  Eddie Tafoya Jr. Takes Third at Mohave Valley in His 2026 Debut

  Chino Hills, CA — March 2, 2026 — A gritty performance earned Eddie Tafoya Jr. a hard-fought for third-place finish when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars visited Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway last Saturday night. It was the veteran driver's first race since closing out the 2025 season last November at Perris Auto Speedway. With a large, enthusiastic crowd packed into the grandstands and thousands more watching live on Flo Racing, Tafoya turned in the sixth-fastest qualifying time among the 22 cars on hand, stopping the clock at 14.228 seconds. The effort placed him on the inside of row three for the start of the third 10-lap heat race. Tafoya, who resides in Chino Hills, California, wasted no time charging toward the front in the heat. On the opening lap, he quickly picked off three cars to move into second. After a yellow flag flew at the end of the first circuit, Tafoya seized the lead entering turn three on the restart and paced the field for the final nine laps. For Tafoya, the 2019 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns Champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, the impressive heat race win, combined with his strong qualifying effort, earned him the pole position for the 30-lap main event. When the green flag dropped, Tafoya rocketed into the lead and set the early pace. He led the first eight laps before surrendering the top spot. By the midway point, he had slipped back to fourth, but the battle was far from over. Running the bottom groove to perfection, he sliced past two competitors to climb back into second. In the war that unfolded over the final 10 laps, Tafoya slipped back to third. From there, he fended off repeated challenges to secure a podium finish that equaled his best-ever performance on the lightning-fast Arizona clay oval. "I was leading and trying to find some grip," Tafoya told the crowd after the race. "It is kind of hard there leading with K.T. (Kevin Thomas Jr.) back there. He runs the bottom and Ricky (Lewis) is going to pound the top. It is kind of difficult figuring where to go. Two or three of them got around me. I had to regather myself, pull back together, make good decisions and get back up on the wheel." "I think everyone from California wanted to get that one for Bill Perkins," he emotionally told the crowd. "He put a lot of us in these racecars." Tafoya will take this weekend off before returning to action with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the 12th and 13th of this month.   Eddie Tafoya Jr. Hopes His First Start of 2026 Is as Hot as the Arizona Temperature

  Chino Hills, CA — February 26, 2026 — Chino Hills, California, sprint car veteran Eddie Tafoya Jr. will open his 2026 racing season Saturday night, February 28, when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars visit Arizona's racy 1/3-mile, banked Mohave Valley Raceway. Spectator gates at the desert oval—where temperatures are expected to soar to 94 degrees in the afternoon—will open at 4:00 p.m., with the first green flag dropping at 6:00. The 28-year-old returns to a track where he has enjoyed consistent success since sprint cars made their return to the facility in 2022. In seven USAC/CRA starts at the speedway—located just five minutes from the Colorado River and 25 miles from Laughlin, Nevada—Tafoya has recorded five top-10 finishes, including two top-five results and a best finish of third. Simply put, it is one of his favorite places to race. "We are usually a real good car out of the box when we get there," Tafoya said before a race in 2025. "I think the only times I have not run good there is when I have had motor issues." Last season, after opening his year with six USAC National Sprint Car Series races in Florida, Tafoya made his first USAC/CRA start of the year at Mohave Valley. He qualified 10th in a stout 31-car field, but trouble struck during qualifying when the torque ball backed off. The issue forced the team to replace the entire torque tube and bell housing, sidelining Tafoya for his heat race as the crew thrashed to make repairs. Once back on track, Tafoya started on the outside of the front row in the 12-lap B Main, needing a top-six finish to advance to the 30-lap feature. He left no doubt, racing to a third-place finish to earn his transfer spot. In the main event, the 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns Champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, delivered one of the standout performances of the night. Rolling off from 10th on the outside of row five, Tafoya methodically carved his way through the field to finish fifth. Only two drivers passed more cars during the exciting feature.   Crashing, Candy & Chaos: Night of Destruction Opens 2026 This Saturday at Perris

