- MLRA SET FOR THURSDAY AT I-70 SPEEDWAY & CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY AT TRI CITY SPEEDWAY
Wheatland, Missouri (October 7th, 2024) - The 2024 season for the Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) will see the final curtain call this weekend, but not before drivers take to the track at the I-70 Speedway and the Tri-City Speedway in a pair of highly critical $7,000 to win showdowns. Friday night's action will culminate with the crowning of the Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the year and the $20,000 MLRA Series Champion. I-70 Speedway to host "K.C." Cup: I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO will open the gates for a special Thursday night event on October 10th, to get the weekend started. The $7,000 to win inaugural running of the "K.C. Cup" Presented by Mid American Automation Services, comes about because of a late summer rain out for the second consecutive year. The super-fast ½ mile high banked facility last hosted the MLRA in 2022 as part of a co-sanctioned event with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS), which was won by Hudson O'Neal. After sitting idle for many years, the track located just east of the Kansas City metro area reopened in 2021 after an extensive renovation project which included many updates to the fan experience along with removal of its former asphalt surface and a return to the dirt. Tri-City Speedway Championship Moves to Friday Night: The MLRA "Championship Weekend" will once again return on the Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL on Friday night October 11th for the crowning of the series champion. Originally scheduled as a two-night affair for Friday and Saturday, speedway officials have made the difficult decision to cancel the Saturday portion due to a family commitment which requires them to be out of state. This scheduling change will now move the Saturday purse up one day, making Friday night now worth $7,000 to win and $700 to start. This will mark the fifth consecutive season with the 3/8-mile facility playing host to the series championship. "My mom is currently residing in Florida, and due to unfortunate circumstances with her health we need to move her back to the St. Louis area to be closer to family, so we can provide additional care for her. With the incoming hurricane it is going to prevent us from safely getting to her mid-week as we had hoped," explained promotor Tammy Gundaker. "We do not want to cancel Saturdays planned finale, but we also have to do best for our family, and that means being there and helping to make this move as soon as we can get into Florida which we believe will be Saturday. We are looking forward to making Friday special for the teams and we are excited to be the finale of what looks to be a great championship battle between Chad, Chris, and Tony." The annual "Trunk or Treat" for the kids to cruise the pits and visit drivers will now be moved to Saturday, October 26th from 2 - 4 pm, and held in conjunction with the speedways B-Mod Bash. LUCAS OIL MLRA "CHAMPIONSHIP OUTLOOK" With just two nights to decide the $20,000 to win MLRA Championship, the intensity should be tight when drivers make their way into the I-70 Speedway on Thursday night. Three drivers will have a legitimate mathematical shot at taking home the title, making every single position on the track as important as ever. Chad Simpson (Points Leader): The four-time Lucas Oil MLRA Champion will enter the weekend with a 65-point advantage, as he looks to capture his third consecutive series crown. Simpson's margin stood at 160 points just six races ago, but has slowly dwindled down with pressure coming from brother Chris Simpson and Tony Jackson Jr. Of the top three drivers only, Chad Simpson competed in the MLRA's last bout at I-70 in 2022, finishing in 10th and giving himself a bit of an edge when it comes to experience on the highbanks. Simpson's championship chasing experience will likely come into play down the stretch as well. Not only is he a 20-time MLRA winner, but he also has six Corn Belt Clash Series Championships to his name. A championship for Simpson would put him in elite company, surpassing Terry Phillips (4) and joining Alan Vaughn as the only five-time MLRA champions. Only Al Purkey has more titles, as the 2024 Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductee has seven titles to his credit. He would also tie Vaughn as the only driver in series history to win three consecutive championships. Chris Simpson ( -65 points): Last year's MLRA runner-up told fans following a Labor Day weekend victory that they would be in for a treat over the remaining races, as he expected his brother and himself to put on a great battle for the championship. 