING GOING TO IMPERIAL VALLEY RACEWAY THREE STRONG THIS WEEKEND
(Lakeside, CA, October 15, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing returns to action in a big way this Friday and Saturday at the Imperial Valley Raceway. Father and son drivers Brent and Grant Sexton will be contesting both nights in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series 3rd Annual Heritage Fall Classic. The newest member of SGR, Braydin Collie, will also be on hand for the SoCal Lightning Sprint Cars portion of the two-night affair. Brent, 52, comes into this weekend's races off his second-best USAC/CRA finish of the 2024 campaign. That was an 11th at Perris Auto Speedway on September 21st. That finish was only superseded by a ninth at Perris on July 13th. Coming into this week's races, Brent is 13th in series points and is third in the Rookie of the Year award chase. Grant, who turned 20 three months ago, has been in the wrong place at the wrong time several nights in the USAC/CRA Series this season. Getting dragged into the mistakes of others has proved to be costly during the current campaign. While he has been fast every night, the 2023 Rookie of the Year has one top 10 finish in USAC/CRA this season. That came at Perris when he placed sixth in the 30-lapper on June 6th. The young driver enters the weekend 15th in points. Last March, Brent and Grant both competed at Imperial during the California Mid-Winter Fair. Brent raced the opening weekend in the inaugural races of the SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series. The three-time lightning champion had a successful weekend, placing second and fourth. A week later, he jumped up to the open competition full-size sprint cars and placed 12th and 16th. Grant had a better result than Brent on that weekend when he came home ninth and fifth. Last season, Brent raced lightning sprints four times at Imperial. He never finished worse than fourth, including a win in the POWRi Southwest Series a year ago this weekend. San Diego's AJ Bender also triumphed for Lakeside, California-based SGR at Imperial in 2023. In addition to those wins, El Cajon's Braden Chiaramonte had a victory for the team early in the year. That gave SGR wins in three of the five lightning mains at the fairgrounds oval in 2023. In 2022, Brent recorded two wins at the track, and his oldest son, Dalton, also notched one victory. For Collie, this week's races will mark his first appearance on the Imperial Valley oval. It will be a unique one as well. On Friday night, he and the other SCLS drivers will be racing without wings. Friday will only be his second time racing sans wings. The last time was at Barona three weeks ago. In that race, he started eighth and finished sixth. On Saturday, the drivers will all compete with their cage and nose wings affixed to the cars. The weekend will mark Collie's fifth and sixth races in a lightning sprint car and only his second and third races away from Barona. Thus far in his budding lightning career, Collie has finished sixth or better in three of his four races. The highlight thus far was a fifth place at Barona on August 3rd. Despite only contesting three SCLS races, Collie has climbed up to 14th in points. General admission tickets for this weekend's races are free. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00. Imperial Valley Raceway is located on the Imperial Fairgrounds at 200 East 2nd Street in Imperial, California. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR FINISHES EIGHTH AT KERN AND HEADS TO MOHAVE VALLEY RACEWAY THIS SATURDAY
(Chino, CA, October 10, 2024) After placing eighth in the final regular season main event for the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging last weekend at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway, Eddie Tafoya Jr. heads east to Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway for this Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series race. Saturday's race will be a tune-up for November's 57th Annual Western World Championship at Mohave Valley. Tafoya, 27, came into the final USCS points race of the season third in the series championship standings. The veteran racer was one of 18 cars that turned up for the race at the track in Bakersfield, California. The Chino Hills, California resident qualified fastest of his group of six cars with a lap of 15.558. That was also the fourth-fastest time overall. In his heat race, the 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns champion began in fifth and moved forward to finish third. That placed him on the inside of row two for the final 30-lap regular season main event. Going into turn one on the initial start, the pole sitter had issues and ended up stopped by the wall. It was hard to tell if Tafoya clipped the stopped car or not. In fact, Tafoya himself was not sure if contact was made. On the restart, Tafoya was coming from the pole. However, as soon as the green lights came back on, it became clearly evident that he did make contact with the stopped car on the initial go. He slid back into the pack and eventually finished eighth. Despite the finish, he maintained third place in the overall standings in the USCS first season. "I think he (the polesitter) had too much throttle on the start and slid it right through the slick in the middle," Tafoya said of the main event start. "Backed himself into the wall and kind of bounced back. I didn't know if I for sure clipped him but I thought I might have. Based on the way the rest of the race went, it kind of showed that (he clipped the stopped car). My rear end was out of square and the bird cages were all off. I was kind of a sitting duck wherever I went that race." Saturday's USAC/CRA race will be Tafoya's fifth on the longtime Mohave Valley track that is located five minutes from the Colorado River and 20 minutes from downtown Laughlin, Nevada. His initial outing at the 1/3 mile banked oval ended with his best finish there thus far when he placed third on April 23, 2023. Six months later, he visited again and steered his beautiful #51T to an eighth place result. In 2023, Tafoya paid two visits to Mohave Valley. While his end results did not show it, he was a contender each time. At the start of April, in front of one of the largest crowds in track history, the well-spoken racer qualified third fastest of the 30 cars on hand. He then came from sixth to finish third in his heat. The 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the year was running in the top five in the main event when he slid to a stop in turn one. Being the cause of the red flag, he had to restart at the back of the 22 car field. From that point on, he put on a show, passing more cars than any other driver to finish 12th. Six months later, Tafoya was a contender again working his way into second place. However, his engine began laying down, and he wisely pulled off the track to prevent damage. Sadly, that left him with a 12th-place finish. "I don't know if it is the track shape, or maybe the banking, I am just really confident getting the car in there," Tafoya said on Thursday afternoon while on his way to the race shop to work on the car. "Ever since I was there the first time, I have had a good base setup. I just jell well (there). So, it is really exciting to go back there. I think that is the only track I have been good at every single time. I need to figure out what I am doing there and carry it on to the other places." "Driving-wise, yeah, it is one of my favorite racetracks," Tafoya continued. "You can be really aggressive for most of the night until it slicks off. Even when it was slick last year, I think I was the only one running the top until I got to the front and showed those guys that. It is fun, and it is a racy little place. Hopefully, some moisture stays in the dirt for us." To see Tafoya in action on Saturday, the Mohave Valley Raceway is located at 2750 E. Laguna Rd. in Mohave Valley, Arizona (86440). Gates at the popular track will open at 5:00 p.m. The night's first green flag will wave at 7:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Kids 6-12 get in for $15.00, and children five and under are free. It is cash only for tickets (no ATMs on site). Concessions, souvenirs, and the beer garden take cash or cards. For more information, the track website is https://www.mohavevalleyraceway.com/ and the office phone is (928) 346-6000. For fans who cannot attend the race in person, it will be shown live on pay-per-view at the following link: https://drc.tv/. After this weekend's race, Tafoya will wrap up the USAC/CRA season at the 57th Annual Avanti Windows and Doors Western World Championship at Mohave Valley on November 1st and 2nd. One week later on November 9th, he will be in action for the season finale at Perris Auto Speedway. