Muskingum County Speedway Dirt Track News
- Moran Defends Home Turf with Muskingum County Triumph
ZANESVILLE, Ohio (July 6, 2024) - Hometown driver Devin Moran thrilled the capacity crowd on Saturday night at Muskingum County Speedway - leading all the way to win the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Freedom 60 worth $20,000. Moran's win was his fourth of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season, but his first series win since 2013 at the track promoted by his father, Hall-of-Famer Donnie Moran and his family. Ricky Thornton Jr. came from fifth to finish second as he trailed Moran by 3.185 seconds at the finish. Max Blair was third followed by Jonathan Davenport and Matt Cosner. The stats will show that Moran led all 60 laps, but three different drivers took their best shot at him during the race with Tim McCreadie, Tyler Carpenter, and Thornton all holding the runner-up spot at some point. McCreadie, who started alongside on the front row held the second spot for the first nine laps of the race until Carpenter got going on the top and moved past McCreadie on lap ten. Carpenter was able to keep Moran in his sights until a lap 30 restart when McCreadie and Thornton got by him. McCreadie, looking for his first win in the Rocket1 House Car, yielded the second spot to Thornton on lap 41 as Blair joined the party and he began to put the pressure on Thornton for second. With no caution flags in the last 25 laps, Moran had to navigate heavy traffic that allowed Thornton and Blair to close briefly, but Moran would ultimately pull away. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 12th time in his career, the racer who scored his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win at the same track 11 years ago, climbed from his #99 to the cheers from the massive crowd on hand to witness the event that carried an $80,000 feature purse. "Man, this is just awesome. All the glory to God and these great race fans. I love coming here! We only get to come here once or twice a year. It was an awesome night and I'm glad to be back in victory lane with the Lucas Oil guys. It took a while to get around those guys in the back. Our car was so good. I just want to give my car owner, Roger Sellers, a huge shoutout as he drove all the way up from Tennessee to be here tonight. Thanks to my dad, my mom and my whole family they put on a great event tonight." Thornton came home in second and will maintain the series points lead heading to Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri next week. "I needed to win the heat race to be able to stand where Devin is tonight. I felt like I was pretty decent there. It's tough to start fifth and pass here. It was so top dominant there forever. I just never got myself in a good enough position and then I got a couple of lucky restarts there and I thought I could run him [Moran] down and the lapped cars were racing harder than I was for the lead. It was one of those deals, we'll take second and head on down the road." For the second year in a row, at Muskingum County, Blair rounded out the Big River Steel Podium with his third-place finish. "This track races like Eriez, Pa and like a lot of tracks back home. I am much more familiar and comfortable with tracks like this. That was a lot of fun. I thought I was going to have Ricky there for a long time, I think we raced about 20 laps side-by-side and we never touched. This crowd was awesome tonight especially on the Fourth of July weekend, because it's tough, there is so much racing going on everywhere so for the crowd to be this good that is pretty cool." The winner's Roger Sellers-owned, Double Down Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, C&W Trucking, Lazydays RV, McHugh Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram, CarSourceAuto.com, Bilstein Shocks, Red Oak Pub, Smoky Mountain Speedway, Lincoln Smith Racing, Pee Wee's Wrecker Service, and Haulin' Haskell's. Completing the top ten were Tim McCreadie, Tyler Carpenter, Spencer Hughes, Daulton Wilson, and Hudson O'Neal. - Sams puts exclamation point on Ohio Sprint Speedweek with $10k Atomic win