24 hours later it looked like that would be all for not, as he recorded a 24th place showing after a power steering line failure. Following a 26th place run at the Davenport Speedway it looked even more unlikely, until this past weekend when he erased 135 points in three nights off what was a 200-point deficit. Two runner-up finishes and a $10,000 victory in Saturday's MLRA Fall Nationals has Chris Simpson entering the weekend as the hottest of the title contenders. Tony Jackson Jr. ( -75 points): Jackson came out of the box strong in 2024, as the only MLRA regular to secure a top five in the MLRA Spring Nationals season opener. The next three events however found Jackson with finishes outside of the top ten and in a hole. Turn the page to August, and with the help of a new Longhorn Chassis the two-time MLRA Champion has found his stride once again, finishing no worse than 9th with a series leading 5.11 average finishing position since. If it comes down to a battle on Friday at Tri City Speedway don't count out "Prime Time". Jackson has found his way to victory lane at Tri City Speedway 4 of the past 5 seasons, proving he knows his way around the 3/8-mile race track and is capable of capturing his third career MLRA Championship. SUNOCO ROOKIE OF THE YEAR- Aaron Marrant has all but wrapped up the 2024 Sunoco Rookie of The Year title, which will be made official following Friday nights feature event at Tri City. Marrant and car owners Michael and Misty Meise have collected three top tens on the season including a 6th place at Lakeside Speedway. Thursday night will serve as another home game for Marrant, who lives just about 30 minutes from I-70. Marrant currently sits 8th in the season championship standings as well, and only 105 behind Dustin Hodges for 7th in the final rundown. I-70 Speedway: Odessa, MO "K.C. - LUCAS OIL MLRA SET TO TACKLE "FALL NATIONALS" TRIPLE HEADER WEEKEND
Wheatland, Missouri (September 30, 2024) - The Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) is headed towards one of the biggest weekends of the year, as the series returns to the Lucas Oil Speedway for one final round of action this upcoming weekend. For the first time since 2020 the MLRA "Fall Nationals" returns to the Diamond of Dirt Tracks, and for the first time in series history it comes in the form of a triple header weekend. With just two weekends remaining on the 2024 schedule for the Lucas Oil MLRA, one thing is for certain—a wide open points battle still looms for the top spot. This weekends action will kick off two consecutive 3-day weekends of racing, breaking the season down into a six-race battle to the championship. The MLRA "Falls Nationals" will take center stage at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO October 3rd, 4th, & 5th with three complete shows on tap. Thursday nights portion was originally slated as only a practice night for the MLRA teams, but after a long list of early season rain outs track and series officials decided to turn Thursday into a full $5,000 to win feature event to get the weekend started a day early. Friday night will again showcase the MLRA in another $5,000 to win 30 lap main event, before drivers tighten the belts one notch tighter for a $10,000 to win and $700 to start 50 lap finale on Saturday night. This weekend will mark the 8th time since 2014 that the Lucas Oil Speedway has hosted the October race weekend for the MLRA. Only Jesse Stovall (4) and Ryan Gustin (3) have multiple wins during the fall classic event. Both current Championship point leaders Chad Simpson (2018) and Tony Jackson Jr. (2019) are former event winners, along with the likes of Randy Timms, Billy Moyer Jr. and Bobby Pierce who scored his first ever MLRA win in the final night in 2016. Adding to the excitement of the weekend will be the return of the 8th Annual "Big Buck 50" featuring the Lucas Oil Super Stocks. Drivers will practice as well as qualify on Thursday night between late model action, run qualifying events on Friday night, and compete in their own 50 lap $10,000 to win main event on Saturday night. Turn Four News & Notes: MLRA "FALL NATIONALS" MyRacePass "Fast Time" BOUNS POINTS: The opening two laps of each night can play a large role in determining the season Championship, with the top driver in both Group "A" and "B" qualifying, or the overall fast time driver receiving 10 Championship Bonus Points. Thru 12 points events thus far Chad Simpson has managed to put 40 MRP Fast Time Bonus Points in his bank account, helping him to his current 100-point advantage over Tony Jackson Jr. 1,560 Up For Grabs—Championship Points That Is: Exactly 1/3 of the MLRA season will be contested over the final two weekends, leaving lots of room to climb to the top or find heartbreak depending on where your driver is sitting. It is possible to gain (or lose) 135 pts a night assuming all championship contenders start the "A" main, leaving a number of sleepless nights yet to