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will sign autographs, pose for photos, and sell his beautiful 2024 team shirts. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, Inland Rigging, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting its racing program. (Ontario, CA, October 9, 2024) Talented Flowdynamics racer Logan Williams will hit the home stretch of his 2024 season when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series visits Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway this Saturday night. After this week's show, the 28-year-old racer will only have five races remaining before bringing down the curtain on his 2024 racing campaign. 451244812_7834458623257138_2040436876729346144_n.jpg #5W Logan Williams in action at Perris Auto Speedway. Doug Allen photo. This year has been a breakout season for the Yorba Linda, California driver. After the first race of the season, he was seventh in the series championship standings. That was the only time the pleasant driver has been outside of the top six all season long. He has been in the top five in the standings for the last four months dating back to June 8th. His highest ranking of the year came in week 11 when he was third. Williams comes into this Saturday's race at "Arizona's Baddest Bullring" fifth in the title chase. In his last appearance at the track that is located 20 minutes from downtown Laughlin, Nevada, he turned in the seventh fastest qualifying time of the 28 cars on hand. He closed that night by finishing ninth in the 30-lap main. Prior to this season, Williams had appeared three times on the 1/3 of a mile banked oval located approximately five minutes from the Colorado River. His first appearance came on April 23rd, 2022. In that one, he got caught up in somebody else's mess early in the main and was saddled with a 22nd-place finish. Six months later, he recorded his best Mojave finish when he came home eighth. In 2023, he only journeyed to the track one time and placed 11th. Williams' last time on track came two weeks ago when the USAC/CRA series visited Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway in Bakersfield, California. That night, he started ninth and finished 10th in the 30-lap main, giving him 13 top 10 finishes in 16 starts this season. To see the popular Williams in action on Saturday, the Mohave Valley Raceway is located at 2750 E. Laguna Rd. in Mohave Valley, Arizona (86440). Gates at the popular track will open at 5:00 p.m. The night's first green flag will wave at 7:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Kids 6-12 get in for $15.00, and children five and under are free. For more information, the track website is https://www.mohavevalleyraceway.com/ and the office phone is (928) 346-6000. Williams will get one week off after Saturday's race before heading to the Imperial Valley Raceway on October 18th and 19th. He will then head back to Mohave Valley for the 57th Annual Western World Championships on November 1st and 2nd before closing the season at Perris Auto Speedway on November 9th. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR ENTERS FINAL USCS REGULAR SEASON RACE THIRD IN POINTS
(Chino, CA, October 3, 2024) When the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging wraps up its inaugural regular season this Saturday night, October 5th, at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will come into the fray third in the championship standings. The 27-year-old has made two appearances at the track recording a fourth on June 8th and a ninth on August 31st. Both of those races came while competing with the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. Tafoya's last appearance in the USCS Series came on September 14th when he placed seventh in the main event at the Ventura Raceway. That was the second-best result for the Chino Hills, California driver in the USCS this year. It was only superseded by his second-place run with the first-year racing organization at the grand reopening of the Santa Maria Speedway on June 15th. Tafoya's last track appearance came two weeks ago when he placed sixth in the USAC/CRA main event at Perris Auto Speedway. That ran his streak of top-10 finishes in the series to nine straight races. The streak has now stretched over six months. After this week's regular season-ender for the USCS, he will have one race left in the series this season. That will be the sprint car portion of the annual Turkey Night Grand Prix at the Ventura Raceway on Thanksgiving weekend. Sandwiched in between now and then, Tafoya can run six races in the USAC/CRA Series. The 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year has already submitted his entry for the prestigious 57th Annual Avanti Windows and Doors Western World Championship at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway on November 1st and 2nd. For fans wanting to travel to this week's USCS race at Kern, adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/. Hot laps will begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. with racing at approximately 7:00. - DALE EARNHARDT JR REPLICA READY FOR NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION AT PERRIS
(Perris, CA, October 1, 2024) Over the years in Night of Destruction at Perris Auto Speedway, there have been several popular paint schemes on the competing vehicles. However, when LKQ Pick Your Part presents the latest Night of Destruction this Saturday, October 5th, Alex Kiss may field the most popular one of all. It is a replica of a Dale Earnhardt Jr car. Kiss, who resides in Riverside, California, started the season by driving a popular "Family Truckster" replica from the movie National Lampoon's Vacation. Unfortunately, that car was destroyed at the last Night of Destruction. Kiss, who grew up two miles from the Charlotte Motor Speedway, was going to build another version of the same car. However, his wife, Madelyn, suggested he should go in a different direction. "We bought a house close to Perris Auto Speedway and got into some of the Facebook pages that said what was going on in the neighborhood," Kiss answered when asked how he got into Demo Cross. "Friends of ours posted about the Night of Destruction. I love racing and watching stuff crash. We ended up being fans by going and watching. " The wife of Kiss' buddy Brett Wayland asked if Kiss could build a car for an anniversary gift. Kiss obliged, and Wayland did pretty good the first time out. Wayland asked Kiss to come out and race with him, and things grew from there. "I work in the studios, and there was a car that was used in a commercial, and they were going to crush it," Kiss laughed about his first Demo Cross car. "I said, 'Hey, don't' crush it, let me run it in one of the destruction races.' It was a Firebird. A Firebird is not the ideal car for Demo Cross, but I did not know that at the time. I was doing all right, but I got a little overzealous and spun myself out. I got T boned by another car and broke my axle." "When I started doing it seriously on the Family Truckster, I wanted to go all out on the theme and give the fans something they can relate, too," Kiss remembered. "Everybody knows the Family Truckster. My dad helped me out. He built the aunt that passed away and strapped her to the top of the car. The neighbors around here pitched in on the decorations on the top like the luggage and what not." When the Family Truckster got destroyed at the last race, Kiss wanted to rebuild. That is when his wife suggested he build something else. "I bought a black Yukon," Kiss stated. "I am a big Dale Earnhardt fan and have been since I was a little kid growing up in North Carolina. I duplicated Dale Jr's black car since he is