- Lucas Oil Speedway, Dallas County Speedway USRA B-Mod points champs to earn $1,000, with bonus offered for B-Mod, Stock Car sweeps
WHEATLAND, MO. (Jan. 31, 2023) - Drivers competing in the USRA B-Mod divisions at Lucas Oil Speedway and Dallas County Speedway can take home some extra points money during the 2023 season. Both tracks, in conjunction with the United States Racing Association, will pay their B-Mod track champions $1,000. Places two-through-10 in points - as long as drivers compete in a minimum of 80 percent of scheduled points events at each track - also will earn extra money. Those who fall under 80 percent will receive normal USRA B-Mod points payout. "We're pleased to make it even more attractive to race on a regular basis in our Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod division, in a partnership with Dallas County Speedway and the USRA," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said. Lorton noted that the second-place driver in points will earn what was previous the championship total with additional money also dispersed throughout the remainder of the top 10. Those figures are: 2nd - $600. 3rd - $425. 4th - $300. 5th - $250. 6th - $200. 7th - $175. 8th - $150. 9th and 10th - $125. "I think it's gonna be a good deal for the drivers," Dallas County Speedway promoter Scotty Allen said. "It's $2,000 if you can win both the Lucas and Dallas County points and it's only 20 miles apart. Plus, not only does the track champ get more, the whole top 10 gets more." The USRA national points fund will pay $6,000 to the USRA B-Mod National Champion. Both Lucas Oil Speedway and Dallas County also will continue paying a $250 bonus to any B-Mod or Stock Cars driver who can win both features on the same weekend at the tracks, Friday at Dallas County and Saturday at Lucas. "The feature bonus for Stock Cars has proven to be popular, with both of us putting up an extra $125 for any driver sweeping the weekend features, and we're happy to be doing that in the B-Mod class as well," Lorton said. Lucas Oil Speedway's schedule begins with an open Test and Tune set for March 18 followed by the Big Adventure Weekly Racing Series Weekly Opener on March 25. The first weekly points program at Dallas County Speedway is set for April 21. - Lucas Oil Speedway Preseason Spotlight: After narrow miss, Rob White sets sights on track championship
WHEATLAND, MO. (Jan. 26, 2023) - The cliche answers for most drivers when asked about upcoming season goals are to "just go out and try to win races and let the points take care of themselves" or something to that effect. Rob White is an exception. The veteran driver from Lebanon is specific about his mission in the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Car division at Lucas Oil Speedway. "I want to win the Lucas championship and that's what I'm gonna focus on this year," White said. Why is that so important? "It's the Diamond of Dirt Tracks," White said. "I really want to win the championship there." White is hopeful the old adage "the third time is the charm" applies. He's finished runner-up in the chase for the track championship each of the last two seasons, including a narrow eight-point deficit in 2022. At least it stayed in the family, however, as his son Bryan White won the title last season. Bragging rights also went to the younger White. As they did at Dallas County Speedway where Rob White finished four points behind William Garner in the points battle. He referred to Garner as "like another son" who has gone to the races with the Whites since he was a youngster. Rob White said he joked with both Bryan and William before the final points races of last season about a possible "arrangement." "I told 'em if they'd let me win those points championships that I'd go retire and they could go have fun. They wouldn't do it," Rob White said with a laugh. So his quest in the highly competitive and rapidly growing division will resume in mid-March when the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series kicks off at Lucas Oil Speedway. Rob White, who's raced on and off for three decades in various dirt-track divisions, said the USRA Stock Car class is the most fun he's ever had. "It's real competitive. Everybody gives everybody room and respect," he said. "That means a lot. It's hard to get away from anybody at all. It makes it exciting." It also makes it a bit stressful when racing against his son. The final night of last season was a prime example as Rob needed to finish three spots in front of Bryan to overtake him for the points title. While Rob finished a strong second, Bryan came home in third. "I was keeping an eye on that scoreboard," Rob White said. "I seen when he got to third, that it was over then. Racing with him is stressful. You pay attention to where he's at and quit paying attention