  Perris, California — February 17, 2026 — After nearly four long months of waiting, Southern California racing fans can finally rejoice. This Saturday night, February 21, Perris Auto Speedway roars back to life as it hosts the first Night of Destruction of the 2026 season—aptly billed as the "Craziest Show on Dirt." Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m., setting the stage for a night of motorized mayhem and clean, family-friendly fun. The first wild crash of the evening is slated to erupt just after 7:05 p.m., and the chaos won't let up until the final checkered flag flies. As has become a beloved tradition, fans are encouraged to bring all the kids in the neighborhood for the free on-track candy giveaway and autograph session with all of the drivers from 5:15 to 6:00 p.m. "What was a late Halloween suggestion by Shelley Wooldridge several years ago, the pre-race autograph and candy giveaway session has turned into a night of destruction tradition," Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian said. "It gives kids in the grandstands the chance to meet the drivers. That means a lot when it comes to race time. Kids can put a face to a car and cheer them on like newfound friends. That is pretty big as there are a lot of children at every Night of Destruction." Fans in attendance on Saturday night will see all five of the outrageous Night of Destruction classes battling it out. The evening's program includes daring Figure 8 racing, the always-unpredictable Figure 8 Trailer Race, rough-and-tumble Demo Cross, the Mighty Mini Stocks tackling the twisty road course, and—of course—the fan-favorite, zany Double Deckers. All six of last season's champions are expected to be on hand to defend their turf. The lineup includes four-time Figure 8 champion Jesse Gordon of Beaumont; Lane Hofarth of Hemet in the Figure 8 Trailers; Brett Wayland of Corona in Demo Cross; Lake Elsinore's Steven Green Jr. in the Mini Stocks; the father-and-son duo of Lonnie and Cale Skillman of Riverside in the Double Deckers; and Rob Multhaupt Jr. of Orange, the reigning Overall Iron Man Champion. "Last season's Night of Destruction finale was rained out on November 15th," Kazarian said. "In light of the rainout and waiting nearly four months, the drivers should be chomping at the bit to get out there and tear some stuff up. It should be very exciting." The only potential spoiler for Saturday's opener is the weather. Monday's rain, along with additional precipitation in the forecast in the next couple of days, may present a challenge for the track crew. "We have our fingers crossed," Kazarian said. "We will do everything we can to get the track in shape and get the show in. We are hoping that there will be less rain than what is predicted." Adult tickets for Saturday's "Crash Fest" are $25.00. Students ages 13-17 with a school ID are $15.00. Kids 6-10 are $10.00, and children 5 and under are free. Active military personnel with proper ID are admitted for $5.00.   Meet Perris Auto Speedway New Race Director Steve Russell

  Perris, California — February 9, 2026 — When Perris Auto Speedway kicks off its historic 30th Diamond Anniversary season this Saturday, February 14, there will be a new race director for the PASSCAR classes and subsequent Nights of Destruction beginning on February 21. Taking over for longtime race director Steve Aldis is past Southern California First Division Speedway Motorcycle racer Steve Russell. Russell first came to the track, affectionately known to fans as "The PAS," before COVID, when he took over as the scoreboard operator. Unfortunately, due to his commitment to his day job, he had to step aside. Three years ago, when track starter Kevin Winters moved to Minnesota, the famous Riverside County speed plant put out the word that it was looking to hire a starter. Russell, who lives in Temecula, California, said his day job had changed and he would like to apply for the job. As soon as promoter Don Kazarian got word that Russell wanted to apply, the search was over. He said the job was his. The past motorcycle racer excelled in the new post. In addition to flagging PASSCAR Stock Car Races and the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, he also flagged World of Outlaws and High Limit Sprint Cars at the track. Once again, he took to the job immediately and did an impressive job. That brought us to 2025 and Aldis' decision to step aside from his long-time race director position. This time, there was not a hunt to hire someone. Kazarian immediately wanted Russell to fill the role. When the promoter asked him if he wanted the job, Russell quickly accepted. "Steve has the demeanor I was looking for," Kazarian said. "He has experience. He spent enough time last year to be seasoned in that job and do it like a pro in 2026. Steve Aldiss did a great job training him." On Monday night, Russell took some time to talk about his racing background and the new position. PAS: Race Director is another new job for you at Perris Auto Speedway. How excited are you about this? Russell: I am really excited. I am looking forward to it, with it being the 30th year for Perris Auto Speedway. It is going to be some great racing and fun for the fans. I like the position, and I like working with all of the drivers and the team at Perris Auto Speedway. Being able to work with Don is exciting as well. PAS: After such a long time being involved in Speedway Motorcycle racing, did you ever think you would be working in auto racing? Russell: I did not think I would work in auto racing. That is a funny question. I always liked going (to auto races) but I did not see myself working in it. I kind of got the bug when I was doing the scoreboard. Then it was exciting being the starter. Now I am looking forward to this new adventure. PAS: Let's talk about your grandpa, Warren Russell. He was big into racing, including Indy Cars. Russell: Yes, my grandpa was big into Indy Cars. He had some friends who ran the Indy 500 and actually won the Indy 500 (Jim Rathmann in 1960). Grandpa would go every year and spend some time back at Indy. He had a drag race funny car, a couple of top fuel hydros. He had a land speed record for a while. I have always been around some form of racing. PAS: Your grandpa had a company name Russell and Russell. One of my favorite stories about him is that his company put in the initial grandstands at Ascot in the 1950s, and about 38 years later, it put the initial grandstands in at Perris Auto Speedway. He also put grandstands in at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles and every year at the Rose Parade. Russell: Yes, he did have a construction company. Looking back, I started working there at a really young age. Before that, I would go in and hang out with him during the day. Working there taught me a lot. A little about everything. Driving a forklift, towing a forklift, loading trucks, and doing some construction stuff. Looking back, it was a great learning experience and taught me a lot. PSA: He also got you started in racing. How did that come about, and what persuaded you to race Speedway? Russell: I was at the office one day with him. I had been doing some motocross riding for fun. I asked him what he thought about going motocross racing. He thought that was kind of dangerous and said let's look at Speedway. I kind of laughed as we were going to do Speedway with no brakes. He got me a bike and the stuff I needed to go with it. We started going every weekend to Ken Maely's place in Corona. We would go there and ride every weekend. PAS: If I remember correctly, that was the mid-80s, correct? Russell: That was probably 1985, and I started competing in Speedway in 1986. That was in Third Division. I moved all the way up to First Division with him. He sponsored me in my time doing that. I rode First Division for a lot of years in So Cal. We had a great time doing it together. I ended up getting hurt in 1991 or 1992. I had reconstructive knee surgery and stepped away from racing for a really long time. We actually moved out of state for a bit, but we came back in 2010. My grandpa and I were having lunch together again. I looked at him and said, 'What do you think about going Speedway racing again?' So we started racing again from 2010 to 2015. PAS: Your grandpa not only sponsored you, but he sponsored and helped a lot of the top riders in So Cal. That exposed you to some other riders. Which of those guys helped you? Russell: Bobby Schwartz was a big help to me. My grandpa started sponsoring him right when I was moving into Second Division. My grandpa helped him, and Bobby helped me. Steve Lucero was a big help. Kelly Inman was a big help, too. Actually, for a season or two, we actually worked together. He sponsored me, built a bike for me, and I rode for him. PAS: Lets go back to your new job at Perris. Is there anything you can think of that may be a challenge for you? Russell: I think there is going to be a learning curve for sure at the beginning. I was directing the races for the last couple of months at the end of 2025. Steve (Aldis) was a huge help in transitioning and getting me into that role, and learning. I think the biggest part will be knowing the rules right away when they happen. I have had the whole off-season to brush up on that. When I am up in the press box, I will have my notebook and everything to help. What I hope to do is run fair racing for everybody. Keep it safe and keep the program moving along. Being there to listen to the drivers, but also keep a firm hand on what is going on as well. It is really fast-paced, and there is a lot going on in the press box that you have to block out because there are so many of us up there. I think it is going to be a good season. PAS: Anything else to add about your new gig? Russell: I am thankful to Don for the opportunity to be the race director. I am also thankful for Steve spending that extra time working with me and helping me move into this position. Also, the whole Perris Auto Speedway team. It is a great group of guys that work really well together. I am thankful for that as well.   Perris Auto Speedway's 30th Season Opener Is One Week Away