still with us. I looked up what a black #8 car of his looked like. I kind of copied it and went around the neighborhood looking for stickers. You know, contingency stickers to make it look like a racecar." Kiss and his parents attended a lot of races at Charlotte. When he was eight or nine years old, he got to know a lot of guys at Hendrick Motorsports. They would let him come in and look at stuff in the engine shop and the chassis shop. However, he never got to race anything motorized as a kid. "Racing has been part of my life for a long time," the friendly driver stated. "But I never had the means to really do it until I grew up. So, I did not get to do karting or this and that. So, I have tried to get after it a little bit later. I did some short course stuff, but the series (he was in) disappeared. That is when I got into the destruction stuff. It is way more fun getting to smash into people and have people smash into you and not get in trouble for it. It is budget-raceable." With two races remaining in the 2024 season, Kiss has a slender six-point lead over defending Demo Cross champion Trebor Stevens of San Jacinto. He may leave Saturday with more points added on, but he will probably miss the last race on October 26th and the possible championship. "We are going to come out swinging this weekend, but I am going to miss the last race most likely," Kiss stated. "One of my best friends is getting married in Utah. So, I will probably lose the points lead." Another aspect of Kiss racing at The PAS is his group of fans. Approximately 50 or 60 strong, they sit together and cheer him and Wayland on whether they win or not. Every time before they race, they have a barbecue at Wayland's house. Then they come to the track to cheer their heroes on. Kiss wanted to be sure to thank his dad, his wife Madelyn, his longtime friend Tim Chapman and "The Amazing" Riverside Mobile Tire Shop. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM on Saturday, and the crashing will begin at 7:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Kids six to 12 get in for only $5.00, and children five and under are free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets for all Perris Auto Speedway shows are available 24 hours a day online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. - LOGAN WILLIAMS TIED FOR FOURTH HEADING INTO SATURDAY'S KERN USAC/CRA RACE
(Ontario, CA, September 26, 2024) Flowdynamics racer Logan Williams will be back in action this Saturday when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars visit the Kevin Harvick Kern Raceway for the "Bakersfield Bash." The Yorba Linda, California-based driver enters the race tied for fourth in the series point standings with seven races to go in the season. Saturday will mark the season's third stop for the talented 28-year-old at Kern. The first two trips to the track located in Bakersfield have provided the friendly driver with a mixed bag of results. On June 8th, he placed second on the 1/3 mile oval. That was his best finish of the season. Four weeks ago, in his last appearance at the track located in the shadow of the paved half-mile oval, mechanical ills knocked him out of the race, and he came home 18th. That was only the third time he finished out of the top 10 in 2024. Last Saturday night, on the same track he won the 2023 Young Guns Championship, Perris Auto Speedway, Williams, kicked off the night by qualifying 10th fastest in the good-looking #5W. A famous West Coast Williams sprint car racing family member, he began and finished his 10-lap heat race in fourth. In a wild 30-lap main that saw numerous yellow and red flags due to crashes, Williams began the race in 10th. He was one of the few racers in the event who managed to stay out of trouble. Staying out of the chaos, he appeared to have a chance to finish in the top five for the seventh time this season. However, he rolled to a stop in turn two late in the race during a yellow flag period. The car had run out of fuel. After restarting in the rear, Williams drove back to the 10th spot before the checkered flag waved. "We ran out of fuel," Williams said after the race. "Something was wrong with the fuel system. We went through 34 gallons when usually we go through 25." Williams emerged from the race tied for fourth in the USAC/CRA championship standings. He is 46 points behind the third-place driver, who happens to be his brother Austin. After this week's Kern race, Williams and the rest of the USAC/CRA stars and cars have the October 5th weekend off. However, his schedule gets busy after that. On October 12th, he will be competing at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway. The following week on the 18th & 19th, he will be racing at the Imperial Valley Raceway near the southeast corner of California. Williams will return to Mohave Valley on November 1st and 2nd for the 57th Western World Championship presented by Avanti Windows and Doors. One week later, on November 9th, he will finish the 2024 campaign at Perris Auto Speedway. Spectator gates for this Saturday's race will open at 5:00 p.m., with racing at 7:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Kids 6-12 get in for $10.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 15300 Raceway Boulevard in Bakersfield. Advance tickets are available through the track website at www.kernraceway.com. The office phone number is 616-835-1264. Whenever you get the chance to meet Williams in person, be sure to see him in the pits. He will gladly sign autographs, and have his fine-looking team shirts available. If you or your company would like to be a part of one of the West Coast's most prominent sprint car teams in the 2024 season, please contact John McCarthy at 909 930-5522 or john@flodyinc.com. - ALERT DRIVING SAW TAFOYA EXTEND USAC/CRA TOP 10 FINISH STREAK TO NINE AT PERRIS
(Chino, CA, September 25, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. survived most of the chaos in last Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race and came home sixth at Perris Auto Speedway. The finish was his ninth straight top-10 result in the series. The last time Tafoya, 27, did not place in the top 10 was in a USAC/CRA race over six months ago. That came when he finished 12th in a rain-shortened event at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway on March 23rd. His best outing in the nine-race streak came on June 8th when he placed fourth at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. Last week on the famous Perris half-mile oval, Tafoya was strong through the preliminary part of the night. The Chino Hills, California-based racer qualified in the upper half of the field with the ninth-fastest time of 17.012. In his eight-lap heat race, he started and finished fourth. If he looked strong in the prelims, he was more powerful in the 30-lap main. Tafoya performed well on a night where self-preservation meant as much as anything else in the feature. In a race that looked a lot like the track's popular Night of Destruction with several cars destroyed, he mostly steered through the chaos. After starting ninth, his only encounter came on a restart when several cars in front of him got into a tangle "Yeah, I saw a couple people get sideways in front of me and everyone started checking up, and I checked up," Tafoya said. "I got hit from behind. I did like a full 360 pirouette in the air. I thought I was going over. Luckily it landed back on all four, and everything was still bolted together. I got lucky there." Tafoya had to take the eye-catching #51T to the back for the restart. From there, he moved forward. Deftly avoiding some more questionable maneuvers, he drove all the way back through the pack to finish sixth. It was his best Perris finish thus far in 2024. One of the keys to finishing in the top 10 for Tafoya is staying out of trouble. He certainly knows that you cannot do well if you do not finish the race. He has done well with that throughout his career. "I am pretty aware of what is going on around me and looking ahead," the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year said when asked about his string of top 10s. "I don't know if it comes from dirt bikes or all the other racing I have done. Seems like a lot of these guys are just racing the guys right in front of them when there is a whole other race going on. It definitely helps me out being able to avoid stuff." Tafoya is pleased with his runs in the top, but like most racers, he wants more. "It is nice being in the top 10," Tafoya said. "I would just like to qualify a little better and be up in the mix. It seems like I can qualify really close to the top everywhere but Perris. I definitely need to figure something out there. I felt good Saturday (in qualifying). I got a little loose on my fast lap, the second lap. There was a hole down the straightaway that I got into, and it got me a little light. That is probably the best I felt in a long time. It just sucks that I could not put it together." In addition to his nine top 10s in USAC/CRA competition, Tafoya has a pair of top 10s in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging. The first was his best overall finish of the year when he placed second at Santa Maria on June 15th. The other came two weeks ago when he drove to a seventh at the Ventura Raceway. Next up for Tafoya will be a USCS race at Kern on October 5th. - JEFF AND SETH DYER BACK IN ACTION THIS SATURDAY AT VENTURA