to what you're doing. Then the competitive side kicks in and you start racing." Rob said he's proud of Bryan, along with son Jakob White, who won two features in the Pure Stock division last season at Dallas County. "I don't think you can get much more of a proud dad than I am," he said. "Both my boys, they've both had real good success." As for how he hopes to wrest away the Lucas Oil Speedway championship this season, Rob White said it's all about consistency. "The third time's the charm, I hope," he said. "It's just consistency. You've got to be good in your heat races so it gets you lined up good in your features." Rob White said his sponsor list includes Norris Logging, Bowman Bail Bonds, Price Enterprise, The Butcher Shop of Camdenton, Garner and Smith Insurance, The Burger Basket and Mid-State Machine. Season openers: Lucas Oil Speedway's schedule begins with an open Test and Tune set for March 18 followed by the Big Adventure Weekly Racing Series Weekly Opener on March 25. Classes in action include the Hermitage Lumber Late Models, Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifieds, O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars, and the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods. The Hermitage Lumber Late Models will be running a special 25-lap $1,000-to-win featured event. Major event ticket reminders: Fans are reminded that reserved three-day pass renewals for the 31st annual Show-Me 100 Presented by Protecttheharvest.com, May 25-27, are now available. - Lucas Oil Speedway Preseason Spotlight: Gillmore eager for more USRA B-Mod success in '23
WHEATLAND, MO. (Jan. 24, 2023) - One year ago, Ryan Gillmore was entering a season of change with anticipation and uncertainty. The long-time successful USRA B-Mod driver from Springfield was debuting a new chassis and wasn't sure what to expect. After 15 overall features victories - including the Summit USRA Nationals B-Mod main event - plus a strong second-place finish in Lucas Oil Speedway Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod points the answer was a resounding success. "I couldn't be any happier with the end result," Gillmore said of his performance in an Allen Autosports car. "It was a benchmark year, for sure, and something that is going to be hard to match this coming season." But Gillmore is itching to give it a shot. The 30-year-old is aiming high, with his sights set on a potential USRA National Championship run, something he won back in 2017. "More of the same, right off the bat, and as the season rolls one I'd like to hit some money shows and win some traveling stuff to get my name out there a little more," Gillmore said of 2023 goals. "I'd like to take a stab at a national championship. This last year we chased it kind of blindly. "You never know how national points are going to shake out. There are so many variables. So, just get as many wins as I can and tear up the least possible." That's kind of how the home stretch of 2022 went for Gillmore, who wound up fifth in USRA national points after winning 11 features from July 29th on last season. Gillmore said it was as good as any stretch he's had in his career and the culmination of collaborating with chassis builder Scotty Allen in fully figuring out the new ride. "Right off the bat did well," Gillmore said. "Then I got complacent on my own and didn't think I was very good in the middle part of the season. Scotty and I worked together and found some things at the end of the season. "I won a lot of big races at the end. The last three months, we were pretty well lights out everywhere we went. I was not really surprised, but was surprised at the same time. I really thought it was gonna take longer just to start figuring some things out with the car, but everything jelled like it was supposed to and it was all good." The confidence when man and machine are clicking is hard to describe. "Everywhere we went, we were in definite contention for the win," he said. "We had speed and no matter what I did, to mess anything up, it seemed like we were good. I knew every time I unloaded that I had confidence that we could win. That helped me mentally knowing that my car was good and I could back it up when I got on the race track." Gillmore called the USRA Nationals triumph, which completed a flawless week that included two other preliminary wins, perhaps the biggest of his career. "It took me a couple of weeks to reflect on it and say, 'I did it,' " Gillmore said. "After it first ended, it was like, 'what happened?' The whole week was a big blur. I don't know what we did to deserve that one, but everything just clicked perfect that whole week." Best of all, the car barely got a scratch on it and that's made for a less-stressful offseason. The immediate challenge, Gillmore said, is finishing up a new race shop before