- Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Darren Phillips looks to make final racing season a memorable one
WHEATLAND, MO. (June 12, 2024) - Darren Phillips has enjoyed a 27-year racing career on area dirt tracks, driving in a variety of divisions along the way. His top goal always has been to enjoy the ride, with his family. It all began when Phillips got to race with his brother, Darrell Rife in 4-cylinders at Nevada Speedway, and has evolved to racing with his 23-year-old son Dalton Phillips. But Darren's time behind the wheel is starting to wind down. Phillips announced earlier this year that the 2024 racing season would be his last. He's doing so by realizing a long-time dream of driving a Late Model and Phillips is having a solid season, currently eighth in the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Model points chase at Lucas Oil Speedway. "Last year we went out and played around on the boat, did a bunch of other stuff with family, and had fun with it," Phillips said. "It's time to find something else to do. I've enjoyed my racing career a lot. I've met a lot of my closest friends racing. "About everywhere you go you're going to meet somebody or run into somebody you know. You're gonna run into some people you have hard feelings with. But the next time, they might become some of your closest friends. I've had a few of those." Phillips, 46, is looking forward to Saturday night's doubleheader at his hometown track in Wheatland. Along with the Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series Midseason Championships, the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models will run their makeup feature from a May 25th rainout. That $2,000-to-win race will lead off the program. Phillips has been a familiar face on area speedways, going back to the opening of the original Wheatland Raceway in the early 2000s. Phillips drove Factory Stocks in those days and has spent time in Modifieds, B-Mods, Mod Lites and USRA Stock Cars before finally taking a shot at Late Models midway through last season. "That was my dream since I was a little kid," Phillips said, recalling how he grew up watching MLRA Late Model standouts like Alan Vaughan and David Turner race at Nevada. "I loved watching all those guys and my dream was to run a Late Model. I knew I couldn't afford it … I still can't afford it, but I do what I can. "When I had a chance to get into first Late Model I bought last year, I had a blast." Phillips traded his USRA Stock Car for a Late Model this season has said it's "been a fun time" as he's adjusted to car. "We started out the year a little rocky trying to learn the new car," he said. "I think I've got it working pretty good now. I've had a few good runs the last little bit. I'm looking forward to this weekend after the last three weekends when I've run pretty strong." Included were a pair of ninth-place feature runs at Lucas Oil Speedway and a fifth at Central Missouri Speedway. He's eighth in Lucas Oil Speedway points, putting him within realistic range of achieving one of his goals. "I would like to finish top five at Lucas for points and finish top 10, if not the top five, in (POWRi) national points," he said. "Those are the biggest goals to end my career." The 2021 USRA Stock Cars Central Region champion and 2023 Bolivar Speedway champ in USRA Stock Cars said he has a lot of people to thank for supporting his racing career. Topping the list are his significant other, Bobbi Lehman, and five children. The family serves as his crew on race nights. "I just want to thank everybody that's helped me and thank all my kids for being there and helping me and thank my wife for sticking with me," Phillips said. "My kids have been with me 100 percent. I've enjoyed doing this with my kids." The Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series Midseason Championship is Presented by the Bolivar Herald-Free Press. Look for discount coupons to Saturday's action in The Bolivar Herald-Free Press. Action will get underway with the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models running their 30-lap makeup feature from a rainout on the final night of the Show-Me 100. The $2,000-to-win feature, using the lineup that was set to run on May 25th, will follow hot laps the regular racing program will get underway after the makeup race. Midseason champions will be crowned in all four weekly divisions - the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds, O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA B-Mods, Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods and POWRi Late Models. POWRi Super Stocks have been added as a special guest class with a $500-to-win feature. This Saturday's regularly-scheduled Late Model feature also marks the beginning of a "bounty" on Late Model points leader and defending track champion Justin Wells. The bounty will start at $500 to any driver able to beat Wells and each week that the bounty doesn't get claimed, $100 will be added - June 22nd ($600), July 4th ($700), July 20th ($800) and July 27th ($900). If no one claims the bounty in the five-week hunt, then Wells will receive the $900 bounty money plus an extra $100 to make it an even $1,000. The bounty has to be earned legally, with the driver's car passing tech 100 percent and Wells has to have finished the race for it to be claimed. - Lucas Oil Speedway takes this weekend off with action set to resume June 8th; POWRi Late Model makeup June 15th