(Yucca Valley, CA, September 25, 2024) Dyer Motorsports will be back on the road this Saturday night, September 28, when the father and son team of Jeff and Seth Dyer make the 165-mile trek from Yucca Valley, California, to the Ventura Raceway. The California Lightning Series race will be the family team's fourth night of action in three weeks. Two weeks ago at Ventura, both the #4 and #4JR were in action. In only his second night back after two months off due to a broken arm and concussion he suffered in a violent crash in a USAC/CRA race at Perris, Jeff, a California Highway Patrol Officer by day, placed third in the main. Seventeen-year-old Seth finished three spots behind his father in sixth. Earlier that night, Jeff recorded the second-fastest qualifying time with a lap of 12.363. Seth, who gets faster with each passing race, was fourth at 12.695. Matched together in the second heat, Jeff captured his lead-tying fourth heat race win of the season. Seth took third in the same race. Those finishes came 24 hours after Jeff placed eighth and Seth finished 11th in the CLS main at the Bakersfield Speedway. Last Saturday night, Seth was representing Dyer Motorsports/Cal Smith Racing in the Perris Auto Speedway Young Gun Series. At the last Young Guns race, Seth swept the show, winning both his heat and the main event going away. Things started out the same last weekend when he won his heat race with a full straightaway advantage. His main event fortunes looked bright. However, his shifter cable broke when he was bumping off for the main event, denying his chance to make it two in a row. In addition to Seth racing with the Young Guns last Saturday, longtime veteran Cal Smith drove the same #39 car in the USAC/CRA portion of the show. Unfortunately, Smith left the action early and finished 18th. Fortunately, his early exit meant he had no chance of being involved in the multitude of accidents that saw several cars destroyed. After Saturday, Jeff and Seth will head north for the final round of the Civil War Series that matches the CLS with Northern California's BCRA in the 10th Albright Memorial at Doug Lockwood's Merced Speedway on October 5th. To see Jeff and Seth take on the CLS' finest this Saturday on the "Best Little Dirt Track In America," adult tickets are $18.00. For seniors 65 and over, it is $15.00. Military and students with ids also get in for $15.00. Kids 12 and under are free when an adult accompanies them. Spectator gates will open at 3:00 p.m., and the first race will get the green flag at 5:30. The track is located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001). The website is http://venturaraceway.com/, and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE. If you have a Facebook account, Seth did an interview before last Saturday's race. You can hear it here https://www.facebook.com/reel/1019188306156799. In 2024, the following marketing partners will help keep the Dyers on track. - BRENT SEXTON PLACES 11TH IN USAC/CRA MAIN AT PERRIS ON HIS MOM'S BIRTHDAY
(Lakeside, CA, September 24, 2024) A festive mood greeted visitors to the Sexton Gatlin Racing pit area when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars visited Perris Auto Speedway last Saturday night. The crew and drivers were celebrating the birthday of Brent Sexton's mom and co-team owner, Nita Gatlin. On the night, Brent steered his eye-catching #44 to an 11th-place finish in the 30-lap main event. On the pleasant last day of summer, when the daytime temperature failed to reach 100 degrees at the track for the first time at a PAS sprint car race since April, Brent was accompanied by his talented 20-year-old son, Grant. Besides them, 20 of the other fastest traditional sprint cars on the West Coast were on hand for an evening of 410 sprint car series racing. Grant got the ball rolling for SGR when he timed in 14th fastest of the cars on hand with a lap of 17.343. Brent, 52, was not far behind when he stopped the track clocks at 17.590. That was just under a quarter second slower than his son. That is very good considering he was using a 360 engine and he was pitted against a powerful field of 410s. It was the 18th best time of the night. For Grant, the 2021 POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car champion, his lap placed him on the outside of row one in the second 10-lap heat race. Ultimately, the talkative racer ended up in the same second-place position as he started. Brent also started on the front of his heat, and after scrapping up front early on, he rolled past the checkers in sixth. When the 22-car field pulled onto the track for the 30-lap finale, Grant was on the outside of the seventh row, and Brent was outside row nine. Unfortunately, Grant's time in the race did not last long. A wild lap-two crash involving several cars in front of him gathered him in. His car and four others suffered major damage and were knocked out of the race. Sadly, that meant he ended up 21st. Brent managed to steer his way through the crash and several others in the remainder of the race. With the numerous tangles throughout the night, that was a feat in itself. By the end of the 30th lap, he improved his position by six spots to finish 11th. That was his second-best result in the USAC/CRA Series this season. It was also his fourth best of the year overall in a full-sized sprint car, as he has ninth-place finishes in both USAC and the USCS. He also has a 10th in USCS competition. Brent left Perris 13th in points, with Grant 14th. In addition, Brent is third in the Rookie of the Year chase and is just 35 points out of second. This Saturday night, September 28th, rookie Braydin Collie will be making his fourth start in the SGR #44 in the SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series. The teen has finished in the top 10 in his first three starts placing fifth and ninth at Barona and sixth at Santa Maria. The last time the USCS ran wingless was at Barona on May 25th, and the car Collie was driving won the main event with Brent at the wheel. To see Collie in action at Barona, gates will open at noon, with racing at 6:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. For kids 7 to 17, admission is $10.00. Seniors, Military, and EMTs also get in for $10.00. Children 6 and under are free. Family packs of two adults and two kids are $50.00. Parking is free. The Barona Speedway is located at 1754 Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside, California. The track website is https://baronaspeedway.com/, and the phone number is (619) 994-6560. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. - SPRINT CARS, STOCK CARS AND A SPORTS EQUIPMENT DRIVE AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY THIS SATURDAY
