  Diamond Dozen: Looking back at 12 memorable Lucas Oil Speedway moments during 2024 season

  WHEATLAND, MO. (Nov. 12, 2024) - Before closing the book on the 2024 racing season at Lucas Oil Speedway, it's time to take a look back in our annual review of the "Diamond Dozen," an overview of the top 12 moments. The list is compiled by Lucas Oil Speedway public relations director Lyndal Scranton with an assist from track announcer Shane Friebe. 1 - USMTS Show-Me Shootout expands and produces classic: Jim Chisholm outdueled Terry Phillips in a USMTS race for the ages on Night One of the 15th annual Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout Presented by Foley Equipment. It was the first time the event was expanded to two nights. Chisholm, the young gun from Osage, Iowa, led six of the final eight laps, but swapped the lead with Phillips, the veteran from Springfield, Mo., three times over the final stretch of the 40-lapper. Chisholm regained the lead from Phillips on lap 38 and held on from there to win by a narrow .445 seconds for the $5,000 prize. "We could run top to bottom. We ran through the middle a lot. I have to thank Terry. I don't know if he led some of those laps, but we were running side by side through there. I was a little bit better through one and two and he would get me back in three and four," Chisholm said in victory lane. Chisholm completed the weekend sweep with another $5,000 win the next night. "This is gonna stick with me for a really, really long time," Chisholm said, adding, "again, Lucas Oil gave us a really good race track. I didn't win the race on the line I started. To me, that's huge because it keeps us drivers working really hard on where we have to run." 2 - "Superman" does it again in Show-Me 100: Living up to his nickname of "Superman," Jonathan Davenport put on another dominating performance to cap Memorial Day Weekend's 32nd annual Show-Me 100 Presented by the Missouri Division of Tourism. Davenport led every lap, with only a parade of caution flags slowing him down in rolling to a $50,000 victory, a race shortened to 80 laps due to approaching thunderstorms. The Blairsville, Ga., driver took the checkers 5.92 seconds in front of runner-up Tim McCreadie. It was Davenport's eighth feature victory at Lucas Oil Speedway since the spring of 2023 and his second Show-Me 100 triumph. He also won the crown jewel race in 2015, leading all 100 laps. Davenport's approach wasn't without some danger. His night nearly ended on lap 22 when Neil Baggett of Columbus, Miss., and Brennon Willard of Lebanon, Mo., tangled between turns three and four with Davenport charging toward them. "Oh my God, that was so close," recalled Davenport, who took evasive action to slip between the two spinning cars while making only the slightest contact with Willard's right-rear quarterpanel. "I held my breath going through there. Luckily they just kept doing what they was doing and they didn't stand on the gas and try to spin around, because I actually had to slide off the brake pedal to miss the first one and then I gassed up and went back the other way to miss the other one." 3 - Tosh edges Brown in Full Fender Thriller: Richie Tosh of Salado, Ark. edged Brown in the Full Fender Challenge, featuring a field of 12 cars split between USRA Stock Cars and POWRi Super Stocks that ran features earlier in the evening. Both Tosh and Brown came out of the Super Stocks division. Tosh, a close third after leading early in the Super Stock feature, began fifth in the Full Fender Challenge. But it was Brown who appeared on his way to a double victory most of the way. Brown grabbed the lead on lap one and opened a 2.6-second gap on Tosh by lap seven when the first caution flew.After the restart, Brown and Tosh waged a battle at the front with Brown staying in front. Sixth-starting Fennewald, meanwhile, fell back to eighth by lap 11 after climbing as high as fifth at the caution. Tosh pulled alongside Brown out of turn four on lap 15. Brown was able to fend off the challenge - until the final turn. The leaders found themselves in lapped traffic on the final cirdcuit and Tosh, diving low in turn four, beat Brown by a hood's length at the checkers, the margin listed as .074 seconds. It worked out. Lapped traffic, we diced and sliced there a little bit," Tosh said. "It was a fun race and fortunate to get to do it." 4 - Tony Jackson Jr. rolls to Jenkins Memorial MLRA win: Tony Jackson Jr. saved his best for last in the 10th annual Lucas Oil MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial Presented by Rugged Radios over Labor Day Weekend. The veteran Late Model driver from Lebanon found speed on the high side and rocketed to the lead two laps to go, then held off Dillon McCowan and Gordy Gundaker for the $12,000 victory. Jackson never led - but also was never out of the top three - until the exciting finish when the 2021 Lucas Oil MLRA champ went from third to first seemingly in an instant. It was his second time to win a Ron Jenkins Memorial feature. "What a race track," an excited Jackson said in victory lane. "Ten thousand is a great pay day and they add an extra two thousand. Great people and a great family. We can't thank them enough. We're blessed to win it." 5 - Veteran Pursley celebrates first track championship: Jason Pursley could celebrate a Lucas Oil Speedway track championship after being runner-up multiple times — even if it wasn't exactly the way he would have planned it. Pursley spun and damaged his car on the opening lap in the feature, but by merely taking the green flag on Saturday night Pursley clinched the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified track championship in the Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series. Pursley was running second behind fellow front-row starter Chambers on the opening lap when he spun between turns three and four and was hit by multiple cars - including his son, Dayton. Pursley was unable to continue and credited with 20th place, but thanks to a 69-point lead to begin the night over Chad Lyle, who didn't start the feature, Pursley clinched the championship when the green flew. He didn't win a feature, but had five top-five finishes and three other top-10s this season. "It's good to finally not be the first loser," Pursley said with a laugh, thanking car owner Tom Campbell and his sponsors for the support. Other track championships for 2024 went to JC Morton (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), Justin Wells with a repeat in the Hermitage Lumber Late Models and William Garner (O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars). 