engines fire up for competition in a little more than a month. "We're just gonna freshen up some things and hopefully start the season kind of where we ended," he said. "Just give it a little bit of love before we get back on the road again." Gillmore's race team sponsors return intact. Those include Choate Farms, Yeoman Race Engines, Allen Autosports, Metal Magic Auto Hail Repair, Chaney Doorworks, Ron Ron Motorsports, Vinyl Cup Records, Elena Rodgers Motorsports, Oz Designs, CPD Racing Shocks, McCoy's Iron and Metal, Allen's Automotive, Fast Shafts, Bud's Tire & Wheel, Atnip Enterprises and Show-Me Dirt. Newcomers include C&M Gear Works, Carter's Auto Glass and Polk County Glass. "I'm proud of keeping the same people around year after year on the side of the car," Gillmore said. That means a lot to me, taking care of them while they take care of me." Known for his engaging personality as well as his driving skills, fans can hear Gillmore's Pit Shack Podcast weekly. He and co-host Trevor Drake talk to area drivers and racing figures with a new show out each Thursday or Friday. "We're trying to get a hold of different people in the region and let them tell their story," Gillmore said. "Maybe not always the people who get the recognition or interview time. It's fun to do and it's fun to learn. "We did it for year and a half, until late 2020, then got busy racing. We brought it back about two months ago. There are now 32 episodes total and I'm gonna try to keep it going through the summer, if our racing schedule allows." Season openers: Lucas Oil Speedway's schedule begins with an open Test and Tune set for March 18 followed by the Big Adventure Weekly Racing Series Weekly Opener on March 25. Classes in action include the Hermitage Lumber Late Models, Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifieds, O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars, and the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods. - Lucas Oil Speedway Preseason Spotlight: USRA Modified runner-up Hodges preps for double duty
WHEATLAND, MO. (Jan. 17, 2023) - Dustin Hodges is eager to see some double duty in 2023, adding a Super Late Model to his USRA Modified stable. After finishing a close second to Dillon McCowan in the Lucas Oil Speedway Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified division last season, plans came together this offseason for Hodges to drive a Rocket XR1. "I'm really excited to get to try something that's been an ultimate dream," Hodges said. The specifics of Hodges' schedule remains uncertain, though the driver from Centralia does plan to make his debut in the Late Model at the 10th annual MLRA Spring Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway, March 31 and April 1. "We hope to do some MLRA stuff and some regional stuff, just to kind of get our feet wet and try to create as much of a notebook as we can this year," Hodges said. "The plan is to kind of see how things go with it. "I think our main focus will be the Modified, but our main goal with it would be to hit a half-dozen to a dozen races with the Late Model." While stepping into the open Late Model world will be new, driving Late Models is not foreign to Hodges. He won ULMA national championships in 2016 and 2018 and was a series rookie of the year in 2015. In recent years, Hodges settled into the Modified division and has been a consistent contender. He raced regularly at Lucas Oil Speedway for the first time in 2022 and got better as the year went on, finishing with two wins in the second half of the season to go with 12 top-five finishes in 14 events. Hodges wound up only 22 points behind McCowan in the points chase. He also picked up six feature wins and the track championship at Callaway Raceway. Overall, Hodges was third in USRA National points behind Tyler Davis and McCowan. "It was a really good year," Hodges said. "The last half was really awesome once we finally got things figured out to what we were needing. Once we got the car dialed in, everything went pretty darn smooth." The success at Lucas was rewarding, especially the first trips to victory lane. "Getting to race at that premier track, knowing that it is halfway close to home … we had a blast," Hodges said. "It seems like overall track conditions have changed a little bit and it kind of fits us a little better." He's looking to continue that success at Wheatland this season, even if he doesn't run the Modified for points. "I wouldn't say we really have specific goals," Hodges said of the year ahead. "Every time we jump in the Modified, I would like to be a podium car for sure and compete for wins everywhere we go with it. The Late Model stuff, we're just trying to keep an open mind and try to learn from all those guys. "The amount of technology and, unfortunately the amount of money it takes to run a