(Perris, CA, September 17, 2024) In addition to the usual dirt track excitement generated by the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, GAS Chassis Young Gun Sprint, PAS Senior Sprints, and the PASSCAR Super Stocks and American Factory Stocks this coming Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway, something else will be going on. The famous 29-year-old half-mile clay oval will host a sports equipment drive to supply children with sports gear. Miss Arizona United States Shelby Waldron is hosting the drive. She approached track official Chris Holt regarding the sports equipment program. "Chris Holt contacted me and told me what Shelby wanted to do," Perris promoter Don Kazarian said. "We think it is a wonderful idea. With the price of sports equipment these days, many families cannot afford to equip their children to participate. Hopefully, this will get a lot of kids who otherwise could not participate on the field or the courts. We are more than happy to help out." Kazarian stated that there will be areas in the grandstands for fans to leave the equipment they bring to the track. In addition, there will be a collection area in the pits for drivers and crew members to donate. "I am hosting a sports equipment drive at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday, September 21st," Waldron said in a promo video released for the event. "My goal is to help local kids get involved in sports by helping them gain access to sports equipment. What I am asking is for you to go through your garages. Any usable sports equipment you have lying around - helmets, cleats, gloves - bring it down to the track on Saturday, September 21st. Pit gates will open at 3:00 p.m., main gates open at 5:00 p.m. Can't wait to see you all there for a great night of racing." Adult tickets for the next battle in the season-long USAC/CRA war are $30.00. For seniors 65 and over, it is $25.00. Kids ages 6 to 12 get in for only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charge $10 for parking. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first race of the night will get the green flag at 7:00. Advance tickets for all Perris Auto Speedway shows are available 24 hours a day online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. - THREE RACES IN TWO CLASSES FOR SEXTON GATLIN RACING THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, September 11, 2024) After a weekend away from the track, Sexton Gatlin Racing returns to action with a busy 24 hours this Friday and Saturday, contesting three races in two nights at two tracks. On Friday, Grant Sexton will return to the site of one of his biggest wins, the Bakersfield Speedway, to race in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series vs Bay Cities Racing Association Civil War event. Twenty-four hours later, he will be joined by his father, Brent, for the Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging at the Ventura Raceway. Friday's race will be the second time the CLS has teamed with the World of Outlaws at the "Okie Bowl." The race will bring back memories of the then-17-year-old's magnificent triumph in March of 2022. Competing in front of a near-capacity live crowd and thousands more World of Outlaw fans watching from around the world on Dirt Vision, Grant fearlessly banged the Bakersfield boards over the final few laps and took the lead less than a foot before the checkered flag. Sexton's thrilling win that night sent the crowd into a frenzy and earned him a standing ovation. His enthusiastic victory speech afterward charged the crowd up one more time before the CLS turned the track over to the World of Outlaws. For Grant, whose mantel at home already sports the 2021 POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Championship hardware, 2019 POWRi Nationals Night #1 winner's trophy, and the 2023 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year award, Friday will only be his second lightning sprint car race of 2024. His first came minutes away from the family's Lakeside, California compound at the Barona Speedway on May 11th. That night, the young driver arrived late at the track and had to start last in each race. In the main event, he started 13th and was up to fourth before the lap five mark. By the end of the 20-lapper, he had advanced another spot to finish third and win the race Hard Charger award. In addition to both of the Sexton's racing in the USCS event at Santa Maria on Saturday, USAC/CRA star AJ Bender of San Diego will step into the team's lightning sprint for the CLS race at Ventura. Bender has been a lethal hired gun for SGR in the past. Last year, in November's Hangtown 100 at Placerville, he won the first two nights and finished second to Grant at the finale. That bookended a season that saw him win the March SWLS opener at Imperial Valley. In 2021, Bender won a round of the Cal Cup in Lemoore and placed second on all three nights at the Hangtown 100 in Placerville in an SGR car. Advance tickets for the World of Outlaws/CLS show at Bakersfield are available now at the following link: https://worldofoutlaws.com/sprintcars/The track is located at 5001 North Chester Ext. Ave., Bakersfield (93308). The track website is bakersfieldspeedway.com, and the office phone number is (661) 393-3373. Adult tickets for Ventura are $22.00. For seniors 65 and over, it is $18.00. Military and students with id also get in for $18.00. Kids 12 and under are free when they are accompanied by an adult. The track is located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001). The website is http://venturaraceway.com/ and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE. Fans from out of town can catch both of the races streaming live this weekend. Friday's race will be on Dirt Vision and Saturday's show will be on Flo Racing. Grant and Brent were last on track over Labor Day weekend at the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway on Saturday and the USCS race at Santa Maria the next night. At Kern, things started off bright enough for Grant when he qualified ninth fastest in the 27-car field. In his heat, he finished fourth, which was one position better than Brent, who earlier in the night qualified 18th. Grant started the main in ninth, with Brent coming from 18th. Unfortunately, Grant's night ended early when he broke a drag link. That stuck him with a 20th-place finish. Brent, who is 52, started 18th in the main event and moved forward to finish 13th. The following night at Santa Maria, Grant was third fastest in his qualifying group and 10th overall with a lap of 14.105. His dad's qualifying time was 14.333. That was the fourth fastest in his group and 15th best of the night. Brent had success in his 10-lap heat race. He started on the pole and steered his white and orange #44 to his first USCS heat victory. Grant was in heat three and moved up one position to place second. When the 30-lap main event pushed through the pit gate, Brent was starting fifth. Grant was a couple of rows behind on the inside of row five in ninth. Unfortunately for Grant, his main event ended early for the second night in a row with another issue. Things went better for Brent, who had his best run in a full-size car this year. However, it was not without a problem. Running in the top five early in the race, he had to go to the back of the pack after going around on the back chute. As the yellow flag came out for his mishap, Brent had to restart at the back. From there, he stayed focused and drove all the way up to ninth. - AVANTI WINDOWS AND DOORS USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS RETURN TO PERRIS SEPTEMBER 21ST