come for the series top drivers. "Mr. Consistent.": Prior to the MLRA's last outing at the Davenport Speedway on September 14th, current Midwest Sheet Metal point leader Chad Simpson had not recorded a series finish outside of the top 12 in a non co-sanctioned event since an 18th place run on October 16, 2021. Crunching the numbers that's a remarkable span of 1,063 consecutive trips around the sun. 7-8-9-10 The Battle Continues: While a championship may be a mathematical stretch for the drivers currently sitting 7th thru 10th, they too are deep in a points battle of their own as the season draws to a close. After 12 rounds these drivers are separated by just 75 markers, or a point fund difference of $1,500 come seasons end. Gordy Gundaker leads this group by 55 over leading Sunoco Rookie driver Aaron Marrant. From there it's only 10 back to Dustin Hodges and another 10 back to Steve Stultz. For these drivers, every position truly does matter from here on out. MIDWEST SHEET METAL POINTS LEADER CHALLENGE STANDINGS: 1. Chad Simpson--- Mt. Vernon, IA 2. - GARRETT ALBERSON GOES BACK-TO-BACK WITH $10,000 "CORN STATE NATIONALS" VICTORY
Davenport, IA (September 14, 2024) - The Hawkeye State officially has a new King of the Cornfields, as Garrett Alberson backed up his thrilling victory on Friday night with another Lucas Oil MLRA victory in the finale of the "Corn State Nationals" at the Davenport Speedway on Saturday night. This time around Alberson had to roll from third on the starting grid for the 40-lap affair behind from row starters Tyler Bruening and last nights runner up Dennis Erb Jr. Bruening grabbed the nights MyRacePass Fast Time award and was able to take advantage of his pole position to lead the opening circuits. The first of two cautions waved on lap 8 when Chad Mahder slowed on the race track with a flat right rear tire. On the restart it was 4th starting Brandon Sheppard moving ahead of Erb Jr. for the runner up spot while Alberson also snuck by to grab third. The final caution of the night was a big one in regards to the championship picture, as Dillon McCowan made contact with Midwest Sheet Metal Point Leader Chad Simpson, resulting in both drivers suffering irreparable damages that would sideline both from the event. Simpson and McCowan would be scored in 23rd and 24th respectively in the final run down. On the ensuing restart Bruening would once again put distance between himself and the field, running the narrow top side cushion of the ¼ mile while Alberson and Sheppard continued to battle for podium position. On lap 23, Alberson was able to pin his Longhorn chassis to the bottom of the speedway and grab the race lead from Bruening exiting turn two. For the second night in a row Alberson had to make all the right moves in a battle with lapped traffic, and was able to hold off a pair of late race advances by Sheppard to score the $10,000 victory. Sheppard had an opportunity late after clearing lapped traffic, but was not able to close to within striking distance and settled for second. Bruening ended his night with an MLRA career best 3rd place finish. Tyler Erb raced his way from 8th on the grid to 4th, while McKay Wenger rounded out the top five in his first MLRA start of the season. Garrett Alberson and team celebrate for the second night in a row after topping the Corn State Nationals at the Davenport Speedway. Photo Credit: Mike Ruefer Photos "I knew early I would have to get up there and burn that top in with them guys and just keep the speed up, that's typically just how it goes it seems like," explained Alberson. "I was hoping I would be the guy that found the bottom at the right time. It looked pretty wet down there when we got going, cautions just kind of fell my way right there with positioning and all." "I think I just fell into the right places at the right time. I knew the lane was probably going to change somewhere in there and you know I was trying to be smart with my tires. They did a great job with the track prep, it was transitioning and moving and dirt was flying it was just awesome. I'm super proud of my guys. I don't know if this is what I expected coming into the weekend, but this is really cool." "It's just such a pleasure to drive for them," noted Alberson of car owners Ken and Beth Roberts. It's cool to come and represent them here well. They have a lot of history in this area and it's just really special. I'm really glad I could finally do a little bit for them at Davenport." The Lucas Oil MLRA will next return to action on October 3rd - 5th for the MLRA "Fall Nationals" at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. Originally slated as a two night affair, the annual fall classic has expanded to now include three nights of racing with complete shows each night. Both Thursday and Friday nights action will pay $5,000 to win, leading up to Saturday nights $10,000 weekend finale. - ALBERSON TOPS ERB JR. -- HOLDS ON TO WIN OPENING NIGHT OF "CORN STATE NATIONALS"