6 - Phillips claims first Heartland Modified Tour event at Wheatland: Terry Phillips led all 30 laps, but it was a hard-fought battle to the finish as the veteran driver from Springfield captured the first USRA Heartland Modified Tour feature at Lucas Oil Speedway. Phillips earned $2,000 for the victory, which also was the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified headliner of the Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series. Phillips held off Gabe Hodges by .209 seconds in a close battle that came down to the final turn, pitting the old pro against a young gun. A total of 50 USRA Modified checked into the pits. Phillips, in his own Bloodline Race Car, utilized the low groove around the track from start to finish in his first added-money win at Lucas Oil Speedway in quite some time. "I love coming up here. I run pretty decent in my Modified," Phillips said, noting the extra-thrill of victory in front of fans who rarely get to see him race near home as he's moved to top-level Modified racing full time in recent years. Phillips hugged the low groove - as did the other contenders - until Hodges ducked to his inside in turn three on lap 19. Phillips was able to fend him off and Hodges moved up the track on lap 21 with Tyler Wolff putting the pressure on him. That allowed Phillips to extend his league to one second by lap 25. The leaders hit heavy traffic at the white flag and Hodges closed in for one final charge. Phillips was able to hang on by a car length at the checkers with Wolff right behind. 7 - High Limit Racing arrives with Courtney capturing win: Tyler Courtney took the lead with five laps remaining Friday night and went on to capture Night One of the Kubota High Limit Racing Diamond Classic in late June. Courtney, of Indianapolis, roared from third and into the lead after a lap 24 restart and went on to earn $10,000 with his fourth Kubota High Limit Racing feature win of the season. Courtney beat Brad Sweet at the finish with James McFadden capturing third. "The last time I ran here, I won in a Midget (in 2016) and it's pretty cool to come back in a winged car and have success," the ninth-starting Courtney said in victory lane. "That was fun, a lot of fun." Courtney, driving for Clauson Marshall Racing, finished two seconds clear at the checkers as he pulled away from Brad Sweet and the rest after taking the lead on lap 25. He was the fourth and final leader of the 30-lapper. 8 - Chris Simpson wins MLRA Fall Nationals finale and Taylor bags Big Buck 50: Chris Simpson's weekend of settling for second-best at the Lucas Oil MLRA Fall Nationals took a positive turn as the veteran Iowa driver found his way to victory lane on the third and final night of action. Simpson wrested the lead away from his older brother and MLRA points leader Chris Simpson on lap 19. He held it the rest of the way and went on to claim his second series victory of the season and second career MLRA victory at Lucas Oil Speedway. It was worth $10,000 as the co-headliner with the 8th annual Super Stocks Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt. The return of the Big Buck 50 after a four-year break saw a familiar winner. Peyton Taylor of Batesville, Ark., grabbed the $10,000 victory to go with his Big Buck victories in 2019 and 2020. He took command on lap 15 and led the rest of the way. Taylor also earned a spot in the sold-out Whitetail Trophy Hunt next month in mid-Missouri, which pays $15,000 to win. Chris Simpson capped a weekend of perseverance after finishing runner-up to Ryan Gustin two nights in a row. He said a poor qualifying performance left him displeased and with a lot of work to do, starting the final-nigh feature in eighth. "We love coming here," Simpson said. "I just have to thank all my guys. It's a good way to end it. We've been working hard all year. Taylor, who also won the last Big Buck 50 at Wheatland, took command from Terry Schultz on lap 15 and, driving a car borrowed from Jared Neiswander after Taylor's car was plagued by motor issues on both preliminary nights, was never seriously threatened the rest of the way. "To go back to back to back, it's pretty surreal," Taylor said. "Thank you all for bringing this back. This is a special event for a lot of us grassroots racers and I think everybody here had a fun time." 9 - Bubak, Doney score first Hockett-McMillin Memorial wins: The 14th annual Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial saw a pair of first-winners. Jake Bubak emerged from an early three-car battle, wound up leading 24 of 25 laps and held off a late charge from Scott Bogucki to capture the POWRi 410 Sprint feature. Meanwhile, Xavier Doney made the leap from race runner-up a year ago into victory lane in the POWRi WAR Sprint division. "This is really special," said Bubak, of Arvada, Colo., after earning $10,000. "The Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial is a big one, probably the biggest memorial race in sprint cars." The Hockett-McMillin Memorial pays tribute to the legacy of Jesse Hockett of Warsaw, Mo., who was a star in both the winged and non-wing sprint divisions when he lost his life in a shop accident in 2010. His cousin and crew chief, Daniel McMillin, was killed in an automobile accident in 2006. One year after finishing as the runner-up and with some other near-misses in this race, Doney of Odessa, Mo., was able to get it done in the wingless portion Doney took over the lead with 10 laps remaining and held off Jesse Vermillion of Greencastle, Ind., in a three-lap shootout after a late-race restart, to earn the $4,077 victory. 