(Perris, CA, September 9, 2024) The 29th season of racing at Perris Auto Speedway will hit the home stretch when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series returns to the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval on September 21st. For fans of LKQ Pick Your Part Night of Destruction, the event that was postponed last Saturday due to the scorching heat has been rescheduled for Saturday night, October 5th. The USAC/CRA Series has had one of the best championship chases in its 20-season history. Just when it appeared that Yucaipa, California's Tommy "Thunder" Malcolm began to ease away from the competition, Laveen, Arizona's RJ Johnson closed the gap dramatically when he won his second main event of the season last Saturday night at the Santa Maria Speedway. That victory, which was Johnson's second of the 2024 campaign, allowed him to close to within seven points of Malcolm heading into the race on the 21st at The PAS. All told, nine different drivers have posted wins in the first 14 races of the year. Only three drivers, Malcolm, Johnson, and Yorba Linda, California's Matt Mitchell, have more than one victory. Malcolm leads the way with four, and Johnson and Mitchell have two apiece. Malcolm and Mitchell have two wins each in the season's first seven races at Perris. David Gasper of Goleta, California, San Diego's AJ Bender, and "The Cadillac" Cody Williams each have one win. "The racing has been great all season long in USAC/CRA," Perris promoter Don Kazarian enthused. "Lots of different winners on the circuit and great battles in the point standings. Not only the fight for the lead but all the way back to seventh or eighth. The positions keep changing." The stars and cars of USAC/CRA will be joined by the GAS Chassis Young Gun Sprints, PAS Senior Sprints, and the PASSCAR Super Stocks, and American Factory Stocks on the 21st. The Night of Destruction slated for last Saturday night at The PAS was postponed until October 5th due to the scorching temperatures. On top of the intense heat, a surprise thunderstorm, festooned with thunder, lightning, and hail, pounded the track late in the afternoon. "I never thought I would have to cancel a race because of the heat," Kazarian said. "As it turned out, even if we had not canceled because of the heat, we would have had to throw in the towel when the unexpected thunderstorm hit the track on Saturday. Adult tickets for the next battle in the season-long USAC/CRA war on September 21st are $30.00. For seniors 65 and over, it is $25.00. Kids ages 6 to 12 get in for only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charge $10 for parking. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR SCORES ANOTHER TOP 10 FINISH AT KERN - HEADED TO VENTURA THIS WEEK
(Chino, CA, September 7, 2024) After racing on two different racetracks in 24 hours two weeks ago, Eddie Tafoya Jr. returns to action this Saturday night when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging returns to the Ventura Raceway. It will be the final tune-up at the track before the series returns to wrap up its initial season at the Turkey Night Grand Prix in November. Tafoya's last appearances came on August 31st and September 1st. Up first was the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars in the Johnny Vermeer/Narcie Ferreira Classic at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway in Bakersfield, where he finished ninth in the main event. Twenty-four hours later, the popular driver led several laps before getting knocked out of the race and finishing 17th in the USCS event at the Santa Maria Speedway. At Kern, Tafoya qualified 14th fastest of the 27 USAC/CRA Cars who turned up to race at the track in the city known as "Nashville West." A second-place finish in the beautiful #51T in his 10-lap heat race had the 27-year-old primed and ready for a good run in the main event. Despite starting 14th in the 30 lapper, Tafoya showed that he had speed on the night. The Chino Hills, California Racer managed to move forward and stay out of the turn-one hole that plagued many competitors. When the checkered flag ended the race, he had moved up five spots to finish ninth. That gave the friendly driver eight straight top 10s in USAC/CRA this season. It was also his eighth top 10 in 11 starts in the tough series. The following night, Tafoya shined in qualifying at Santa Maria. In the USCS, drivers draw a number and time trial against the racers they will compete with in their heat race. Tafoya was the fastest qualifier in his group, and his time of 13.522 was the fourth fastest time in the 26-car field. After a fifth-place finish in his 10-lap heat, Tafoya lined up outside the front row for the main event. On a track that was definitely a "Cowboy Up Surface," Tafoya flew into the lead at the drop of the green flag. The 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year maintained the top spot for the first five laps before slipping back to second on the rough terrain. "It was very tough," Tafoya said of leading the race with cars right behind. "Especially getting into lapped traffic in two and a half laps or whatever it was. I kind of overshot the setup a little bit. I got too aggressive when I probably should have rolled it back a bit when I knew it was going to be rough. I knew I was starting up front, and I knew I did not want to be too loose and I ended up being too tight." "It is really tough on the restarts when you are tight," the 2018 Perris Young Gun champion continued. "That is pretty much the only time I was losing anything. Besides that, we were going forward." Tafoya stayed in the top five for over three-quarters of the race. However, after a lap 24 restart, he was hit by another car on his left side in turn four. The clatter sheared off the steering arm from the steering box. It knocked him out of the race and lowered him from a top-five finish to 17th. "For the first time in a long time, I felt really balanced," Tafoya said about the speed over the weekend. "I felt like I could go anywhere I really wanted to. That was good to feel as it has been a while since I had that. It was work through the week; I just went through everything. I made sure everything was perfect, square, and centered. I made sure all of my measurements were right. Sometimes you have a spell of races where you're just not feeling it, so you just have to go back through all that stuff." Tafoya will be making his third appearance of the season at Ventura this Saturday, September 14. The now-veteran driver hopes to improve on his frustrating results at the famous track earlier this year. On June 1st, at the start of the main, Tafoya was leading the pack going into turn one when something broke in the front end of his car and sent him careening into the wall. That ended his night. Seven weeks later, at the track known as "The Commotion By The Ocean," he was drilled from behind on a restart. The blow resulted in a flat tire that knocked him out of the race. The veteran driver is more than capable of big results on the track located adjacent to the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean on the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Two years ago when USAC/CRA visited Ventura, Tafoya outqualified the field and placed fifth in the 30-lap main event. Spectator gates to see Tafoya at Ventura will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 5:30. Adult tickets are $22.00. Seniors 60 and over, military with ID, and students with an ID get in for $18.00. Children 12 and under are free when they are accompanied by an adult. The track is located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001). The website is http://venturaraceway.com/, and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE. - LOGAN WILLIAMS LOOKS FOR A TURN OF FORTUNE AT SATURDAY'S SANTA MARIA USAC/CRA RACE
(Ontario, CA, September 5, 2024) After an unsatisfactory result in last Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series main event at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway, veteran driver Logan Williams is looking for a change in fortune this Saturday night when the series heads to the Santa Maria Speedway. Williams, 28, goes into this weekend's competition ranked fifth in the USAC/CRA championship point standings. The 2014 Series Rookie of the Year has had a breakout season in 2024. However, last Saturday's uncharacteristic result was one of the few blemishes in his season's racing ledger. It was only the third time in 13 starts that he has failed to finish in the top 10. All three of those outings came when he was not around for the finish of the 30-lappers. Saturday's race will be the third of the season at Santa Maria for Yorba Linda, California-based Williams, and it will be a welcome getaway from the blast furnace temperatures that have been torching Southern California. Williams, the son of National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Rip Williams and brother of fellow USAC/CRA stars Cody and Austin Williams, had an outstanding outing at Santa Maria four weeks ago on August 10th. After qualifying six fastest and placing 5th in his heat on the 60-year-old one-third mile bank clay oval, Williams began the main event