CHILLICOTHE, Oh. - Danny Sams III put a huge exclamation point on his 42nd Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek ending, leading all 35 laps for a $10,000 pay day at Atomic Speedway Saturday, the biggest win of his young racing career. It was Sam's third win during the nine straight nights of racing across the Buckeye State under the Ti-22 Performance FAST On Dirt banner, having also posted wins at Hilltop Speedway and Muskingum County Speedway earlier. "WOW to say the least. We came into this week just hoping we would make it to every night. My parents and I worked so hard this week and…wow, what a reward. I'm not sure what I think but WOW! This is everything and more we could ask for. This car has ran so good all week. I'm so blessed to be in this position and have an amazing car owner like Rocky. Thank you to everyone that makes this possible and all glory to God," said Sams beside his RV Locks & More. Dirt Crowd.com, Schaeffer's Oil, Shop D3.com #24D. While Sams, from North Port, Fla., celebrated the victory, Republic, Ohio's Cap Henry scored another podium finish, right behind Sams, "to lock up the 2024 Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship. Henry only finished out of the top five once in the eight contested A-mains during speedweek, a 17th place run Monday at Wayne County Speedway after being involved in an incident during his heat race. He scored wins at Attica Raceway Park to open speedweek, and another to re-open Millstream Speedway Friday. "Our nose wing fell down there so we had nothing for Danny. He's been fast all week. I'm happy with what we accomplished to pull off the Ohio Speedweek championship…it's something I always wanted to do. I'm just super happy for Zack and Jeff and Gary and Chris and Chad…everyone involved in this deal…Erin and Dana. It means a lot to do this. I know it's not the All Star deal any more but it's still means something to win an Ohio Speedweek championship," said Henry of his Premier Planning Service, Jeff Ward Demolition, Ohio Logistics, Primal Tee Shop, Elliott's Custom Trailers and Carts, FK Rod Ends, Griff's Engines; At the drop of the green Sams, who set fast time during qualifications - the fourth time he accomplished that during the week - bolted into the lead with Henry, Cole Duncan and Skylar Gee in tow. Two quick cautions on laps three and four kept the field close, but once the green flew the race settled into a long green flag run. Sams built up a huge lead before hitting lapped traffic on lap 12 of the 35-lap affair. Henry closed slightly while a tremendous battle ensued for third involving Duncan, Gee and a charging Greg Wilson. At the half-way point Henry was right on the rear bumper of Sams who was having issues with a pair of lapped cars racing side by side right in front of him. Sams executed a great move on lap 29 to finally get by the two lapped cars and pulled away until the final caution flew on lap 31. Sams blasted the top side of Atomic on the restart and pulled away for the win over Henry, Gee, Wilson (from 11th) and Duncan. The Ti-22 Performance FAST On Dirt Series thanks all the tracks and their staff, the race teams and fans for their tremendous support for a very successful 42nd Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek. - Henry scores 2nd Ohio Speedweek win at grand reopening of Millstream
FINDLAY, Ohio - Consistency wins championships and Cap Henry is demonstrating that adage perfectly during the 42nd Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek with the Ti-22 Performance FAST On Dirt Series. The Bellevue, Ohio driver scored his second win of speedweek Friday at the grand re-opening of Millstream Speedway in Findlay, Ohio in front of a huge crowd there to celebrate the return of racing after sitting idle for eight years. Going into the ninth and final night of Ohio Sprint Speedweek, Henry, who is only one of two drivers - the other being Greg Wilson - to have made all seven contested speedweek A-mains during, has a commanding lead in his bid to become the speedweek champion. Henry opened speedweek with a win at Attica Raceway Park where he is the defending track champion. He followed with a third place finish at Waynesfield Motorsports Park on Sunday before a heat race incident which placed him at the rear of the field for the feature Monday at Wayne County Speedway where he finished 17th. Henry roared back Tuesday with a third place run at Hilltop Speedway followed by a fifth place finish at Sharon Speedway Wednesday and a second place showing Thursday at Muskingum County Speedway Thursday. Friday at Millstream, Scotty Thiel grabbed the early lead in the 30-lap feature with Henry driving from fourth to second on the opening lap. Henry drove under Thiel for the lead on lap nine just as a caution flew for debris. Henry built up a substantial lead while the battle for second saw Zane DeVault get around Thiel on lap 12. A debris caution on lap 20 wiped out Henry's lead, but he executed a perfect restart to once again drive away. With five laps to go Henry held a 2.1 second lead over DeVault with ninth starter Skylar Gee moving into third after a spirited battle with Thiel and Cale Thomas. A yellow flag on the final lap set up a shootout but Henry once again nailed his restart and drove to the victory, his fourth overall win of 2024. DeVault, Gee, Thiel and 12th starter Joel Myers Jr. rounded out the top five. "I'm just so proud of my guys, Zack, Jeff, Gary, Chris and Chad, the way they've turned this season around means a lot. It truly is a team effort. To win in front of that big of a crowd is so cool. I wanted to just be patient and make sure we got good points, but I always want to win too. Years ago when the All Stars came here I was leading one and got taken out by another guy and lost it. This is the type of race track we kind of struggled at this week. I knew it was important to get out front and every one of those cautions was a big deal to keep us in clean air. It was really hard to see in traffic," said Henry beside his Premier Planning Service, Jeff Ward Demolition, Ohio Logistics, Primal Tee Shop, Elliott's Custom Trailers and Carts, FK Rod Ends, Griff's Engines backed #33W. - Sams becomes first repeat winner during Ohio Sprint Speedweek