10 - Joe Chisholm takes USRA Nationals finale: Four nights of racing culminated with championship features in five divisions at Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday night, with the Summit USRA Nationals hitting the finish line. The big winner was young Iowa driver Joe Chisholm, who took command late in the USRA Modified feature and went on to capture the top prize of $4,000. Other winners were Jon Sheets in USRA B-Mods, Josh Cain in USRA Stock Cars, Oliver Monson in USRA Tuners and Jeremy Crimmins for the USRA Hobby Stocks. Ninth-starting Chisholm of Osage, Iowa, seized the lead on lap 39 and drove away after a restart. He beat J.T. Wasmund and Nic Bidinger for the biggest victory of his rookie USRA Modified season. Chisholm, 18, earned $4,000 for feature win No. 12 in 2024. He took the lead when dueling with USRA Modified national points leader Tyler Wolff as Wolff spun after he drifted too high in turn two. 11 - Fennewald collects bounty in Late Models: Johnny Fennewald of Appleton City led all 20 laps to capture the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Model feature Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Fennewald ended Justin Wells' feature win streak at six and claimed a $500 bounty in beating the reigning track champion. Wells was involved in a lap-six incident and had to restart at the rear of the field. He wound up seventh - but the way Fennewald was on a rail throughout it probably would not have mattered. While the bounty money was nice, Fennewald said he wishes he could have won it by outrunning Wells. "Honestly, I wouldn't even care if they paid me that bounty after this week; I want to race door-to-door and outrun him," Fennewald said of Wells, who would go on to win 11 features and another track championship. 12 - Logan Smith earns first win in unique format: Logan Smith of El Dorado Springs capitalized on a unique format and captured his first career feature victory in dominating fashion Saturday night. Smith, 20, ran away from the field to capture the second Twin 20 in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods after veteran Jon Sheets of Nevada grabbed the first 20-lap win. Both drivers took home $1,000 in the format which saw the 18 on the lead lap to finish the opener inverted, via fan vote, for the second feature. Smith was ecstatic in victory lane after hugging the bottom line while leading all 20 laps for his landmark personal victory. "I just tried to stay smooth and not slip up," Smith said. One for the road - Sweet rolls in High Limit Racing makeup: Before the final week of action in the The Kubota High Limit Racing season arrived, Brad Sweet already had clinched the season championship. Now he's added a couple of exclamation points to his title while in the Show-Me State. Sweet followed up his Tuesday-night triumph at I-70 Speedway in Odessa with a convincing feature victory on Wednesday at Lucas Oil Speedway's Diamond Classic. The Grass Valley, Calif., Winged Sprint veteran led 31 of 35 laps to earn $25,000 in the makeup of an event rained out at Wheatland on June 29th.   GUSTIN GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE FOR "K.C." CUP VICTORY AT I-70 SPEEDWAY

  Wheatland, MO (October 10, 2024) - Ryan Gustin rolled into the I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO for the first time on Thursday night, and displayed a dominate performance over the Lucas Oil MLRA field to capture his 3rd series win of the season. Having won two of the last three MLRA events, Gustin led the field to the green flag for the 30-lap main event, alongside of Dillon McCowan. The "Reaper" would jump out front at the drop of the green, and made sure to take advantage of the clean air at the super-fast I-70 and stretched out the advantage in just a matter of laps to two plus seconds. The nights first of four cautions slowed the pace on lap eight, when Daniel Hilsabeck slowed on the race track with a shredded right rear tire. Gustin led McCowan and championship leader Chad Simson back to the green, again pulling away until Jon Binning spun to the infield on lap 15 just as Gustin began to work his way through lapped traffic. Hilsabeck charged his way back through the field after his early race caution and was sitting in 6th, when he jumped the turn four cushion and made heavy contact with the turn three wall. The Earlham, Iowa driver's night came to an early end but fortunately he was able to walk away. The nights final stoppage occurred with just four laps to go for Steve Stultz who had slowed exiting turn four directly in front of the race leader Gustin. The final restart of the night would go single file, giving Chad Simpson one final shot at taking down his second win of the season. It would be all for not however, as Gustin picked up his 13th career Lucas Oil MLRA win by 2.777 seconds over Simpson. Tony Jackson Jr. would move up five positions, and in doing so earned the Swift Springs Move of the Race. McCowan and Chris Simpson would round out the nights top five. Following his $7,000 victory Gustin commented on his first ever visit to I-70 in saying, "This place is fun, I have never been here before. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it widened out there toward the end of that race. After the race I peeled to the bottom and I had traction down there too. All-in-all it was a very good night, very fast race car and an awesome place." The biggest challenge on the night for Gustin came in the form of the four restarts. "The biggest thing is just not getting over that ledge, and letting them get under you and get a run or what not. Your definitely on the edge of your seat any time you see a yellow flag. You know you have to nail your restart and especially not get slide there, especially when the top is that wide getting in like that. Combined with his runner-up finish, Simpson now holds a 95-point margin over Tony Jackson Jr. heading into Friday nights finale at Tri-City Speedway. "It cleaned off pretty good tonight and made it a pretty good race," commented Simpson. "That top was still pretty much dominate up there and made it pretty fast. I passed all my cars going around the bottom, so there was definitely some grip down there and we could make it work." "This place carries so much speed, it's really really tough, and if you don't get in the corner just right to where you can get off just right you can lose a ton of ground up and off the corner. You just kind of had to cry that momentum and get rolling and Ryan was pretty dam good tonight, but we did all we could to chase him." Jackson used as second consecutive podium run to leap Chris Simpson and take over second by a mere five points. "This was the first time I've been here, and I enjoyed it," noted Jackson. "We had trouble with the motor running earlier in the night, but we worked on it and picked our way up through there." "We heard it was fast," he noted of I-70. "But it slicked off and there was a top and there was a bottom, and that's all you can ask for," concluded the two-time MLRA Champion. The 2024 Lucas Oil MLRA season will conclude on Friday night October 11th, at the Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL. The series $20,000 championship battle will be on the line along with a $7,000 to win main event. Saturday nights schedule season finale was cancelled earlier in the week, putting all of the pressure on the championship drivers on "Championship Friday".   Kubota High Limit Racing season champ Sweet wins Diamond Classic makeup at Lucas Oil Speedway

  WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 9, 2024) - Before the final week of action in the The Kubota High Limit Racing season arrived, Brad Sweet already had clinched the season championship. Now he's added a couple of exclamation points to his title while in the Show-Me State. Sweet followed up his Tuesday-night triumph at I-70 Speedway in Odessa with a convincing feature victory on Wednesday at Lucas Oil Speedway's Diamond Classic. The Grass Valley, Calif., Winged Sprint veteran led 31 of 35 laps to earn $25,000 in the makeup of an event rained out at Wheatland on June 29th. "I'm really excited that we got to come back to Lucas Oil and complete the event," Sweet said after his ninth Kubota High Limit Racing feature win of the season. "Thanks to the crowd for coming out on a Wednesday night." Courtney, the Night 1 Diamond Classic winner on June 28 before severe weather wiped out the action the next night, couldn't quite pull off the delayed sweep. The Indianapolis resident said a poor first part of the race left him too much work to do. He settled for $10,000. "I think we were a little bit better here earlier in the year," Courtney said. "We got good at the end of the feature. We went from the pole to sixth or seventh and just had to dig deep. That last yellow, it was nice to start behind Brad, but clean air was a huge factor. They've been on it, really all year. Congrats to Brad and their whole team." Sweet, starting outside Courtney on row one, sprinted to the lead as the green flew and set the pace through four laps, with fourth-starting Ryan Timms running second. A red flag came out after Brent Marks flipped his car on the backstretch to halt the action. Action settled into a rhythm after the restart with Sweet holding on to a narrow lead until lap 10, when Timms took over the lead with an outside pass out of turn two. The 18-year-old Timms had a .069-second lead when action was stopped again on lap 13 as Kerry Madsen hit the wall in turn four. During the caution, Timms pulled into the hot pits to surrender the lead back to Sweet for the restart on lap 14. Timms, winner of the 2023 Hockett-McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway, had a side panel come loose and had to restart at the rear. He eventually rallied to 10th. "We got a little luck there with Ryan," Sweet said. "Sometimes it falls your way. I got control of the race and kind of changed my lines up and tried to carry more speed. "This track's really weird. You think you're gonna slow down and get gripped up, but it doesn't work that way here. Figuring this track out, it's new to a lot of us, but it's a beautiful facility." Sweet needed only three laps to open a 1.5-second lead over Tanner Thorson with Spencer Bayston third. The trio remained in that order until lap 25, when Courtney moved past Bayston for third, with Sweet having opened a two-second lead over Thorson. The second-running Thorson's chances went up in smoke on lap 27 when he slowed, fluid pouring from the motor. That elevated Courtney to second and Bayston to third with eight laps remaining. Sweet had a smooth restart and held off Courtney the rest of the way, earning the victory by .825 seconds. "We slumped in the middle of the season, but we've been strong for a while now," Sweet said. "It's nice to get the wins. The hard work pays off. It's such a grind throughout the year. We're gonna finish the year out strong." Two series races remain, this Friday and Saturday at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. Bayston wound up third with Corey Day fourth and Kasey Kahne fifth. "We've been clicking them off," Bayston said after his fifth straight top-five High Limit Racing feature finish. "Everything is kind of flowing right now and we're unloading fast. It's been fun. "We had a really good car on that last restart and had the top to myself, but (Courtney) took it away from us but we'll be happy to take home a top-three and continue this streak." Cory Eliason of Visalia, Calif., set the fast qualifying time with a lap of 12.957 seconds, just off the track record of 12.829 set by Rico Abreu on June 29th of this year.   Fast field returns to Lucas Oil Speedway on Wednesday for Kubota High Limit Racing Diamond Classic makeup

  WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 8, 2024) - When the Kubota High Limit Racing 410 Sprints appeared at Lucas Oil Speedway back on June 29th, Rico Abreu blazed around the 3/8-mile oval in 12.829 seconds for a new track record. A severe thunderstorm shortly after qualifying postponed Night 2 of the Diamond Classic. The stars of Kubota High Limit Racing return to Lucas Oil Speedway on Wednesday night for the makeup, with a complete new program scheduled starting with time trials. The forecast is for dry weather and plenty of speed in the mid-week program, which begins with hot laps at 6:30 with racing to follow. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. Wednesday and grandstands at 5. Fans with tickets from the June 29th rainout or wristbands from the pits that night can use those for admission. The order of events will begin with time trails, followed by opening ceremonies, heat races, the Kubota High Limit Sprint Dash, B-Mains and the 35-lap feature. There's an opportunity for fans to get a free upgrade to a pit pass while donating items for victims of hurricane Helene, which recently struck the southeastern United States. Kubota High Limit Racing, along with Speedway Children's Charities, Texas Motor Speedway, I-70 Speedway and Lucas Oil Speedway are joining forces to gather items for hurricane relief efforts. While originally a diaper and baby wipes-focused drive, fans who donate new blankets and/or unopened diapers of any size and baby wipes will get one free pit pass upgrade per item at the track where the donation is made on that race night. Cash donations will also be accepted. Lucas Oil Speedway donations will be collected at the VIP Door of the ticket booth starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Fans can use their tickets from the June 29th Diamond Classic rainout or purchase general admission tickets on race night and upgrade to the pit pass. Donation stations also will be set up at other Kubota High Limit Racing stops this week: Tuesday at I-70 Speedway in Odessa, Mo., donations will be collected at the High Limit Racing-branded pop-up tent inside the main grandstand entrance starting at 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway in Forth Worth, at the Texas Motor Speedway-branded tent inside the main grandstand entrance starting at 4 p.m. each day. Those unable to attend but who wish to donate may do so through Speedway Children's Charities at https://www.speedwaycharities.org/events/texas/hurricane-helene-diaper-drive/.   MLRA SET FOR THURSDAY AT I-70 SPEEDWAY & CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY AT TRI CITY SPEEDWAY

  Wheatland, Missouri (October 7th, 2024) - The 2024 season for the Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) will see the final curtain call this weekend, but not before drivers take to the track at the I-70 Speedway and the Tri-City Speedway in a pair of highly critical $7,000 to win showdowns. Friday night's action will culminate with the crowning of the Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the year and the $20,000 MLRA Series Champion. I-70 Speedway to host "K.C." Cup: I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO will open the gates for a special Thursday night event on October 10th, to get the weekend started. The $7,000 to win inaugural running of the "K.C. Cup" Presented by Mid American Automation Services, comes about because of a late summer rain out for the second consecutive year. The super-fast ½ mile high banked facility last hosted the MLRA in 2022 as part of a co-sanctioned event with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS), which was won by Hudson O'Neal. After sitting idle for many years, the track located just east of the Kansas City metro area reopened in 2021 after an extensive renovation project which included many updates to the fan experience along with removal of its former asphalt surface and a return to the dirt. Tri-City Speedway Championship Moves to Friday Night: The MLRA "Championship Weekend" will once again return on the Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL on Friday night October 11th for the crowning of the series champion. Originally scheduled as a two-night affair for Friday and Saturday, speedway officials have made the difficult decision to cancel the Saturday portion due to a family commitment which requires them to be out of state. This scheduling change will now move the Saturday purse up one day, making Friday night now worth $7,000 to win and $700 to start. This will mark the fifth consecutive season with the 3/8-mile facility playing host to the series championship. "My mom is currently residing in Florida, and due to unfortunate circumstances with her health we need to move her back to the St. Louis area to be closer to family, so we can provide additional care for her. With the incoming hurricane it is going to prevent us from safely getting to her mid-week as we had hoped," explained promotor Tammy Gundaker. "We do not want to cancel Saturdays planned finale, but we also have to do best for our family, and that means being there and helping to make this move as soon as we can get into Florida which we believe will be Saturday. We are looking forward to making Friday special for the teams and we are excited to be the finale of what looks to be a great championship battle between Chad, Chris, and Tony." The annual "Trunk or Treat" for the kids to cruise the pits and visit drivers will now be moved to Saturday, October 26th from 2 - 4 pm, and held in conjunction with the speedways B-Mod Bash. LUCAS OIL MLRA "CHAMPIONSHIP OUTLOOK" With just two nights to decide the $20,000 to win MLRA Championship, the intensity should be tight when drivers make their way into the I-70 Speedway on