Davenport, IA (September 13, 2024) - The opening night of the inaugural Corn State Nationals at the Davenport Speedway led up to the hype on Friday night, as Garrett Alberson erased a 2.892 second deficit without the help of a caution to score his third career Lucas Oil MLRA victory in a last lap thriller over Dennis Erb Jr. After finishing in the runner-up position one night ago, Alberson came out strong by topping the 34 car field in My Race Pass Qualifying. The driver of the Roberts Motorsports entry would go on to score his respective heat race win, lining him up alongside of Dennis Erb Jr. on the front row for the feature event. Alberson jumped to the lead on the opening lap, only to see it erased as Kayden Clatt spun in turn two and brought out the nights only caution, forcing a complete restart. This time around Erb was ready, and was able to get the jump on Alberson and took the first lead of the race. Alberson mounted a couple of early race charges, but by mid race Erb had managed to build up a near three second advantage as he entered lapped traffic on the exciting ¼ mile. As Erb began making his way through the back side of the field, Alberson slowly started to close ground on the race leader. Erb continued to weave his way through traffic, in an effort to keep multiple cars between himself and a charging Alberson. With just five laps to go Alberson found the back bumper of Erb's XR-1 Rocket Chassis and used a couple of different lines to find a way around Erb for the lead on lap 27. Erb would continue to apply pressure in the closing laps, setting up a dramatic finish. As Alberson exited the low line of turn four on the final lap he found himself caught behind lap traffic, while Erb had a clear shot to the front by virtue of a high side run to the finish line. Alberson would make contact with the back end of the lapped car of Steve Stultz, pushing him across the finish line and scoring the dramatic win by .250 seconds over Erb. For the second night in a row, Frank Heckenast Jr. capped off the podium in third, while Chad Simpson extended his MLRA championship point lead with a strong 4th place run. Dustin Sorensen would round out the top five, as the Rochester, MN driver came from seventh to a career best 5th place finish under the MLRA banner. "It was kind of a different race then I would have expected," Alberson explained in victory lane. "Usually, you would think it would be the other way around, and I would be the one up there burning the top down and Dennis on the bottom. This car was really good and I knew I needed to pace myself and take care of my tires, its real easy to over do your tires. When I felt like I had a really good car I paced myself and kind of let it come to me and I was glad I did as it gave me a lot of options there at the end. It was a close race and got a little wild with the lapped cars there at the end, but everybody did their job and it was awesome." After letting a win slip away the night before he continued, "I just didn't work that lapped traffic well enough last night. Dennis was so good there on the top at first, but I didn't know if he was going to use his tires up or if he was just really that good. Once I started to get close to him that's when I knew it was time to make some stuff happen and I really wanted to win this race. This place has been tough for me, but it's a great track and they did a great job with it tonight. It had multiple grooves, and hats off to them, it was a fun race right there." Racing at the Davenport Speedway will continue on Saturday night with the conclusion of the inaugural "Corn State Nationals". Another complete show is on tap, with $10,000 going home with the winner. - TYLER ERB SWEEPS INAUGURAL "HAWKEYE LAND 40" AT CEDAR COUNTY RACEWAY
Tipton, IA (September 12, 2024) - Tyler Erb kept his Lucas Oil MLRA record perfect on the season Thursday night, by winning the inaugural "Hawkeye Land 40" at the Cedar County Raceway. The win marks his second MLRA win of 2024 in as many starts, with the first coming back on May 5th, at the Adams County Speedway in Quincy, IL. Erb's perfect night started off with him collecting a special $500 bonus for recording the nights overall Fast Time in MyRacePass qualifying thanks to Pit Crew BBQ, which he then followed up with a heat race victory to place him on the pole for the start of the 40 lapper. Garrett Alberson who also locked up a heat race win took the green alongside on the front row. As Erb led the field into the Nutrien Ag Solutions start zone for the initial start, a major pile-up occurred in the middle of turn three as the field bunch up behind the front row starters. The incident which brought the race to a stop involved nearly half of the field, but fortunately all