WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 28, 2026) - Kaeden Cornell broke a six-year victory lane drought at Lucas Oil Speedway with an exciting victory Friday night over Cole Henson in the Hermitage Lumber Late Model portion of Night 1 of the Rempfer Memorial Pitts Homes & Realty Challenge Cup.
Cornell, of Willard, led all 20 laps, but had to fend off a last-lap charge from Henson. Both were championship contenders in the Late Model class during the 2018-21 seasons.
"It was really good," Cornell said of car. "I have to thank my dad and my mom and Zach and everybody who comes with me. Dad's been calling me a Podium Princess lately, because I couldn't win one."
Other feature wins went to Cole Campbell (Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds), Jon Sheets (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), William Garner (O'Reilly's USRA Stock Cars) and Mike Striegel (Hickamo Super Stocks).
The Rempfer Memorial Challenge Cup is named to honor Harold "Rowdy" Rempfer and his wife, Julia, who were killed in an automobile accident in 2018. Rowdy was the mayor of Wheatland and he and Julia both worked at Lucas Oil Speedway.
A total of 114 cars checked into the pits. The inaugural season of the Challenge Cup offers increased payouts and points funds in all five divisions.
Cornell started fifth, but had the lead by turn four of lap one. Henson, the pole starter, bobbled on the opening lap but recovered to catch Henson by lap eight. Getting around him was another matter as the leaders battled in lapped traffic. Using a couple of those lapped cars to his advantage, Cornell was able to increase his lead to 1.2 seconds by lap 16.
But Henson rallied and was applying pressure by lap 18. Caution flew at that point as points leader JC Morton slowed to a stop in turn two. Morton headed to the pits and left Cornell and Henson for a two-lap shootout.
Cornell held on for the win, withstanding Henson's slider in the final turn, for a win by .836 seconds.
"I knew Cole was gonna slide me, I was just hoping that I could get back under it," said Cornell, a five-time winner of the fan-voted Most Popular Driver at Lucas Oil Speedway. "I appreciate him running me clean."
Dayton Pursley was third with defending track champion Robbe Ewing - who inherited the points lead - was fourth and Bryon Allison fifth. Morton was credited with 16th and fell 21 points behind Ewing.
Campbell scores Modifieds win: Cole Campbell of Mexico, Mo., earned his first Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified at the speedway this season, beat Ryan Middaugh by just over two seconds.
Campbell led 19 of the 20 laps, briefly losing it to Middaugh before regaining command on lap 14.
"It was a good race and the car felt pretty good," Campbell said. "There at the end, the car started to fade a little bit. We probably should have put some better tires on, but the track was so hammer-down I felt we could get by save a few bucks with some junk tires."
Campbell beat Phillips to the lead as the front-row starters took the green and charged to a 1.2-second lead five laps into the race.
Following the third caution of the race in six laps, things settled in and Campbell took advantage by lap 10 to lead by 1.6 seconds. But his margin was erased a lap later with a debris caution.
On the lap 13 restart, Campbell and Phillips went high in turn four and Ryan Middaugh drove past them and into the lead. One lap later, Campbell was back to the point, going around Middaugh on the outside of turn one.
Campbell drove away from there and took the checkers 2.3 seconds clear of Middaugh. Phillips was third with points leader Chase Sigg fourth and Chad Lyle fifth.
Sheets wins USRA B-Mods thriller: In a doozy of the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod feature, points leader Jon Sheets took the lead coming to the white flag and held off Chad Clancy and JC Morton for his sixth win of the season.
Sheets, of Nevada, took a big step toward nailing down his second straight track championship in a race that had nine lead changes among four drivers.
"I knew I had a good-enough race car if I could get to the lead and luckily was able to get it done," Sheets said.
Morton had just taken the lead away from early pace-setting Waylon Dimmitt on lap three when caution came out. By that point, Sheets already had advanced from seventh to fourth.
Clancy grabbed second after the restart and quickly challenged the leader. He took the point away from Morton on lap seven, coming out of turn four - but Morton regained the lead a lap later.
The back-and-forth battle was halted on lap nine for a debris caution. Sure enough, on the restart, Clancy regained the lead before they swapped positions again on lap 10 for the sixth lead change among three drivers.
Joining the fray was Sheets, the reigning track champ. He had a good view as Clancy again took the lead on lap 14 as the top trio broke away from the field. It was Morton's turn again on lap 16 - just before a caution slowed the field with four to go.
It was a three-car battle after the restart with Sheets sliding to the lead coming to the white flag. Sheets took it home from there, beating Clancy by .804 seconds with Morton right behind.
"Everybody was just really equal tonight, racing really hard," Sheets said. "It's really hard to pass when JC and Chad are two-wide the entire race. I was pulling every trick out of the hat I knew. I was trying to find clean air that they weren't win.
"I just got lucky. JC slid himself and allowed me to slide him a little more and pick up a ton of speed rolling through one and two. Lucky enough to get it done just in time."
Garner hangs on in O'Reilly USRA Stock Cars: William Garner of Lebanon won for the third time of the season, holding off Mason Beck in the O'Reilly USRA Stock Cars 20-lap feature.
Garner will seek his second track championship on Saturday night, but Beck will still have a chance to claim his third title. The unofficial difference is 19 points.
"Man, I just have to thank everybody who helps me in this thing," Garner said. "Josh Franklin puts in a lot of time to help me get this thing going. This is pretty special win for us. This is the first win since our baby girl was born. I have to thank my wife and my whole family for helping me."
Second-starting Garner, the reigning division track champ, took the lead from Jayce Reimer on lap four with Mason Beck in third.
Garner was nearly two seconds ahead by the midway point on lap 10 as Beck charged to second as Reimer slipped to third. As laps clicked by under green-flag conditions, Garner's lead melted to .645 seconds by lap 18.
Garner held on to prevail by a half-second over Beck with Wettengel third, Austin Kaplan fourth and Reimer fifth.
Striegel strikes late for Hickamo Super Stocks win: Hometown driver Mike Striegel made it two feature wins in the Hickamo Super Stocks this season, taking the lead on lap 15 and holding off Terry Schultz.
The second-starting Ewing rolled to the lead with Michael Muskrat, starting to his inside, giving chase through three laps. Schultz moved to second on lap four and was a half-second behind Ewing when caution slowed the action on lap 13.
Things got wild after the restart with Striegel, who started seventh, went from third to third on lap 15 before another caution halted the action with five laps remaining.
Striegel held on the rest of the way and beat Schultz to the finish line by .717 seconds. Tony Anglin finished third, Ewing fourth and Jacob Rexing was fifth.
"That was a great race. Them guys up front who race here weekly with us, they're the most respectful racers I've ever raced against," Striegel said "A salute to them for giving everybody room, and I gave them. What a heck of a race."

The first season of the Challenge Cup, which features increased payouts and points funds, also offers a "To the Back Bonus" where scheduled pole-position feature starters can elect to start tailback make extra money if they win - an extra $1,000 for features with a minimum of 18 cars and an extra $555 for features with 13-17 starters.
Saturday-night finale: The final night on Saturday finds pit and grandstand gates opening at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and opening ceremonies at 7.