Late Model, we have to see if we can compete and keep everything well-maintained to see if we can run with those guys." If the budget allowed, Hodges said he would like to run the Late Model all season and chase the MLRA rookie title. That might not be in the cards, however, with only one motor on hand. "Our ultimate goal is to get an additional power-plant so we can look to run for the (MLRA) Rookie title," Hodges said. Hodges' crew includes his uncle John Doerr and friend Kyle Harrison. Team sponsors are Kimberling Enterprise, Danny Crane Race Engines, Foundation Recovery Systems, Mid-America Carpenters Union, Melloway Fast Traps, Iron Gate Real Estate, The Drain Doctor, Rich and Chris Mobile Home Transport, Danny Wimer Law Firm, Show-Me Heating & Air and Flood Zone Motorworks. - Lucas Oil Speedway Preseason Spotlight: Cox looks to build on hot Late Model finish
WHEATLAND, MO. (Jan. 12, 2023) - Tucker Cox finished the 2022 racing season in a rush, then it was over. Cox captured a long-sought first Late Model feature victory at Lucas Oil Speedway, along with two feature triumphs at Callaway Raceway. Now with a new season approaching, the 23-year-old from Jefferson City is eager to try and carry over the momentum. "It was pretty good overall," Cox said of last season. "I was a little frustrated about midway through the year, but at the end we won three of the last four races. We started getting the car figured out." Cox wound up a distant second to veteran Larry Ferris in the Lucas Oil Speedway Hermitage Lumber Late Model points chase as Ferris had a dominant season. But Cox, who's still learning the Late Model game, is planning an ambitious schedule in 2023 with 39 events planned, between Lucas and Callaway. "With a couple of other places, we hope to run 43 total," said Cox, who said his MB Customs race car is just about ready to roll after a motor freshening and usual offseason maintenance. Cox, the son of long-time Late Model regional racer Chris Cox, said the car started to come around when he stopped trying to throw the kitchen sink at it between his heat race and the feature. Things clicking the final Saturday night of August at Wheatland when he led all 20 laps to prevail, by 1.5 seconds over Matt Becker. "Winning that first (feature at Lucas) meant a lot because we finally got everything going the right direction," Cox said. "We weren't really far off. Larry Ferris was really good. We just needed to not change so much from the heat race to the feature. "That was the biggest thing. I was over-adjusting a little bit for the feature. It was more my fault than anything really. We changed a few things on the shocks and springs and that was really about it." As for 2023 goals, Cox is ready to raise his standard. He recently told his dad he wants to win at least 10 features this season. "I think that's a pretty good goal," he said. "As far as the points go, I'd like to win Wheatland's track championship as well as Callaway's. But I'm not gonna get too worried about points. Just gonna try to win all I can and go from there." Cox knows that Ferris will be tough to beat, but he welcomes the challenge. "Larry and Brian Larimore worked really hard last year," Cox said. "Larry's a really good driver and he's been racing for a long time. It's hard to compete with him, but I'm glad he races with us. That makes me better and everybody else better, too." When Lucas Oil Speedway released the schedule, which finds the season opening several weeks earlier than it did a year ago, Cox smiled. That's when his idea of a busy workload, of 39 or more races, kicked in. "I'm real excited because Wheatland is starting a little bit earlier," he said. "I like starting earlier. Hopefully if we have troubles, we get those out of the way early. Hopefully we don't have any. The main thing is starting the season out a little stronger than last year." "Tony Stewart had a big hand in helping with the selections of iconic race tracks and when you hear the name Lucas Oil, and Lucas Oil Speedway, you just go 'wow, I want to go there,' " Hawk added. "They were literally on our radar from day one, when when requests starting coming in. They get it, they understand it and they understand the big picture and we can't wait to go there." "We can't wait for racing fans across the world to see Lucas Oil Speedway on ESPN and I know our fans will turn out in force for this one-of-a-kind event with some of the legends of racing in action." Hawk gave a further breakdown of the schedule, starting with the opener at Stafford which is near the ESPN campus in Bristol, Conn. "It was important to us to kick-off this summer at Stafford Motor Speedway, in Bristol's backyard," Hawk said. "Stafford and the Arute family have done a first-class job, and the proximity to ESPN made the home-game concept very exciting. SRX's first visit to Thunder Road (VT) will be awesome - the fans there are spectacular, and we're excited for race rans around the country to see how awesome that place is. "We are equally excited to visit Motor Mile and Berlin Race - these are two tracks that have been on our radar since day one. - Lucas Oil Speedway Champions Spotlight: Bryan White meets, exceeds expectations on his way to USRA Stock Cars title