but Jimmy Vanzandt were able to continue on. The opening laps were filled with a number of cautions including a second caution on lap 1 when Matt Ryan came to a stop on the front stretch, ultimately ending his night. After back-to-back cautions on laps 5 and 6 the race would go green until the end. With Erb out front from the drop of the green it appeared that multiple drivers were going to be up to the challenge in the early going, with Garrett Alberson being the first to mount a charge. Alberson was able to race by off the exit of turn two to take the race lead from Erb, but only momentarily, as the driver of the Best Performance # 1 was able to power back by Alberson before the duo returned to the start finish line. With the top two pulling away, action in the top ten stayed hot with charges from Frank Heckenast Jr. as well as Chris Simpson and Tony Jackson Jr. who charged into the top five from their 7th & 8th row starting spots respectively. Alberson was able to reel in Erb a couple of times as the leaders worked into heavy lapped traffic, leaving only nine cars on the lead lap at the conclusion of the main event. As the raced passed halfway, Erb began to distance himself from the field, and drove away in the closing laps to a 2.635 second victory over Alberson. "I'm more of a rhythm guy, the more laps I can make I can see where I make mistakes and can do better the next lap," commented Erb of the long green flag run to end the race. "I like it when it goes all green, especially when you're leading." Frank Heckenast Jr. 3rd (Left), Tyler Erb 1st (Center), Garrett Alberson 2rd (Right) Photo Credit Mike Ruefer Photos Alberson recorded his best MLRA finish of the season with a runner up, while Heckenast Jr. capped off a strong podium run in third. Tony Jackson Jr. once again grabbed the nights Swift Springs Move of the Race, for his late race pass that put him in the fourth spot, while Chris Simpson managed a 5th place run after going to a back up car following his qualifying session. Following the $5,000 victory Erb said of the race, "Garrett was really good. When I got to lapped traffic, I was not running the top as hard as I possibly could have. I seen Garrett underneath me a couple of times and I just knew I had to go and get clear of those lapped cars. It was a good car, I just had to make good decisions in traffic, and I was kind of fortunate they all were on the bottom, so it left the top wide open for me." Following his runner up finish Alberson noted, "I think in clean track I was probably as bout as good as he was. I could run that bottom pretty good and I had good straight-a-way speed when I was down there, but he could maneuver around and carry his speed into his entry around the top a little better to get through that lapped traffic. This was my first time running a super late model here, and it was a good race," he concluded. Heckenast Jr. was making just his second MLRA start of the season and he made it a good one. "We went from 6th to 3rd or 4th there pretty quick, and we could reach out and touch Alberson and Tyler for a moment and then about halfway through they picked up the pace and kept going and we faded. But it's been a little bit since we have been up here with you guys, so this feels pretty good," he commented of the podium finish. Lucas Oil MLRA action continues in Iowa for the next two nights, with racing moving to the Davenport Speedway and the inaugural running of the "Corn State Nationals". Friday nights opener at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds 1/4 mile will pay $5,000 to win, while Saturday nights weekend finale will put $10,000 on the line for the victory. - IOWA BOUND: MLRA SET FOR "HAWKEYE LAND 40" & "CORN STATE NATIONALS"
Wheatland, Missouri (September,10 2024) - The Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) will venture into Eastern Iowa this weekend for another trio of races, marking the series only Hawkeye State appearance of the season. With nine nights of racing remaining, this upcoming weekend of short track racing presents another critical stretch in the championship battle. For the first time in series history race teams will converge on the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, IA on Thursday night September 12th. Thursday nights MLRA event is a make-up following an early April wash out. K-Promotions will present the inaugural $5,000 to win "Hawkeye Land 40" on the ¼ mile semi banked dirt oval which rest on the grounds of the Cedar County Fairgrounds, just about 30 minutes northeast of Iowa City, IA. The Eastern Iowa facility has hosted a limited number of regional Late Model events in recent years, with the majority of those being under the former IMCA Derry Brothers sanction. Wheatland, Iowa's Justin Kay has been the dominating force in recent stops, accumulating five wins to lead all drivers. Current