Thursday night. Three drivers will have a legitimate mathematical shot at taking home the title, making every single position on the track as important as ever. Chad Simpson (Points Leader): The four-time Lucas Oil MLRA Champion will enter the weekend with a 65-point advantage, as he looks to capture his third consecutive series crown. Simpson's margin stood at 160 points just six races ago, but has slowly dwindled down with pressure coming from brother Chris Simpson and Tony Jackson Jr. Of the top three drivers only, Chad Simpson competed in the MLRA's last bout at I-70 in 2022, finishing in 10th and giving himself a bit of an edge when it comes to experience on the highbanks. Simpson's championship chasing experience will likely come into play down the stretch as well. Not only is he a 20-time MLRA winner, but he also has six Corn Belt Clash Series Championships to his name. A championship for Simpson would put him in elite company, surpassing Terry Phillips (4) and joining Alan Vaughn as the only five-time MLRA champions. Only Al Purkey has more titles, as the 2024 Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductee has seven titles to his credit. He would also tie Vaughn as the only driver in series history to win three consecutive championships. Chris Simpson ( -65 points): Last year's MLRA runner-up told fans following a Labor Day weekend victory that they would be in for a treat over the remaining races, as he expected his brother and himself to put on a great battle for the championship. 24 hours later it looked like that would be all for not, as he recorded a 24th place showing after a power steering line failure. Following a 26th place run at the Davenport Speedway it looked even more unlikely, until this past weekend when he erased 135 points in three nights off what was a 200-point deficit. Two runner-up finishes and a $10,000 victory in Saturday's MLRA Fall Nationals has Chris Simpson entering the weekend as the hottest of the title contenders. Tony Jackson Jr. ( -75 points): Jackson came out of the box strong in 2024, as the only MLRA regular to secure a top five in the MLRA Spring Nationals season opener. The next three events however found Jackson with finishes outside of the top ten and in a hole. Turn the page to August, and with the help of a new Longhorn Chassis the two-time MLRA Champion has found his stride once again, finishing no worse than 9th with a series leading 5.11 average finishing position since. If it comes down to a battle on Friday at Tri City Speedway don't count out "Prime Time". Jackson has found his way to victory lane at Tri City Speedway 4 of the past 5 seasons, proving he knows his way around the 3/8-mile race track and is capable of capturing his third career MLRA Championship. SUNOCO ROOKIE OF THE YEAR- Aaron Marrant has all but wrapped up the 2024 Sunoco Rookie of The Year title, which will be made official following Friday nights feature event at Tri City. Marrant and car owners Michael and Misty Meise have collected three top tens on the season including a 6th place at Lakeside Speedway. Thursday night will serve as another home game for Marrant, who lives just about 30 minutes from I-70. (Oct. 6, 2024) - When Kubota High Limit Racing returns to Lucas Oil Speedway on Wednesday for the Diamond Classic makeup race, fans can get an upgrade to a pit pass by helping those affected by Hurricane Helene. Kubota High Limit Racing, along with Speedway Children's Charities, Texas Motor Speedway, I-70 Speedway and Lucas Oil Speedway are joining forces to gather items for hurricane relief efforts in the southeastern United States. While originally a diaper and baby wipes-focused drive, recent news from the affected area has shown an urgent need for blankets as temperatures are dropping this time of the year. Fans who donate new blankets and/or unopened diapers of any size and baby wipes will get one free pit pass upgrade per item at the track where the donation is made on that race night. Cash donations will also be accepted. Lucas Oil Speedway donations will be collected at the VIP Door of the ticket booth starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday.   Chris Simpson earns MLRA Fall Nationals feature as Peyton Taylor bags Super Stocks Big Buck 50 triumph

  WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 5, 2024) - Chris Simpson's weekend of settling for second-best at the Lucas Oil MLRA Fall Nationals took a positive turn as the veteran Iowa driver found his way to victory lane Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Simpson wrested the lead away from his older brother and MLRA points leader Chris Simpson on lap 19. He held it the rest of the way and went on to claim his second series victory of the season and second career MLRA victory at Lucas Oil Speedway. It was worth $10,000 as the co-headliner with the 8th annual Super Stocks Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt. The return of the Big Buck 50 after a four-year break saw a familiar winner. Peyton Taylor of Batesville, Ark., grabbed the $10,000 victory to go with his Big Buck victories in 2019 and 2020. He took command on lap 15 and led the rest of the way. Taylor also earned a spot in the sold-out Whitetail Trophy Hunt next month in mid-Missouri, which pays $15,000 to win. Chris Simpson capped a weekend of perseverance after finishing runner-up to Ryan Gustin two nights in a row. He said a poor qualifying performance left him displeased and with a lot of work to do, starting the final-nigh feature in eighth. "We love coming here," Simpson said. "I just have to thank all my guys. It's a good way to end it. We've been working hard all year. "I'm missing my daughter's homecoming tonight, but at least I'm bringing 10 grand home," Simpson added. Chad Simpson led in the early going, with a 1.7-second margin by lap 10 over Dustin Hodges and eighth-starting Chris Simpson. Chad Simpson caught lapped traffic by lap 14 and Chris Simpson closed