  Perris, California — February 7, 2026 — For longtime racing fans in Southern California, it may seem hard to believe, but the 30th season opener at Perris Auto Speedway is just one week away. The milestone campaign launches on Saturday, February 14, when the track hosts the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, along with the PASSCAR Super Stocks and American Factory Stocks. Spectator gates open at 5:00 PM, with racing getting underway at 7:05. One week later, on February 21, Night of Destruction makes its 2026 debut. The season opener marks the first of 24 nights of racing action on the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval, conveniently located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds. Headlining the sprint car portion of the opener is RJ Johnson, the second-generation standout from Laveen, Arizona, who will be chasing a rare three-peat in the USAC/CRA Series. Joining him in pursuit of a three-peat is American Factory Stock standout David Stites of Canyon Lake, who is also aiming for his fourth Factory Stock championship in five years. Stites comes in red-hot after winning the first five Factory Stock races of 2025. Equally dominant in 2025 was Shaun Estes of Riverside, who controlled the PASSCAR Street Stock division. Estes won six of seven main events, finishing second in the lone race he didn't win. The effort earned him his second Street Stock championship, though unlike Johnson and Stites, his return to the top required patience—thirteen years, to be exact. "Somehow, the first race at The PAS was 30-years ago on March 30," Kazarian said. "Actually, it should be our 31st season. However, in 2020, we only got one race in due to Covid. We do not count that one." Fans attending in 2026 will also enjoy lower ticket prices. Adult tickets and tickets for seniors 65 and over on USAC/PASSCAR nights have been reduced by $5.00, now priced at $30.00 and $25.00, respectively. The speedway has also brought back student pricing for teens ages 13-17, with tickets reduced by $20.00 to just $15.00. Kids ages 6-12 are $10.00, active military with ID are admitted for $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. Fairgrounds parking is $20.00. "On a sprint car night, the teen ticket is a huge savings," Kazarian said in January when the schedule was released. "It is a $20.00 savings on those tickets from last year's price. And it will be a $10.00 savings on Night of Destruction. I looked at other racetracks in Northern California, Central California, and Arizona. Most tracks in our marketplace have a teen price, and we are bringing them back." Advance tickets for all races are available at tix.com.