DRESDEN, Oh. - Danny Sams III became the first repeat winner during the Ti-22 Performance FAST On Dirt 42nd Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek Thursday, June 13, in a very thrilling 30-lap feature. Just like two days prior at Hilltop Speedway where he scored the win, Sams utilized the high line to retake the lead with just two laps to go to score the $5,000 pay day at Muskingum County Speedway. Sams, from North Port, Florida, bolted out to the lead at the drop of the green with Connor Morrell, Cale Thomas, Travis Philo and Cap Henry in tow. Thomas slid into second on lap four and started to narrow the gap to Sams before a caution flew on lap nine. With clean air Sams pulled away from Thomas as Henry began to close on the lead duo. At the half-way point Sams' lead was nearly two seconds as he prepared to enter heavy lapped traffic. Thomas and sixth starter Henry closed quickly and Thomas slid into the lead on lap 19 but Sams fought back to regain the top spot two laps later with six laps to go the crowd were on their feet for a tremendous three car battle for the lead with Henry getting a two for one move to take the top spot on lap 25 just before the caution flew. On the restart Sams immediately jumped to Henry's outside and applied pressure edging in front once again on lap 28. Sams blasted the cushion the final two laps to score the win over Henry, Thomas, Philo and Zane DeVault. "I was doing my best Haudenschild impression out there. That caution came out….lapped cars are just so tough tonight…I was like I'm not giving up yet. I waited all the way down the back stretch to go to the high side….made the right move when it counted. I can't thank my mom and dad enough, Rocky…we've been up all day chancing engines…we're wore out. This will give us a good boost. This win is even bigger than Tuesday because I had to race for this one. I can't believe we're even here right now. We didn't even make the show last night…didn't even get close. Just the rebound these guys have is just absolutely incredible. All glory to God," said Sams beside his RV Locks & More, Dirt Crowd.com, Schaeffer's Oil, Shop D3.com backed #24D. A second place run pads Henry's lead for the coveted Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship. "I knew where he (Sams) was going on that restart. He's been killing the top all week. I hadn't run up there all day. I knew I had to go up there but the bottom was working. I'll take this and have a good point night," said Henry of his Jeff Ward Motorsports backed sprint car. The 42nd Ohio Sprint Speedweek resumes Friday, June 14 at the recently re-opened Millstream Speedway near Findlay, Ohio before wrapping up at Atomic Speedway near Chillicothe, Ohio Saturday for a big $10,000 to win finale. - Dietrich turns Ohio Sprint Speedweek around with Sharon victory
HARTFORD, Ohio - To say Danny Dietrich wasn't enjoying the 42nd Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek is a huge understatement. The Gettysburg, Pennsylvania resident missed the feature the first two nights, came a very close second the third, crashed the fourth night, took the fifth night to regroup, and came back strong Wednesday at Sharon Speedway, leading all 30 caution-free laps for the $5,000 victory. Dietrich became the fifth different winner in five nights during the Ti-22 Performance FAST On Dirt Series sanctioned event. It was his second career victory at Sharon. Local favorite Dale Blaney charged from sixth to second with Brandon Spithaler, Dave Blaney (from 10th) and current speedweek point leader Cap Henry rounding out the top five. "I just felt that consistent laps and no mistakes were the key to staying out front. I really didn't feel that pounding the fence down was a smart way to try and race. Moving around and keeping an eye on racing grooves was very important. I love Sharon and I love coming to Ohio speedweek. This has been a tough so this is a really feel good moment for our race team. It's tough with 50 cars every night," said Dietrich beside his Weikert's Livestock, Derek Snyder Self-made Racing, RV 4WD & Performance, York Excavating, Sandoes Fruit Market backed #48.
