Bloomsburg Fair Raceway Dirt Track News
- Steve Buckwalter scores All-Pro SpeedSTR win in Bloomsburg Fair Raceway Opener; Carter Crooker takes victory in Dirt Mods
(Bloomsburg, PA 4-20-23): Bloomsburg Fair Raceway kicked off its 2023 season on Thursday evening with picture perfect weather, a well-groomed race surface prepared by new promoter Rich Tobias and a visit by local racing star and Grand Marshall Jimmy Spencer of nearby Berwick and the result was a smoothly run and competitive program that was in the books in just under two-and-a-half hours. Afterwards the drivers where very complimentary of the track and Tobias for his great effort put in and giving them a racy surface for which to compete on. Steve Buckwalter of Royersford claimed the headline All-Pro SpeedSTR win, Carter Crooker of Savona, NY picked up the verdict with the 602 Crate Modifieds, Adam Campbell from Danville won in the FWD 4-Cylinder Stocks and Andrew Turpin of Saylorsburg took the win with the Slingshots. In the 25-lap SpeedSTR main pole sitter Buckwalter jumped into the opening lap lead over Mark Manieri and Briggs Danner. By the third tour Danner moved up to second and continued to keep close tabs on Buckwalter the rest of the way. However, try as Danner may, Buckwalter showed good muscle each time a challenge was mounted, most noticeably on restarts and was able to maintain the lead to the finish for his first win at Bloomsburg. "This feels great, we tried this here twice before, the first time we blew up in hot laps and the second race we came to it was pretty much the same deal so this was very rewarding to win the opener here at Bloomsburg," said Buckwalter. "The track was really good and I'm probably one of the biggest critics there is and I have to give Richie (Tobias) credit. He put the effort into it and gave us a really good track." Although Buckwalter had the ability to stay a few car lengths ahead of Danner, he still knew he had to keep his guard up nonetheless against the three-time Bloomsburg winner. "I knew he (Danner) was back there and I didn't want to just give it to him. I just ran it as hard as I could on the top and as hard as the car could take it," Buckwalter noted. Towards the end of the race Buckwalter was solid and not only crossed the finish line first but also set a new track record for SpeedSTRs during the event with a fast lap of 17.574-seconds. Danner was not only doing what he could to catch Buckwalter but near the end had to fend off hard charging Eddie Strada who was right in his tire tracks. "I knew he (Buckwalter) and I were so even and I tried on the restarts and I probably could have forced the issue a little bit more but it wasn't really worth it. If I was going to pass him I was going to pass him under green," said Danner. "I was kind of hoping that lapped traffic would play into it a little bit and then the curb started building up there in (turn) one so I kind of backed off that bit more and settled into second. Strada's teammate, Doug Snyder and TJ Mayberry competed the top five. In the 602 Crate Modified main it was a hard-fought family affair between Carter and Kreg Crooker. C. Crooker took to the early lead with K. Crooker quickly on his tail and every lap from there through to the finish was a torrid battle as lap after lap the pair raced hard with neither backing down. Holding a very defensive line C. Crooker was able to stand his ground and take his first ever win here. Despite the unrelenting effort of K. Crooker, he did run the fastest lap of the race and in doing so set a new track record for the class at 17.188-seconds. Local favorite Matt Yoder, Mike Schane and Paulie Hartwig III completed the top five. Adam Campbell parlayed his front row starting spot into a win with the FWD 4-Cylinder Stocks as he led flag to flag while fending off Tim Campbell for the victory. In the Slingshot feature proved to be no match as he not only led every lap in the feature but did so in his heat. Turpin is also the first driver win at Bloomsburg with the class. SpeedSTR feature finish (25 laps): 1. Steve Buckwalter, 2. Briggs Danner, 3. Eddie Strada, 4. Doug Snyder, 5. TJ Mayberry, 6. Jason Muldowney, 7. Scott Houdeshell, 8. Charles Bellinger, 9. Mark Manieri, 10. Randy Mausteller, 11. Justin Thompson, 12. Louden Reimert, 13. Tim Buckwalter, 14. Cale Zangli 602 Crate Modified feature finish (20 laps): 1. Carter Crooker, 2. Kreg Crooker, 3. Matt Yoder, 4. Mike Schane, 5. Paulie Hartwig III, 6. Ben Feldman, 7. Greg Crooker, 8. Tyler Peet, 9. Mia Guy, 10. Joe Wilgus, 11. Ralph Mele, 13. Mike Loney DNS: Logan Starr FWD 4-Cylinder Stock feature finish (15 laps): 1. Adam Campbell, 2. Tim Campbell, 3. Kevin Doud, 4. AJ Hoffner, 5. Tim Raup, 6. 14D, 7. Larry Spencer Slingshots feature finish (8 laps): 1. Andrew Turpin, 2. Austin Kroboth, 3. Dylan Starr
- Jimmy Spencer serves as grand marshal at raceway in Columbia County
Former NASCAR driver Jimmy Spencer returned to the track, serving as grand marshal to begin the 2023 season at the Bloomsburg Fair Raceway. The Berwick native was known for his wild personality, ...