WHEATLAND, MO. (Dec. 13, 2022) - Bryan White used to drive over to Lucas Oil Speedway and watch the weekly racing action, dreaming of someday competing on the oval. Little did the 21-year-old from Lebanon realize that just a few years later, he would do that - and much, more. White first's full season as a competitor at Lucas Oil Speedway saw him win two races and the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars track championship. As an added bonus, he earned family bragging rights by finishing eight points in front of his dad, Rob White, in the points chase. "It means a lot," Bryan White said of what the championship means to him. "I grew up at racetracks and around racing, at Lebanon and Dallas County and went to Lucas a lot when I was able to start driving as a kid. I've always wanted to race there. So it means a lot. "Yeah, I exceeded expectations by far. I just wanted to win a couple of races and get a top-five in points. I didn't even imagine getting top five in national points." Bryan White got his start in racing six years ago in a Pure Stock at Midway Speedway. By the end of the year, he won two features and a track championship. He moved into the Midwest Mod division the next season before the Stock Cars caught his eye a couple of years ago. White, who also competed regularly at Lebanon Midway Speedway this season, won nine races overall in 2022 to wind up fifth in Medieval USRA national points. Consistency put him over the top at Lucas Oil Speedway, where he piled up eight top-five finishes and 11 top-10s in the fast-growing division. Bryan's third-place feature finish on Rempfer Memorial Championship night was enough to take the championship as he finished one spot behind Rob White as Rodney Schweizer won the race. "I started out strong, winning the first race of the season at Midway and it set the pace for the whole year," White said. "The key was racing two nights a week and keeping the car going and nothing breaking. "It's going to keep getting tougher and tougher," he said of the Stock Car class. "It'll eventually be just as tough as the B-Mods, if not tougher." Which is why White and his dad are looking for ways to take their games to a higher level in the future. They're developing a new White Race Cars chassis, which could be ready before the end of next season. Meanwhile, the Whites will be putting new bodies on their 2022 cars over the winter while freshening everything else underneath. Meanwhile, Bryan White encourages fans to follow his YouTube page @5thgearracing during the offseason. Team sponsors include The Butcher Shop out of Camdenton, Garner & Smith Insurance, Garner Construction, Complete Services, Price Enterprises, Volunteer Metal Finishing, Alive Wire Electric, The Burger Basket and Mike Bowman Bail Bonds." - Lucas Oil Speedway Champions Spotlight: New chassis, same result as Jackson makes it seven B-Mod titles
WHEATLAND, MO. (Dec. 8, 2022) - Kris Jackson's record seventh Lucas Oil Speedway track championship felt a little different from the others because the Lebanon driver won it driving a car he built from the ground up. It was more than a year ago when Jackson and his cousin, Tony Jackson Jr., formed J2 Motorsports with the idea putting Kris' background of B-Modified success to use in business. J2 chassis number one - driven by Kris - wound up winning 31 features in 64 total events in 2022. Included were six wins at Lucas Oil Speedway where the 38-year-old Jackson claimed another Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod championship. He wound up 17 points in front of Ryan Gillmore, who charged fast in the season's home stretch to keep the outcome in doubt until the final night. Perhaps the latest championship, to go with others in 2012-14 and 2019, 2020 and 2021, was meant to be. Jackson all but ceded the points lead to Gillmore in a mid-summer race, to compete at a special event in Wisconsin, but a rogue thunderstorm rained action out at Wheatland. "We got lucky," Jackson said. Maybe he was lucky that week. But otherwise, luck had little to do with it for one of America's premier USRA B-Mod drivers. A two-time USRA National champion, Jackson finished runner-up in national points this season, 62 behind Minnesota's Joe Chisholm. The fact Jackson did it in the new chassis made it a bit sweeter. J2 just sold its 21st car this week and drivers using the chassis have combined to win nearly 100 races this