WHEATLAND, MO. (May 28, 2024) - Following a busy Show-Me 100 weekend, Lucas Oil Speedway will take this weekend off before resuming the Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series on June 8th with a scheduling change. To work with other area tracks and sanctioning bodies to help support car counts, the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models will not be on the June 8th schedule. The Lucas Oil MLRA is racing that night at Springfield Raceway and Lake Ozark Speedway has a Cash Money Series event that night. "Those Late Model drivers who race with us weekly can attend those events can attend one of those events and support them also," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said. Lorton also announced that Mod Lites will be added to the June 8th event as a guest class, racing for $500 to win and $75 to start. The Clear Creek Golf Car USRA B-Mods will be the featured class that evening, running a 25-lap, $750-to-win main event. The Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds and O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars also will be in action. That will be a busy weekend at the speedway as it also marks the first appearance this season for the Kentucky Drag Boat Association on Lake Lucas. The KDBA Summer Thunder on Lake Lucas will be in action both June 8-9. Check out kydragboat.com for more on the series. POWRi Late Model makeup and Wells bounty: The Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models will return on June 15th and make up their rained out special from the Show-Me 100. The feature will run prior to the start of the regular racing program, going 30 laps for $2,000 to win. That evening's regular program also will be the first "bounty" on reigning track champion Justin Wells, who is 5-for-5 in POWRi Late Model features this season after winning 11 times in 2023. Lorton said the bounty will start at $500 to any drivrer able to beat Wells. Each week that the bounty doesn't get claimed, $100 will be added - June 15th ($500), June 22nd ($600), July 4th ($700), July 20th ($800) and July 27th ($900). "If no one claims the bounty in the five-week hunt, then Wells will receive the $900 bounty money which we will top it off with a extra $100 to make it a even $1,000 if he can outrun the bounty hunters," Lorton said. "These four races, the bounty has to be earned legally, the driver's car has to pass tech 100%, Justin has to have finished the race for it to be claimed. There also are some other schedule changes for the remainder of the season: Full Fender Challenge coming Aug. 17: With Central Missouri Speedway and I-70 Speedway both having Super Stock specials on July 27th, Lucas Oil Speedway will not run Super Stocks that night as they were added as a guest class. On Aug. 17th, along with POWRi Summer Thunder 410 Sprints and 305s plus the POWRi Super Stocks, the USRA Stock Cars have been added to this event for what is being called the "Super Stocks vs Stock Cars Full Fender Challenge." POWRi super stocks will race for $1,500 to win, $150 to start feature with $100 entry fee. USRA Stock Cars will race for $1,500 to win, $150 to start feature with $100 entry fee. Then the top 12 from the Super Stock feature and top 12 from the Stock Cars feature will enter into a Super Stock vs Stock Car Full Fender Challenge race for $1,500 to win, $150 to start. The top 12 from each feature will draw for their starting spots in the Full Fender Challenge Race. POWRi Super Stocks will earn POWRi National points for their feature and USRA Stock Cars will earn their sanctioning series points, and track points for their individual feature. No points will be awarded for the Stock Car vs Super Stock Full Fender Challenge. "It's all for fun, glory and payout money," Lorton said. - Pospisil Charges late to win West Series Opener at Warrensburg
Tad Pospisil opened his Malvern Bank Super Late Models West Series title defense with a hard-fought win in Saturday's main event at Central Missouri Speedway. The high-banked 3/8 mile oval in Warrensburg, Missouri was the sight of the 2024 season opener for the Malvern Bank West Series. The night saw three new faces to the series as 16-year-old Tyler Kuykendall, Andy Bryant and Jimmy Dowell all made their debuts with the tour. They and 21 others packed the pit area for a chance to win the inaugural Cliff Harris Memorial. Defending East Series Champion, Chad Holladay, was also in attendance. The Muscatine, Iowa native started the night off right as he set the fastest time in qualifying time trials with a 14.355 second lap. Meanwhile, Nebraska drivers swept the heat race wins as Jake Bridge, Tad Pospisil and Brian Kosiski were all victorious. After passing and finishing points were calculated, it was Iowa's JC Wyman sitting on pole position for the 25-lap main event with Brian Kosiski to his outside. Wyman jumped out to the early lead and showed the way out in front going into the first two cautions of the race. The first yellow flag flew for debris in turn one on lap six. Two laps later, the second caution came out for a spin in turn four. From there, Wyman continued to lead while Pospisil and Jesse Sobbing worked their ways to the last two podium spots. Holladay, meanwhile, was locked into a tight battle for fourth against 2023 West Series