- "Mr. Excitement" Jimmy Spencer named Grand Marshall for April 20 Bloomsburg Fair Raceway Opener
(Bloomsburg, PA 4-16-23): When the 2023 season begins on Thursday evening, April 20, at the Bloomsburg Fair Raceway, there won't only be excitement taking place on the track but off as well when "Mr. Excitement" Jimmy Spencer, will be on hand serving as Grand Marshall. The Berwick native was a wildly popular personality both on and off the track. He began racing on dirt at Port Royal Speedway and Beach Haven Speedway in a Late Model but after turning his attention to pavement and Modifieds his career began to rocket. From nearby Evergreen Raceway and then onto the biggest motorsports stages in the country, Spencer was always a showstopper. His stock really began to rise once he started competing on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour where he and his family run team where regular winners and upfront finishers. Perhaps his biggest victory during his Modified years could easily be considered the 1982 CAM2 Race of Champions held at Pocono Raceway. Spencer started from the pole, led 60 of 250 laps and beat Jamie Tomaino in winning the Crown Jewel of Modified racing. He would go on to win the 1986-87 National NASCAR Modified Tour champion which would be his springboard to racing fulltime in NASCAR's top three tiers. Between 1985 and 2006 Spencer competed between Cup, Xfinity and Truck Series and is one of only 40 drivers to have won in each. Spencer also has national wins in the NASCAR K & N East, North and West Series, ARCA Menards Series, World Series of Stock Car Racing, PASS Late Model Series, SMART Tour, ASA National Tour, ARTGO Challenge Series and ACT Pro Tour. His final race was in Cup at Pocono Raceway in 2006 but afterwards he became a popular television commentator/analyst/podcaster. In 2019 Spencer was inducted into the Eastern Motorsport Press Association Hall of Fame. His father, Ed Spencer Sr., is a winner of over 200 features and raced at the Bloomsburg Fair in 1953 when the NASCAR Series ran a 200 lap event during the annual Fair. Opening Night is Thursday, April 20 with All-Pro SpeedSTRs, 602 Crate Modifieds, FWD 4-Cylinder Stocks, Slingshots on the card. Fans will have a special autograph session with "Mr. Excitement" Jimmy Spencer during intermission. There will also be a demonstration of the kids JuiceBox Division which will have several dates during the season. The JuiceBox Division is a Radio Flyer kart for kids 10 and under. Gates will open at 5:00 pm, hot laps at 6:15 pm and racing will begin at 7:00 pm. Adult grandstand admission is $15, seniors/Military/students are $13, kids 6-12 are $5 and under 5 free.