season. Shadren Turner and Jon Sheets are among Missouri drivers to win multiple times. "I would say that to me is what I'm proudest about," Jackson said. "There's not just one fast car coming out of here, they're all pretty fast. Shadren Turner, Jon Sheets, Jake Hodges out in Kansas. We sent one to Tennessee that Brent Smith won in. "We probably had five cars racing this year and I think we'll have at least 10 racing next year, if everybody that has one races." Jackson said he was pleasantly surprised by how good the car was right out of the shop, beginning with a successful venture to the Wild West Shootout last January. He plans to take the same car back to Vado, N.M., next month for the six-night series. "I really thought we would have to change more stuff than we did," Jackson said. "It was fast right off the bat and we've changed out set-ups a little bit and picked up some speed again. I'm just very happen with them. "I didn't really anticipate business going this good, but it's moving along quite well. We've moved into a new building on Route 66 in the middle of Lebanon. We bought it and refurbished and got settled in, trying to click out some cars." As for his racing plans beyond the Wild West Shootout, Jackson said he anticipates a similar schedule. But unless Mother Nature creates some timely rain outs, when he chooses to travel for B-Mod specials, his record number of Lucas Oil Speedway championships might stall at seven. Looking into the not-too-distant future, there's also a chance that son Karter, soon to turn 11, might get into a Modified and get some test time. "We're planning on taking him out and let him drive around the local track and get used to it, then maybe turn him loose when he's 12," Jackson said. But until then, Karter will continue helping his dad, along with crew members Jordan and Jared Medley. "It definitely was another good year. We can't complain," Jackson said. - Lucas Oil Speedway Champions Spotlight: Young McCowan celebrates in memory of Grandpa with Late Model plans next
WHEATLAND, MO. (Dec. 6, 2022) - Dillon McCowan has many fond memories of talking racing with his grandfather and one of those was a desire both had for Dillon to turn competitive laps in a dirt Late Model. "That was our goal and it was special to all of us," Dillon McCowan said. "We couldn't have done it without Jesse Stovall. He loaned us a car and we were able to put it together and practice a little bit and eventually run a couple of races in it. "I was sure glad that Grandpa got to see us run it." A.D. McCowan, an Ozarks Area Racers Foundation Hall of Famer, passed away in September but not before 18-year-old Dillon had a pair of strong Late Model runs in the Lucas Oil Speedway Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series. There also was a second straight track championship in the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified division. The wrap for both cars was A.D. McCowan's yellow No. 7x that he campaigned. That made it even more special for the entire family. Dillon McCowan said it's time to retire the 7x and return to his green No. 8 in 2023. But a new chapter awaits as the Urbana resident is planning to move primarily to a Late Model, beginning with the Wild West Shootout next month in Vado, N.M. "The plan right now is to take a Late Model and try to run it every night," McCowan said of the six-night Wild West Shootout. "We're trying to get geared up for the (Lucas Oil) MLRA season. We're gonna try to run that full time and hit some different super shows. "We'll still have a Modified to run some USMTS stuff with it. We may take one Late Model and one Modified out to Vado, but I know for sure we'll be running a Late Model." McCowan said he has a 2017 Longhorn that he and his dad, Charlie, have been working regularly on to prepare for next season. He called it a natural progression - and one he often talked with A.D. McCowan about. "That's the goal and always has been the goal, racing Late Models for a living," McCowan said. "I love watching the Late Models and racing them is even better. It's a heck of a lot of fun. I promise you when they're good, they drive amazing compared to a Modified. But when it's not good, you can't muscle it around like you can a Modified." McCowan's busy 2022 season saw him enter 72 events with 17 wins, 11 second-place finishes and 46 top-fives. He scored seven feature victories at Lucas Oil Speedway, where he wound up 22 points in front of Dustin Hodges in the championship chase. "It was an amazing season," McCowan said. "We won quite a few races over there at Lucas. This year we wanted to pull the championship off for Grandpa. Not having him now really makes it tough, but being able to pull off the championship the second year in a row for him that was really good. "It was fun getting to race there all