MLRA point leader Chad Simpson was a 2010 winner under the former Corn Belt Clash Series banner, and brother Chris is a two-time Cedar County winner with victories coming in 2011 & 2012. While the bullring is known for serving as an equalizer and showcasing driving talent, it also has the potential for once again opening the door to another first time MLRA winner. Bull ring action will continue Friday night September 13th, when the MLRA invades the Davenport Speedway located on the grounds of the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds. The first annual running of the "Corn State Nationals" presented by SR Promotions, will feature two complete nights of racing in Davenport, IA with Friday nights opener paying $5,000 to win. The weekend will conclude on Saturday night when the winners take will increase to $10,000 to win and $700 to start. Chad Simpson grabbed the win one year ago in the MLRA's most recent Davenport stop. Prior to Simpson's 2023 triumph, the ¼ mile produced back-to-back first time MLRA winners in hometown driver Spencer Diercks in 2022 and Ricky Thornton Jr. in 2021. The top three drivers in MLRA Championship standings each scored their first MLRA victories of the season over the recent Labor Day weekend. Chris Simpson and Tony Jackson Jr. both captured wins at the Lucas Oil Speedway, while four time series champion Chad Simpson collected a $10,000 payday in the 4th Annual Wiener Nationals at the Moberly Motorsports Park to conclude the weekend. While Chad Simpson was able to open up some breathing room in the last weekend of action, the battle for second is as wide open as it gets, with only 50 points separating drivers in positions 2 - 5. - SCHEDULE UPDATES: MLRA NOW SET FOR TRIO OF TRIPLE HEADER WEEKENDS
Wheatland, Missouri (September 4, 2024) - With a multitude of rainouts in 2024, Lucas Oil MLRA officials today announced a pair of schedule additions that will take place over the final two weekends of the racing season. With nine points events still on the schedule, it leaves ½ of the championship points battle yet to come over the next 7 weekends. "MLRA Fall Nationals": Lucas Oil Speedway The first change comes in the form of an additional race night for drivers and fans on Thursday, October 3rd at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. This night was originally set as an "Open Practice" session to kick off the Annual "MLRA Fall Nationals", but series and Track officials have agreed to transform this date into a full racing program featuring a $5,000 to win 30-lap main event that will be a full championship points night. The Thursday night event will go along with a full $5,000 to win show at the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks" on Friday night October 4th, before culminating the weekend on Saturday night the 5th with a $10,000 to win MLRA weekend finale. The MLRA Fall Nationals will be paired up for the first time with the 8th Annual "Big Buck 50" Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt, featuring three nights of qualifying and racing for Super Stocks that will conclude on Saturday night with a $10,000 to win weekend showdown of their own. Visit www.LucasOilSpeedway.com for more details and for info on weekend camping availability. "K.C. Cup": I-70 Speedway The final weekend of the season will transform into the "Road to Tri-City Championship Weekend", by way of the I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO. The I-70 event was washed out back on Saturday, August 24th, and will now shift to another weekend lead off event on Thursday, October 10th. The Inaugural running of the "K.C. Cup" Presented by Mid-American Automation Services will showcase the MLRA's best as they compete for a $7,000 to win top prize on the high banks in Odessa. This event will be just the second time that the MLRA has competed at I-70 Speedway in the tracks storied past. Joining the MLRA will be the POWRi/USRA Stock Cars competing for $1,000 to win. I-70's Thursday night showdown, will lead teams into the Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL on Friday and Saturday October 11th - 12th for the annual "MLRA Championship Weekend" Presented by St. Louis Screw & Bolt paying $5,000 & $7,000 to win on back-to-back nights to wrap up the season. As announced earlier this summer, the MLRA will make up an early season rain out at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, IA on Thursday night September 12th, with the first annual running of the "Hawkeye Land 40". Action will shift to the Davenport Speedway on Friday and Saturday for the Inaugural "Corn State Nationals" with complete shows both nights. Sept. 6, a fan favorite event returns to the dirt of the Davenport Speedway. It’s time again for the Night of Destruction, a news release says. The Night of Destruction is made up of Cheater Races, ...