in on his back bumper with Scott third and Tony Jackson Jr. fourth. The first and what would be the only lead change came on lap 19 as Chris Simpson, charging from eighth at the start, took over the top spot coming off turn four. Chris Simpson's lead was 1.2 seconds over Scott when the race's lone caution flew on lap 30 as Gustin - the feature winner the previous two nights - slowed on the front stretch while running 10th. "I don't know what happened to Ryan," Chris Simpson said. "I figured if he finished, he's probably in the top three. It would have been fun to battle it out with him. We both were good all weekend, but to top it off with the $10,000, I'll take it." With a clear track ahead, Chris Simpson took off after the restart to a one-second lead lead over Scott with Chad Simpson another two seconds behind the top duo. Scott rallied to within a half-second with seven to go, with Jackson moving into third. As the race closed under a long green-flag run, Simpson held on and beat Scott by one second. "We feel like we have qualifying figured out, we're trying now what we need on these new cars when the race track dries out on a longer race," Scott said. "Congrats to Chris and them. Hopefully we can come do this agan and get into victory lane." Jackson wound up third with Urbana's Dillon McCowan fourth after starting 16th. Chad Simpson, after leading the first 18 laps, settled for fifth. "We had a good car all weekend, I just can't qualify well here for whatever reason," Jackson said. "A good race track and a fun race track and we had a really good race car." Jackson made some gains in the MLRA championship chase by finishing two spots ahead of Chad Simpson. Jackson now trails Simpson by 75, with Chris Simpson 65 behind his brother, as three series races remain. Hodges set the fast qualifying time with a 14.479-second lap to lead Group A. That was near the track record of 14.443 set by Garrett Alberson on May 23, 2024 on Night 1 of the Lucas Oil Show-Me 100 weekend. Taylor earns another Big Buck 50: A four-year break in between renditions of the Super Stocks Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt didn't alter who went to victory lane, but the route to get there was unique. Peyton Taylor, who won the race in 2019 and 2020, had to use a provisional to get into the field. He drove from 25th and last to start all the way to the lead well before the halfway mark of the 50-lapper. Taylor took command from Terry Schultz on lap 15 and, driving a car borrowed from Jared Neiswander after Taylor's car was plagued by motor issues on both preliminary nights, was never seriously threatened the rest of the way. "To go back to back to back, it's pretty surreal," Taylor said. "Thank you all for bringing this back. This is a special event for a lot of us grassroots racers and I think everybody here had a fun time. "Jared is one of my good buddies and he said, 'man, I ain't racing it, you're racing it.' Thanks to him, his dad, his family and all these great sponsors on this car." Pole-starting Gary Clark led the first three laps before fellow front-row starter Schultz grabbed the top spot on lap four. Tosh moved into second on lap five as Schultz led by 1.6 seconds. Schultz, winner of the inaugural Big Buck 50 in 2014, had a 1.65-second lead over Tosh when action was slowed by a caution on lap nine as Colton Bourland's car caught fire under the rear end. After the restart, Schultz rolled to a 2.3-second lead by lap 14, when another caution flew. But the big news at that point was Taylor's charge from 25th to third. Taylor needed only one more lap to complete his last-to-first run, taking over the lead on lap 15 as Schultz slid all the way back to fourth. As the race continued into its longest green-flag run, Taylor's lead was 2.2 seconds by lap 40 with Tony Anglin running behind J.T. Carroll. As the laps dwindled, Taylor's lead started to shrink until Carroll got hung up in lapped traffic. That helped Taylor increase his margin to 4.7 seconds with two remaining. But the comfortable drive to the checkers became a bit more dramatic when a caution flew just before the white flag was ready to appear. "I talked to God on about every caution, but we had a couple of good conversations on that last yellow," Taylor said. "I've got to give all the glory to God. We're all blessed beyond what we're worth and I can't give enough glory to Him." It didn't matter as Taylor had a flawless restart and went on to finish clear of Carroll by 1.7 seconds. Carroll was disqualified in post-race technical inspection, elevating Derek Brown to second. Anglin was third with Josh Jones fourth and Richie Tosh fifth.   CHRIS SIMPSON ROLLS TO $10,000 VICTORY IN MLRA FALL NATIONALS FINALE

  Wheatland, MO (October 5, 2024) - After playing the role of bridesmaid the prior two nights, Chris Simpson proved to be the man to beat on Saturday night in winning the $10,000 finale of the 2024 MLRA "Fall Nationals" at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. The Oxford, IA driver was buried deep in the field following MyRacePass qualifying, but managed to race from fifth to the runner up position in his heat race, good enough to put him into the 8th starting position for the feature. Dustin Hodges grabbed his second MRP Fast Time award of the season and started from the pole, alongside of Stormy Scott for the 50 lap feature event. On the initial start, Scott jumped before entering the Nutrien Ag Solutions Start Zone, resulting in a one row penalty that moved point leader Chad Simpson to the outside front row. Chad Simpson would capitalize, and took control on the opening lap with Hodges in tow. By lap 12 Chad Simpson had to begin working his way through lapped traffic, all the while Chris Simpson was methodically working his way toward the front along the low line. The brotherly battle would heat up with Chris making his way into second on lap 11 setting up a battle between them as they navigated lapped