outside the front row. In the main, Williams, driving the beautiful Flowdynamics #5W, hounded the leader over the first half of the race and nearly stole the point position several times. However, a fast leader, lapped cars, and a "cowboy up" track thwarted those attempts. The affable driver held the runner-up spot until he was passed at the checkered flag and finished third. His only better finish of the year came at Kern on June 8th when he placed second. In his initial appearance of 2024 at Santa Maria, Williams won his heat race and came from 11th to finish eighth in the main event on July 6th. Last Saturday at Kern, Williams, the 2013 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns Champion, qualified 17th in the 27-car field and placed fourth in his 10-lap heat race. He started the 30-lap main in 17th and quickly reached the top 10. The likable driver stayed in the top 10 until lap 24, when he suddenly rolled to a stop in turn four. Unfortunately, a hook was needed to get the car off the track, and he finished with a very frustrating 18th-place result. "We don't know," the baffled Williams responded when asked what put him out of the race. "The car has been handling really bad the last two races." For fans wanting to see Williams at USAC/CRA's last 2024 appearance at Santa Maria on Saturday, adult tickets are $30.00. Seniors and military get in for $28.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. Gates will open at 4:00 p.m., qualifying will begin at 5:00 and the first race will take the green flag at 6:00. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. After Saturday's race, Williams will be joined by his teammate Matt McCarthy when USAC/CRA returns to its home track, Perris Auto Speedway, on September 21st. Whenever you get the chance to meet the Flowdynamics drivers in person, be sure to visit them in the pits. They will be glad to sign your autographs, and each of them will have their fine-looking team shirts available. If you or your company would like to be a part of one of the West Coast's most prominent sprint car teams in the 2024 season, please contact John McCarthy at 909 930-5522 or john@flodyinc.com. McCarthy and Williams would like to thank the following sponsors for making the 2023 season possible. - BRODY ROA SURPRISED MANY IN RETURN TO HIS OWN CAR AT SANTA MARIA
(Cypress, CA, September 4, 2024) In what was a surprise to everyone from the fans in the grandstands to the other drivers in the pit area, Brody Roa showed up in his own #91R when Inland Rigging presented the Ultimate Sprint Car Series "Race For Chase" last Sunday night at the Santa Maria Speedway. It was the first time the veteran driver was on the track in his familiar green race car since the final event of the 2022 season. Last year, Roa won the USAC/CRA championship in the Tom and Kristy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17R. The car was a combined effort using Roa's chassis, the same one he drove at Santa Maria and engines supplied by Dunkel. At Sunday's race, the car was powered by an engine that the Garden Grove, California racing star purchased out of Pennsylvania. When the bright green #91R rolled onto the track on Sunday at Santa Maria, it was met with excitement from the fans. While it was a surprise to them, it was not a spur-of-the-moment deal. In fact, the friendly driver had been working on it all year. "I kind of picked away at it all year," Roa said about putting his own deal back on the track. "I slowly pieced it back together. Getting it painted and stuff. We didn't have an engine the whole time. The engine finally showed up in the middle of July." While the engine arrived over a month and a half ago, the veteran driver continued to take his time getting everything together. The fact of the matter is he did not even plan on racing last weekend. From the start of the year, August 31st was marked as an off day on his schedule. That was also the day that there was a conflict between the USAC/CRA and USCS schedules. USAC/CRA was slated to be at Kern and USCS was scheduled at Santa Maria. That conflict is what opened the door for Roa to get the #91R on the track. "I had August 31st marked off my schedule all year as not racing that night," Roa explained. "Malyssa (USCS president Malyssa Perkins) rescheduled Santa Maria for September 1st. Jayson (Jayson May owner of the #8M Roa has been driving) obviously wanted somebody in the car for Kern. That is his home track and all of his sponsors are right there. So, Jake Andreotti ran the #8M car the whole weekend and we decided to put my car together to race at Santa Maria." The biggest obstacle in getting his program up and running was not a minor detail. Roa did not have an engine! He went on the hunt and found it in the sprint car hotbed of Pennsylvania. "It is an old Dash 12 some guy in Pennsylvania had," Roa said of his new engine. "He did all of the machine work on it and assembled it. He had Kreitz dyno it, and it looks good on the dyno sheet. It runs pretty good. I was really pleased with how it ran Sunday. It was pretty strong for a Dash 12. They are older engines and not as big a hitter as what we had the past 12 years or so with some All-Pros from Shaver. It was kind of back to the first engine I had when I started 410 racing. They are kind of soft and super drivable. You can just stand on the throttle and worry about turning the steering wheel." Last Sunday at the track where he has had the most success in his career, Roa qualified second fastest in his eight-car group with a time of 13.890. That was the seventh fastest of the 26 cars that showed up to race at the 60-year-old speed plant. He followed that up by going from his fourth-place starting spot to finishing third in his 10-lap heat. For the 30-lap main on the track that was anything but smooth as a baby's behind or a pool table on the night, Roa began in the 11th position. The wily veteran momentarily raced up to fifth. However, things unraveled after that. "We had some decent speed," Roa recalled. "We ran third in our heat race and we were not the fastest in our group. With the format, running third in our heat started us pretty far back in the main." "There was just kind of one strip of moisture and grip in the racetrack," Roa continued. "In that strip it was really rough and it was really hard to get by guys. I had a really good restart in the middle of the race and I was fifth or maybe sixth. Got by a couple of guys I was stuck behind most of the race and then the caution came out on the same lap. They got put back in front of us." Not long after the race restarted, Roa tangled with another car in turn three and flipped toward the turn four crash wall, ending his night. "I think a lapped car that was a couple cars ahead of me got woahed up in the corner and everybody checked up," he said of the end of his race. "I just didn't get her woahed up in time. I haven't even taken it out of the trailer yet. Looking at it in the pits after the races it looks like it is just front end damage. Some radius rods, a couple shocks, and a Jacob's ladder at this point. All the cheap stuff. I said that (cheap stuff) with air quotes. I don't think it was really a big hit. Watching the video it almost looked like it spun like a top on the top of the car. Hopefully, the chassis is okay and we will put her back together." While the race did not end the way he hoped, Roa did achieve a goal he set out to when he put the car together. The night was all about family. "It was really just my family," Roa said of the crew that was there for the night. "Had my dad, uncle, mom, wife, and daughters. That was the gang. I wanted to have the family deal together one more time. That was the whole point of getting the gang back together and doing it for fun." Roa is off the next couple of weeks but will return to action on September 21st when the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series returns to its home track, the "Southern California Home of Major League Sprint Car Racing," Perris Auto Speedway. The racing veteran has a lot of advertising space available on the car and is seeking marketing partners for the remainder of the 2023 campaign. If interested, use the contact information at the top of this release. "Yeah, every little contribution helps," Roa stated when asked if he would like to add some sponsors. "I don't know how much we will race it, and when we will race it. After crashing Sunday night, that cost a lot of money. We are always looking for somebody to jump on board. We have blank sides of the hood, so there is plenty of room." Roa would like to thank his sponsors, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, ALR Virtual Services, Burris Racing, Caltrol, Competition Suspension, Simpson Race Gear, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. - DOUBLE DUTY FOR SEXTON GATLIN RACING THIS WEEKEND AT KERN AND SANTA MARIA