season long and being in a points battle with Dustin and a couple of other guys. That made it really fun. I thought the track was exceptionally good all year long. The times we did hit the set-up on the car right, everything came together good and it was a fun season." McCowan smiled about being named Lucas Oil Speedway's Most Popular Driver, from online fan balloting, for the second straight year. His friendly demeanor in the pits interacting with kids - and adults of all ages - is one he learned from his time as a lad. "I love it when kids come over to the trailer. I used to be that little kid who wanted to go and talk to the drivers in the pits and see what was happening back there," McCowan said. "I love signing cards for the kids. You have to be kind and respectful to everybody who comes back there. Without the fans, we wouldn't be racing. It's all about the fans. That's why we're there." Asked if there are specific drivers that stood out to him as a fan growing up, he said many fit the bill. "A lot of them, really," he said. "I can't name one that was not good to me. They were always answering any questions that I had. I respected all those guys and I still do today." McCowan said he hopes to drop into Lucas Oil Speedway and run weekly Modified programs next season, when his schedule permits. It seems fitting that the MLRA series opener, the 10th annual Spring Nationals, are at his home track on March 31-April 1. "I'm excited to run there, the first show of the MLRA schedule," he said. "We love running over there and seeing everybody. That's like home to me." McCowan thanks a long list of sponsors, including: Midwest Sheet Metal, Empire Energy, Pomeroy Services, Swift Springs, FastShafts, McCowan Farms, Rick Lowry Taxidermy, Ozark Motorsports Report, Hawk Fertilizer & Feed, Hawk Angus Farms, Wooderson Veterinary Clinic, Oak Star Bank, Don Howe Gravel & Dirt, Bud's Tire & Wheel, Specialty Risk Insurance, AD and Nancy McCowan, Joe's Hardware, Dobson Farms, Greg and Tina Day, Elusive Competition Engines, Midwest Wrap Co., and Mars Race Cars. He gave a special shout-out to his parents, Mindy and Charlie. "Without my Mom and Dad, I couldn't be living the dream today," he said. "I really am living the dream. This is what I've always wanted to do. We've put in a lot of hard work, but I wouldn't want to be doing anything else." - Lucas Oil Speedway Champions Spotlight: Ferris relishes first Late Model title with an eye on 2023
WHEATLAND, MO. (Nov. 30, 2022) - When Larry Ferris purchased a Capital Race Car before the 2021 season, the veteran Late Model driver from Nevada felt he had reached a career crossroads. "It was a game-changer," Ferris said of the new car. "To be honest, I figured I'd give it one more shot and if we couldn't run any better than we were, I was just gonna hang it up. We got that car and it totally changed our program and it totally changed everybody's attitude, especially mine. "I was tired of not running good," Ferris added. "It's so expensive and took so much time and work that it just wasn't worth it anymore to run fifth all the time." The car was, indeed, a game-changer. Ferris missed the first two Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series shows at Lucas Oil Speedway in 2021, but went on to win three features that season and finished fourth in points. He carried that momentum over to a big 2022 season, resulting in his first Late Model championship. Ferris won four times and was runner-up four other times in nine events. He finished 80 points in front of runner-up Tucker Cox in the Hermitage Lumber Late Model division for one of his most-memorable years in more than two decades of racing. "It feels good to get one, for sure," Ferris said of the Lucas Oil Speedway championship. "We've never really run for one. Last year we missed the first two races and had a pretty good year. I thought, shoot, with an effort to make everything we ought to have a pretty good chance this year. That's what happened." Ferris cruised into the Rempfer Memorial Season Championship Night on Aug. 27 with an insurmountable lead. Just by taking the green flag, he clinched the title. "It's got to be up there," Ferris said of where the season ranks among career highlights. "I won a track championship at North Fork Speedway in 1997 in a Modified. We had a really good year that year and this is right up there with that." The only downside came in the Lucas Oil MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial over Labor Day Weekend when motor issues relegated Ferris to a 14th-place finish. He said the motor was overdue for a freshening after back-to-back problem-free seasons and that's taking place this winter, along with routine maintenance on the rest of the car. All signs point toward making a run at a weekly series title defense next season on an