traffic. Chris Simpson made the Swift Springs Move of the race on lap 18 when he charged to the inside of Chad Simpson and took the lead exiting turn four. The lone caution of the night waved on lap 30, when Ryan Gustin slowed on the front stretch. Gustin would exit the track under his own power, retiring from the main event where he would be scored in 20th in the final run down after winning the first two nights of the Fall Nationals. After dropping to as low as 6th on lap 12, Stormy Scott was the only driver in the closing laps to apply pressure to the back bumper of Chris Simpson. After restarting in second, Scott was able to close to within a couple of car lengths in the closing laps, but Chris Simpson would go on to capture his second MLRA win of the season by 1.008 seconds over Scott. Tony Jackson Jr. grabbed his first podium finish of the weekend with a third-place run, ahead of Dillon McCowan and Chad Simpson. "If you would have told me that (being unbeatable) after we qualified, I would say you were nuts, we timed really bad." "This was a good way to end it," Simpson said of his weekend. "We have been working hard all year and had speed, just kind of stupid stuff happened like last time we were here, we broke the power steering line during our warm up lap and kind of ruined our points deal." Chad Simpson now holds a 65-point advantage heading into the final three races of the season, while Chris Simpson moves to second after entering the weekend with a 200 point deficit. Tony Jackson Jr. also made-up ground, after entering the weekend 100 points behind Chad Simpson he now rests just 75 points from a third career MLRA championship. Scott's runner up was his second top five finish of the weekend, finishing no worse than 7th in the three night affair. "We feel like we have qualifying figured out, we're just trying to work on figuring out what we need on these new cars for when the race track starts to dry out and in these longer races. We were definitely better tonight, there was more moisture in it for sure but I think we found some gains. Hopefully we can come do this again and put it in victory lane." Jackson's podium run marked his 9th top five finish of the season. "We had a good car all weekend, I just can't qualify here for whatever reason.   WHEATLAND, MO. (Sept. 30, 2024) - The last, big multi-night program of the 2024 season at Lucas Oil Speedway arrives this Thursday through Saturday with stars of Late Model and Super Stock racing joining forces in south-central Missouri. The 8th annual MLRA Fall Nationals kicks off a sprint toward determining a season champion with full programs set for Thursday and Friday, paying $5,000-to-win the features, and $10,000 awaiting the winner of the finale on Saturday. Meanwhile, the 8th annual Super Stocks Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt returns to Lucas Oil Speedway for the first time since 2020. The full-fender division also will reward the Saturday-night feature winner with a $10,000 check. "It's a big weekend with the MLRA Late Models and Super Stocks coming together one the same nights," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said, noting that the Late Models full program on Thursday having originally been a test and tune night for the MLRA Series. But after the series was hit by so many rainouts during the first half of the schedule, Lorton and MLRA Series Director Ernie Leftwich added the Thursday action to give drivers an extra opportunity to earn points toward the championship. The best news is there is little or no chance for rain this week. Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, will be looking to move closer to his third straight MLRA championship. He brings a 100-point lead over Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon into the Fall Nationals. Jackson and Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, captured feature wins at the MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial in Wheatland one month ago. Three MLRA races will remain following this weekend - Oct. 10 at I-70 Speedway and Oct. 11-12 at Tri-City Speedway. Meanwhile, there has been much anticipation about the return of the Big Buck 50, which will kick off with practice sessions Thursday along with time trial qualifying for their Friday heat and dash races for their Saturday $10,000-to-win finale. Super Stock pre-tech will open at noon Thursday and Friday. All Super Stocks must go through pre-tech before Friday heat races begin. A star-studded field of Super Stocks is expected for the event with Whitetail Trophy owner Craig Danuser stepping up as the title sponsor as he was in previous renditions of the event. This year marks the 36th anniversary of the Whitetail Trophy Hunt at Lake of the Ozarks. The sold-out dates are Nov. 16-18. Entries are received on a first come, first served basis and limited to a maximum of 220 hunters. Over $5 million in cash and prizes has been awarded over the years to many fortunate whitetail hunters. Plus, the five year Show-me Showdown is in its fifth year for the 2024 hunt. With nine points events still on the schedule, it leaves ½ of the championship points battle yet to come over the next 7 weekends. "MLRA Fall Nationals": Lucas Oil Speedway The first change comes in the form of an additional race night for drivers and fans on Thursday, October 3rd at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. This night was originally set as an "Open Practice" session to kick off the Annual "MLRA Fall Nationals", but series and Track officials have agreed to transform this date into a full racing program featuring a $5,000 to win 30-lap main event that will be a full championship points night. The Thursday night event will go along with a full $5,000 to win show at the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks" on Friday night October 4th, before culminating the weekend on Saturday night the 5th with a $10,000 to win MLRA weekend finale.