- Racers give positive response after Bloomsburg Fair Raceway Test and Tune…"Mr. Excitement" Jimmy Spencer named Grand Marshall for April 20 season opener
(Bloomsburg, PA 4-14-23): In advance of the third season of racing at the Bloomsburg Fair Raceway slated for April 20, a Test and Tune session was held this past Thursday evening and it was a twofold of sorts. For promoter Rich Tobias it gave him a good bit of insight into weeks of preparation after cars made laps on the newly resurfaced 3/8-mile dirt oval while for drivers it was an opportunity to not only do shake down runs but also see how the work by Tobias was what they hoped to expect from his years of track prep expertise. And the general consensus was all good from both sides. The cars that were on hand all got around fairly well with little if any dust issues, something that was problematic at times over the past two seasons. There were a few cars that also had some minor incidents but all in all drivers responded supportively of the track. A mix of SpeedSTRs, 602 Crate Modifieds, FWD 4-Cylinder Stocks, which will be part of the regular line-up, where on hand plus a few others. "The new surface was good, a little slimy at first but then it got real tacky. (Turns) Three and four is where all the new clay is and it was really good there and it was almost like Bridgeport (Speedway)," said Daryl Dissinger of Harrisburg, who runs a 602 Crate Modified. "I never used a tear-off every time I went out and for the first night I thought it was great. I think for the 602 class this will be a great track and you should see some exciting racing." Dissinger races weekly at Big Diamond Speedway on Friday nights but is planning to make all of the bi-monthly Thursday shows here. The SpeedSTRs will be the headline class and bringing out a new car was Tim Buckwalter of Pottstown. Buckwalter won the very first SpeedSTR race at Bloomsburg last April and is the 2022 USAC SpeedSTR champion at Action Track USA in Kutztown, a Tobias run track. "It was a lot less dusty then the last time we ran here and they definetley got that under control and there's some good moisture in it. The track stayed good the whole time and there may not be a whole lot of cars here but for the amount we have we probably put over a 100 laps on it and it stayed in good shape," said Buckwalter. "Anything Rich (Tobias) gets his hands in he does good at and I was so glad that when he said we were going to get more SpeedSTR races and that he was going to be running things here at Bloomsburg. He won't ever let the track go bad and he'll keep it good for all of us." Unofficially Doug Snyder of Easton posted a lap under the current SpeedSTR track record when is in his second session he turned a 17.728. Billy Pauch Jr., is the current class record holder at 17.923 set in April of last year. "We've been working hard and Ben Stolz (Digital Marketing Manager) has certainly been a blessing with everything both in the office and helping me on track and I'm just glad to see this all come to fruition and I can't wait until next Thursday when we have our opener," said Tobias. "Most of our racers have to travel a bit to get here so I can understand that not as many came out for a practice but I feel that once they see the track we have for them that we'll do pretty good." The Test and Tune was also set with a new inner oval ready for the Slingshot cars. However, with only one car making the trip Tobias instead offered driver Andrew Turpin of Saylorsburg the option to run either that small track or the big track. He chose the latter. "Honestly we do it in New York fairly often where at a lot of those bigger tracks they run the Slingshots and its more fun on them too. You can choose lines differently and there's more options for passing with these cars," Turpin said of running the oval similar to Bloomsburg. "We were coming here expecting to run on the little track and that was small and tight. We are small (cars) but not go karts and we need a little bit more track room." Turpin, like everyone else, gave good reviews and feels it will be no problem for the Slingshots to race on the big track. "Here it felt nice and a lot of it's in the gearing and the set-up. I didn't really have to lift off the throttle at all and I would say to all the other Slingshot guys is to come out and try it here. It was smooth and there's a lot of space to race on and you don't have to pull the kind of moves you would on a smaller, tighter size track." Tobias is okay whichever track the Slingshots drivers opt for. His intent is to give them a good track to race on and at in front of such a historic backdrop. "We'll give them the option and if they want to run the big track we'll let them. We're always open to suggestions and this is all new and I think it would be exciting for them out there if they did race on the big track," explained Tobias. "The biggest thing with the Slingshots they're going to be running in front of this awesome grandstands. And with this type facility along with Action Track and some of the other tracks we have, it's great that the Slingshots have the opportunity to compete at a facility like Bloomsburg." Tobias has a great reputation for his track prep at Kutztown and it was that same knowledge why the Fair Board reached out to him to run the program in 2023. Thursday's Test and Tune it seems has everything pointed in the right direction. "I always try to teach racers that someone is going to win tonight and everyone is on the same race track and teach positive attitude which is very important in this sport," said Tobias. Additionally Jimmy Spencer, better known as "Mr. Excitement" will the guest of honor for the Thursday evening, April 20 season opener. During his driving career the Berwick native was a wildly popular personality both on and off the track. He began racing on dirt at Port Royal Speedway in a Late Model but after turning his attention to pavement and Modifieds his career began to rocket. Spencer became a two-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion which eventually led to him gaining a seat into the NASCAR Xfinity (Busch) Series and eventually Cup Series. Spencer has wins in the top three tiers of NASCAR which also includes the Truck Series. His final race was in Cup at Pocono Raceway in 2006 but afterwards he became television commentator/analyst/podcaster. Opening Night is Thursday, April 20. Gates will open at 5:00 pm, hots laps at 6:15 pm and racing will begin at 7:00 pm.