(Lakeside, CA, August 29, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing returns to action on Labor Day Weekend when it races in two different series at two different tracks within 24 hours. First will be the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series' Bob Vermeer/Narcie Ferreira Classic on Saturday night at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. Twenty-four hours later, team drivers Brent Sexton and his 20-year-old son Grant will take on the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at the Santa Maria Speedway. Saturday's race will be the second for SGR at Kern. Last year, during his Rookie of the Year campaign, Grant appeared with USAC/CRA and placed 12th in the main on April 29th. For 52-year-old Brent, who is trying to win the series Rookie of the Year award this season, it will be his maiden voyage at the track that is located adjacent to the 5 Freeway. Brent enters Saturday's show third in the USAC Rookie of the Year standings and 13th in the overall season-long championship points with 11 races remaining on the schedule. Grant's sophomore season in the 20-year-old series has not gone how he had hoped. He has been caught in the wrong place at the wrong time too often and has been caught up in others' mistakes. His best series outing thus far was a sixth at Perris Auto Speedway on June 22nd. He goes into this week's battle at Kern 15th in USAC Series points. Grant's season has gone much better with the USCS. In four starts, he has been in the top five two times and in the top 10 three times. His best finish came at Ventura on June 1st when he came in third on the 1/5 mile oval. Two weeks before that, he placed fifth on "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mile Banked Clay Oval," Scott Schweitzer's Bakersfield Speedway. His other top 10 in the USCS came when he took the checkered flag in seventh at Ventura. Brent has made a pair of main events in the USCS, with the best finish being 10th at Ventura on June 1st. In his last race in the series at Ventura in July, he was passing for the last transfer in the B main on the final lap when the red flag came out. Officials deemed the race complete at that point, and Brent missed the transfer to the A main by one position. Heading into the USCS' final appearance at Santa Maria in 2024, Grant sits 11th in the series standings, and Brent is 21st. If you want to see the father and son team square off against the West Coast's best this weekend at Kern and Santa Maria, the Bob Vermeer - Narcie Ferreira Classic kicks things off Saturday at Kern. Adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-12, admission is $10.00. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/. The grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. and cars will be on the track at 5:30. The first race will take the green flag at 7:00. The track is located at 13500 Raceway Boulevard in Bakersfield, California. The office phone number and email are (661) 835-1264 and mailto:info@kernraceway.com. On Sunday night at the famous 60-year-old Santa Maria Speedway, adult tickets for the USCS show are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. Kids 6-12 are only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. Gates will open at 4:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:00 and racing at 6:00. The Santa Maria Speedway is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. East County Electric Works, Keys Brothers, BR Motorsports, Maxima Oil, Automated Interiors, Sexton Fire Protection, BK Wings, Troy Dirt. - A NIGHT OF GOOD AND BAD FOR FLOWDYNAMICS AT PERRIS, LOGAN WILLIAMS RACES THIS SATURDAY AT KERN
(Ontario, CA, August 26, 2024) The last time the Flow Dynamics Racing Team hit the track at Perris Auto Speedway in the inaugural Brother Brett Classic, it was a mixed bag of highs and lows for drivers Logan Williams and Matt McCarthy. This Saturday night, August 31st, Williams heads north to Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway in Bakersfield for round #13 of the 23-race Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series season. Things started bright enough for the Flowdynamics duo at Perris. On the night that included the Brother Brett Trophy Dash with a purse of more than $4000 for the four fastest qualifiers, McCarthy and Williams qualified third and fourth quickest in the 20-car field. McCarthy, who calls Riverside, California home, turned in the third best time of the meeting when he toured the famous Riverside County oval in 16.866. Teammate Williams was just a tick behind at 16.959. The Brother Brett Dash was different from the normal racing trophy dash. It was contested Speedway Motorcycle style with four separate three-lap races. Each driver started in every starting position once. Each race paid three points to the winner, two points for the second-place finisher, one point for third, and zero to the driver who finished fourth. After the fourth race, the points were added up and that determined the finishing order of the dash. McCarthy, who dominated the dash a few years prior, was in contention for the win until the last three lapper. He scored eight points over the four races and finished second, just two points behind the winner. Williams notched four points and placed third. Williams, who came into the night third in USAC/CRA points, started fifth in the first 10-lap heat race. The 28-year-old who lives in Yorba Linda, California, drove forward to third to guarantee his spot in the first three rows in the main event. McCarthy entered the field of battle two heats later and started sixth in his 10-lapper. He advanced to second and earned a spot in the first three rows of the upcoming 30-lap A main. For the main, the Flowdynamics team drivers started side by side in row two. Williams was on the inside, and McCarthy was to his right. Williams battled in the top three spots early on, with McCarthy not far behind. Williams actually took second on lap two before slipping back to third. At the 10-lap mark, Williams was third, and McCarthy was sixth. Five laps later, at the halfway point, Williams was fifth, and McCarthy was seventh. However, things were about to change. Going into turn three on the 21st circuit, McCarthy, who was running eighth, caught a piece of the inside berm going into turn three. The contact sent him into a violent series of flips that did not end until he got into the turn-four crash wall. The track crew was quickly on the scene and put out a small fire on the bottom of the car. Fortunately, McCarthy, who was battered and bruised in the crash, climbed out under his own power. The next day, he took a precautionary trip to the ER. Except for a concussion and some aches and pains, he checked out okay. After the race restarted, Williams crossed the finish line sixth, giving him ten top-10 finishes in 12 starts this year. Williams will close the month of August this Saturday, the 31st, in the Bob Vermeer & Narcie Ferreira Classic at Kern. Going into the race, he is fourth in the championship chase, just eight points out of third. The likable racer recorded his season's best finish while racing at Kern in June. He started the main event in ninth and drove up to second. For fans wanting to see Williams in action Saturday at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway, adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/. Hot laps will begin at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00. The track is located at 13500 Raceway Boulevard in Bakersfield, California. The office phone number and email are (661) 835-1264 mailto:info@kernraceway.com.