expanded, 14-race Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series schedule. Lucas Oil Speedway also had a Fall Brawl spotlight the weekly Late Models tentatively set for Sept. 22-23. "That's the plan," Ferris said. "Danny (General Manager Danny Lorton) has got some more races scheduled and got some good races at the end of the year he's working on. That'll be great. It sounds like it's going to be a really good year over there." The Ferris team might expand in 2023. Larry has put together a USRA Modified that son Ryan Ferris might climb behind the wheel of next season. "We've got it done for the most part," Larry Ferris said. "Finding the time is gonna be the hard part. We're gonna try to have my boy run it more than anything. I think I'll let him play with that. I just don't have time to do it all. He's ready to get back in one and I think I'm more ready to help him as much as anything." With the success of the last couple of years in the Late Models, those thoughts of hanging up the helmet definitely are on hold. "I think we're still gonna hit it pretty hard, the next two or three years, anyway," Ferris said. Larry Ferris said his success couldn't have happened without help from some key contributors, including Ryan Ferris and Dave Collins helping out, Brian Larimore from Dirt Track Specialists, Josh Poe and Scott Bailey Racing Engines. "Scott takes great care of us if we ever need anything for the engine," Ferris said. "If we need help, he'll come down and help us. He's a major part of our program." - Harriett Chancellor named Forrest Lucas Lifetime Achievement Award winner at Lucas Oil Speedway postseason banquet
OSAGE BEACH, MO. (Nov. 19, 2022) - It was a night to pay tribute to the stars of the 2022 season while also recognizing a long-time major contributor to the regional racing scene during Saturday's Lucas Oil Speedway Championship Banquet at Margaritaville Lake Resort. Harriett Chancellor, co-owner of the Midwest Late Model Racing Association for 16 years, was named the sixth recipient of the Forrest Lucas Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to the sport on and off the track. Meanwhile, track champions in the four Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series divisions and the top 10 in points in each class were featured during the banquet. Track champions recognized were Dillon McCowan (Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifieds), Kris Jackson (Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), Larry Ferris (Hermitage Lumber Late Models) and Bryan White (O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars). McCowan also was named Most Popular Driver, determined through fan voting, for the second straight time. Ryan Gillmore, runner-up in the B-Mod points, won Best Appearing Race Car as determined by the GS Stanek Racing Photography and speedway staff. "We're proud to recognize our track champions and top 10 in points, plus the individual award winners after another terrific season," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said. "Congratulations to all who made it a great year and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2023." One of the highlights of the evening was the announcement of Chancellor, who along with her late husband Allen "Cowboy" Chancellor owned and operate the MLRA (Midwest Late Model Racing Association) from 1996-2012, as the Forrest Lucas Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Harriett and Allen met at the race track and purchased a Western Auto Racing parts van in the early 1980s and traveled to area tracks selling race-car parts, tires and fuel. They purchased the MLRA in 1996 and grew it into one of the nation's top regional dirt Late Model series with drivers such as Terry Phillips, Al Purkey, Bill Frye, Alan Vaughan and Billy Moyer becoming mainstays. The Chancellors were known for fairness across the board, with no favoritism and Harriett was not afraid to uphold the rules. Ernie Leftwich, who's now series director of the Lucas Oil MLRA, was a young official for the series at the time. He recalled when Frye tried to pass through tech with unapproved tires saying it was all he had available. Leftwich told Frye he would "have to take it up with the boss lady." Instead of letting it slide, Harriett sent him home as everyone was going to be treated the same. One of Harriett's biggest contributions was as a promoter and consultant to other tracks and even leasing tracks to give drivers and fans a place to enjoy the sport. Even in retirement, Harriett has remained active and not missed many nights at Lucas Oil Speedway, always willing to help in any way she can. Chancellor joins previous Forrest Lucas Lifetime Achievement Award winners Rex Merritt (2017), Jim Ruble (2018), Kevin Fletcher (2019), Kent Smith (2020) and Bill Allen (2021).