- Test and Tune at Bloomsburg Fair Raceway all set for April 13…season opener one week later

- Bloomsburg Fair Raceway getting new clay in place for start of 2023 season
(BLOOMSBURG 3-17-23): In just about a month's time racing will get underway at the Bloomsburg Fair Raceway which begins the third season at the 3/8-mile dirt oval located inside the historic Bloomsburg Fairgrounds in Bloomsburg. And as the anticipation mounts there has been a flurry of groundwork taking place both on and off the track in preparation for the Thursday, April 20 season opener. Under the direction of Rich Tobias - who is part of the promotional team that includes Steve O'Neal and Dino Oberto - the track surface has been the focus of attention with most of the emphasis in turns three and four. It was no mystery that drivers had noted those two corners should have more banking and that's exactly what Tobias went to work on, adding his magic touch of keen track prep that has been very successful at Action Track USA in Kutztown where he co-manages on Wednesday nights with Doug Rose. This past week the third and fourth turns where scraped. Once that was done Tobias completely re-contoured the banking with new dirt and limestone clay. The result is close to four feet of added banking. "For years I lived around limestone quarries and I looked at them making roads and I always said that limestone clay would make for a great track and that's what we always used at Action Track USA and it's also the same clay they use at Port Royal Speedway," said Tobias. "We were just very fortunate that some farmer in a field dug down and said, 'Hey I think I got something that you may want,' and we went and looked at it just two miles down the road from the race track and it was an awesome vein of great limestone clay which we'll be covering the race track with." The first and second turns had similar work done last season and Tobias felt there was not as much effort needed on that end of the surface. In all there are plans to have close to 100 truckloads of clay brought in. The clay was sent out to be tested and was approved, showing low sand content. "They already did a great job reshaping (turns) one and two which I did do a little more contouring change to that. Three and four we're basically doing what they did to one and two which is to make it for sure sixty-five feet of multi-groove racing," he said. Tobias was also working out the design of a new inner oval which will be used for the Slingshot race cars that will be running as part of the night's regular program. The Slingshot mimics a scaled down dirt Modified and is powered by a Briggs & Stratton engine. They give drivers the opportunity to race without the large investment of motorsports and these purpose built race cars are designed for 1/8 to 1/3 mile dirt and pavement speedways. "It's going to be a challenging race track and it will be very close to the same size as what the Trenton indoor race was. Everyone knows how exciting the race there was for the 600 Micros and hopefully the Slingshots will be looking forward to some great new challenging aspect here at Bloomsburg," noted Tobias. "The biggest thing with the Slingshots they're going to be running in front of this awesome grandstands. And with this type facility along with Action Track and some of the other tracks we have, it's great that the Slingshots have the opportunity to compete at a facility like Bloomsburg." Additionally there will be 100 arborvitaes planted around the outside wall starting in turn one and along the back straight into turns three and four. "It's all good especially for the first time being able to work on the track. They have great equipment and great people that give me what I need to do the job right and I'm looking forward to the big change we're going to have with the whole surface and the type of racing and atmosphere," said Tobias. "It's very exciting looking forward to the start of the 2023 season here. They did a great job building it and we're just refining it. Fairgrounds are what made auto racing in central Pennsylvania and most of all your key race tracks were fairgrounds and to be able to work at one like I do at Kutztown and now here at Bloomsburg, I feel the racers should be ultimately excited to be able to race at a fairgrounds type of atmosphere," offered Tobias. "Certainly come September getting to race at one of the biggest fairs in the country is going to be incredible. The opportunities for the racers to showcase on a great race track is just endless." The Bloomsburg Fair Raceway will continue to keep up its goal of presenting action packed family entertainment at a good value. This year will also be a bit of a different feel as the track will run more standard divisions and for the first time there will be class champions crowned when all is said and done.