- CHAD SIMPSON CAPTURES $10,000 PAYDAY WITH 4TH ANNUAL WIENER NATIONALS VICTORY
Wheatland, MO (September 1, 2024) - After a set back on the opening lap of the 4th Annual Wiener Nationals, Chad Simpson rallied and raced away from the field to score his first Lucas Oil MLRA victory of the season on Sunday at the Moberly Motorsports Park. After scoring the nights MyRacePass "Fast Time" Award and a convincing heat race win, Simpson rolled off for the nights 30 lapper on the outside front row alongside of veteran Billy Moyer. However, it was deemed that Simpson got a jump on Moyer before the duo entered the Nutrien Ag Solutions Start Zone, which resulted in Simpson being set back one row for the ensuing start. Moyer would take advantage of his front row starting position to take the lead on the opening circuit, despite a valiant effort by Simpson to still grab the races initial lead. Moyer controlled the race in the early going, but Simpson took advantage of lapped traffic and was able to slide by Moyer for the lead on lap number 11. That lead however only last one lap, as contact between Simpson and a lapped car allowed Moyer to overtake the MLRA's current point leader and get back to the front just prior to the nights first caution. Simpson would then take advantage on the restart and returned to the lead by sliding Moyer exiting turn four, a move good enough for the nights Swift Springs Move of the Race. With Simpson pacing the field and Moyer still in tow, this time it was Dillon McCowan making a charge toward the front from his 9th starting position. The nights second and final caution would slow the action with just 4 laps to go as heat race winner Aaron Marrant slowed on the track with a flat right rear tire. Simpson jump back to the front on the restart and would cruise uncontested to score the $10,000 victory by 1.617 seconds. McCowan took advantage of the restart to race by Moyer and collected his second runner-up finish in as many nights over Moyer, who himself scored his second podium of the weekend. Saturday night winner Tony Jackson Jr. had another sold run in fourth, while Chris Simpson rebounded to finish in fifth. "We still had solid fourth place finishes the last couple nights but this is what we are out here for. We want to win these races, and you know the championship is great, but win races and that part will come." The penalty on the initial start served as motivation for Simpson during the 30 lapper. "I'm not going to lie, I was a little disappointed on that initial start. I jumped it a little bit but Billy jammed the brakes too and probably made it look a lot worse than it was, but it is what it is. I got a little mad at myself and it was time to go then," he concluded. As for McCowan it was another solid podium run to wrap up his Labor Day Swing. "We pulled this car out after the first night this weekend at Lucas and the set up we have on it just really fits my driving style, and its been a lot of fun the last two nights. We let one slip through our fingers last night and kind of buried ourselves in qualifying tonight and in the heat race as fast as the track was. I feel like we had a pretty good recovery, and my guys didn't quit working, we just put our heads down and went to work to try and figure out what we could do to pass cars in the feature," he concluded. Moyer had his second podium finish in a row and noted, "We just had a third place car tonight, I'm not sure that 8 (McCowan) didn't have the best car there at the end. We just didn't tighten up near enough, and you live and learn. We are up on the podium here again at least, so we just have to keep getting a little better." Next up for the Lucas Oil MLRA will be a three-night stand on the eastern side of the Hawkeye state. Action will get underway with a make up event on Thursday night September 12th, at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, IA. The weekend will conclude with a two night stand on September 13th - 14th at the Davenport Speedway in Davenport, IA.