Rookie of the Year, Dylan Sillman. The turning point of the race happened with only eight laps to go as Wyman hugged the bottom lane defending the lane from Pospisil. Wyman hit one of the infield tractor tires as he exited turn four and then caught another going into turn one. The contact caused the left side of his car's nose to fold under the left front tire causing a loss in speed and traction. Wyman fought valiantly to keep the lead from Pospisil, but the West Series Champion found his way to the lead as the two came off turn four coming to just three laps to go. The pass was completed just before the caution came out for a car that went over the edge of the track. The 3-lap dash to the finish saw Pospisil break out to a safe distance while the remainder of the top five spots were up for grabs. Pospisil ran out the final three circuits, and the Norfolk, Nebraska driver picked up his 39th career win with the Malvern Bank Series. His win also makes him the fifth different winner in five races at Central Missouri Speedway and snapped a 25-race drought. Holladay narrowly edged out Wyman for second while Wyman brought it home third. Andrew Kosiski made a big charge late to finish fourth after starting 11th, and Jesse Sobbing rounded out the top five. With Warrensburg settled, the Malvern Bank East Series picks back up with a huge Memorial Day Weekend tripleheader. May 24-26, the tour will make stops at Davenport, Maquoketa and Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedways. As for the West Series, rounds 2 and 3 take the tour to Nebraska on May 31st and June 1st. On the 31st, the tour visits the Beatrice Speedway in Beatrice and follows that up with the first of 2 visits to Norfolk, Nebraska's Off-Road Speedway.
- "SHUGAH'" SHANE SEXTON BACK ON TRACK TONIGHT AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Warner Springs, CA, April 27, 2024) In a late development, Warner Springs, California sprint car driver "Shugah" Shane Sexton has announced that he will be among the entries when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars visit Perris Auto Speedway tonight, April 27th. Spectator gates to see Sexton and the remainder of the USAC/CRA drivers in action will open at 5:00 p.m. and racing will start at 7:00. Sexton has appeared at the first two races of the year at Perris. However, engine issues knocked him out of both. He was hoping to have his gorgeous GAS Chassis house car back for tonight's race, but they are still waiting for the engine to be done. Thus, he contacted Kenny Perkins and will be in one of the Perkins Motorsports entries tonight. "I just responded to his Facebook story," Sexton said. "We worked out a couple of things. It kind of went from having to pay some money, to us going to make some repairs to another chassis he has, to make it all worth it. It is a Maxim Chassis with a 360 engine. My first car, the red car I debuted in my first ever sprint car start at Kern in 2021 was a Maxim." "The pistons should be here this week, so it should be ready a couple of weeks after that," the personable driver related about his own engine. "We are shooting for the Salute to Indy race at Perris in May." Sexton, who is anxious to get back on the battlefield tonight, is not worried about being rusty. "I think I have a total of 16 laps this year," the young racer lamented. "I am ready to jump back into it. I try not to think about it (not having many laps since last year). If you do think about it too much, that is when you start messing up. So as long as I do not think about it and get in it, I can do my thing and try to make some stuff happen." Also on the horizon for Sexton is a return to Brian Fonseca's lightning sprint cars for one of the upcoming national races. In 2022, Sexton dazzled when he wheeled one of Fonseca's Savage Racing entries to a win at one of the preliminaries for the Dirt Cup in Deming, Washington, a second place in the Friday night program at the Central Missouri Speedway and a third on night two of the Hangtown 100 at Placerville. "I am doing a national with Brian, but we do not know where yet," Sexton said while prepping for tonight's race. "It will be in Washington, Missouri, or MinKota. Who knows? I always have my bag packed for him, so I am excited." Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00 tonight at Perris. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing action and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, we will have plenty available at the ticket window on Saturday. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. The GAS Chassis Company is sponsoring the Perris Auto Speedway Young Gun Sprint Car Series in 2024. It will reward the champion with a brand-new GAS Chassis at season's end. For more information or to order a GAS Sprint Car Chassis, call Stan Sexton at (619) 252-7686 or visit the GAS Chassis Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61556527387746. Sexton and the #74 team wish to extend their thanks to the following 2022 racing season partners. Gas Chassis, MPRE, Reel Technologies, Keys Brothers Racing, Sexton Fire Protection, Elite Powder Coating, Bill's Jerky, Hot Dog Kustoms, Savage Racing, AG Sandcars, and Ron's Tire and Brake. If you would like to be a part of this fun, upcoming team and gain exposure in 2024, please contact Shane Sexton at mailto:Shanesexton7@gmail.com or (619) 362-5921.
