- DILLON MCCOWAN SCORES EXCITING FIRST CAREER MLRA WIN AT CALLAWAY RACEWAY
Fulton, MO (June 7, 2024) - Dillon McCowan used some late race heroics and trackside experience, to overtake Earl Pearson Jr. late in the going to capture his first career Lucas Oil MLRA win on Friday at the Callaway Raceway in Fulton, MO. A total of 32 drivers checked in for the MLRA's first ever stop at Callaway, and they left fans with a great first showing from start to finish. Derrick Stewart started off the night by grabbing his first career My Race Pass "Fast Time Award" with a Group "B" lap time of 14.522. Heat race victories were recorded by Chris Simpson, Earl Pearson Jr., Stewart, and Kyle Beard. Qualifying issues left Pearson starting in the 8th and final position on the grid, but the Jacksonville, FL driver raced his way all the way to the win, capturing the nights Swift Springs "Move of the Race" in the process. The 30-lap feature would find Chris Simpson starting on the pole alongside of fellow Iowan Derrick Stewart. Simpson would take control from the drop of the green, until lap nine when Pearson used a consistent low line to take the lead away from Simpson as the duo worked off the exit of turn two. Pearson quickly found the backside of the 24-car field and had to navigate lapped traffic during the balance of the feature, all the while trying to keep Simpson and sixth starting Dillon McCowan in his rearview mirror. As the laps began to count down, McCowan continued to apply pressure on the top line of the speedway, pulling up alongside of the Lucas # 46 of Pearson multiple times in three and four before having his run brought to a halt by lapped traffic multiple times. The top two of Pearson and McCowan finally found clean race track with just under five laps to go, and with just three laps to go McCowan took advantage of a clean race track to drive by Pearson exiting turn four to grab the lead for the first time. McCowan would lead the final three circuits and go on to capture the $5,000 to win main event. The victory marks the first career Lucas Oil MLRA win for the series defending Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the Year winner. Pearson held on for his second MLRA runner-up finish of the year while Chris Simpson completed the podium trio. Gordy Gundaker would grab his second top five of the year in fourth while Stewart hung on for a fifth-place run, his best to date under the MLRA banner. Current point leader Chad Simpson finished in eighth, which allowed the points chase to tighten. Chris Simpson returns to second, only 15 points out of the Championship lead while Gundaker is now just 20 back of the four-time series champion Chad Simpson. McCowan commented on the battle with Pearson in saying, "It was definitely a hard-fought battle. That lapped traffic played a big big factor in it. It was breaking his run, but it was also breaking my run at the same time. I don't know if I call it a quick feature because it felt like an eternity in there the way we was running around there." The caution free 30 lapper went at a lightening pace, taking only 8:03 to run start to finish. "I was getting a run on the top there and I knew he was going to be glued to the bottom because it was definitely the fast way around the track," continued McCowan. "I would just get a good run and I'd hook it good through one and two and we would catch him down the back stretch and then I would have to whoa it up. Once we finally got clear of them (lapped traffic) I was like it's either going to be wreckers or checkers now, I didn't lift." Lucas Oil MLRA action continues on Saturday night June 8th at the Springfield Raceway in Springfield, MO with another $5,000 to win showdown. This will mark the MLRA's first trip to the ¼ mile facility since 2012 and just the 8th time in the series 36-year history. - LUCAS OIL MLRA DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND: CALLAWAY RACEWAY & SPRINGFIELD RACEWAY
Wheatland, Missouri (June 4, 2024) - It's a story of try again and welcome back, as the Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) roars back to life with another Show-Me state double header of action this upcoming weekend. After a rain plagued spring that has wiped out a total of nine MLRA events, the series will go into make-up mode this weekend in hopes of getting a pair of points paying events in the record books. "It has been a tough spring for getting races in, that's for sure," commented MLRA Series Director Ernie Leftwich. "Back in April we were all set for a great weekend of racing at Callaway and then at Lake Ozark Speedway for the annual "Battle at the Beach" until mother nature had other plans. I know promotor Kenny Brown had put a lot of work into making that entire weekend a success, unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts we just couldn't move the entire weekend like we had all hoped. So we've improvised to get our teams racing for the championship some races, and hope to get back to Lake Ozark again next year." Action this weekend will get started on Friday night June 7th with a stop off at the Callaway Raceway in Fulton, MO. This event was originally scheduled for April 26th before being a part of the washed-out weekend. This will be the MLRA's second try at a first ever visit to the Callaway Raceway with drivers chase after a $5,000 to win top prize. Described as a ¼ mile semi-banked bull ring oval, Callaway Raceway is located just north of Jefferson City, MO. "We are always excited to get into new territory and bring our teams to new tracks and race in front of new faces," commented MLRA director Ernie Leftwich. "It's been pretty evident through social media that there is a lot of excitement around bringing this race to Callaway, so we excited to be able to make it happen yet this season and looking forward to seeing our drivers battling it out this weekend." The following night, June 8th will bring a homecoming of sorts for the MLRA to the mighty Springfield Raceway, located just off I-44 in Springfield, MO. This $5,000 to win event was an addition to the MLRA schedule after the rash of spring rainouts to help round out the weekend with a double header for the traveling race teams. The MLRA's last visit to the ¼ mile semi-banked clay oval came back in 2012 with Brad Looney making the trip to victory lane. A total of seven MLRA events have been contested at the Springfield facility, with other winners including Jesse Stovall, Al Purkey, Terry Phillips, Jeremy Payne, and John Anderson. Anderson is the only multiple-time winner in series history. For track owner Jerry Hoffman, the return of the MLRA to Springfield has been a long time coming. "Having the MLRA is a big deal for us. I remember back when I was a kid 36 years ago, when Randy Mooneyham and Kenny Essary started the MLRA series. Ernie and myself have talked about doing this for several years, we just couldn't ever get the deal to work out, so it means a lot to me because this is the series that I grew up watching when I was a kid. To think that it's still around now after all these years is pretty remarkable." Many of the series current drivers have little to no experience at the Springfield track, so Hoffman is anxious to see if the local drivers have an advantage at a track that he describes as a ¼ mile that races like a fast 3/8. "It can for sure throw a curveball to a driver that has never been here before, because it races faster than you realize," explained Hoffman. Adding to its uniqueness' he comments, "It's one of those tracks that's not shaped real good. It's probably not shaped politically correct I guess you could say, but it races really good. The bottom is usually there, and we usually have a cushion up top that makes for multiple grooves of racing." A late addition to the MLRA schedule, Hoffman said that it's not easy trying to put together an event of this caliber on short notice, but that he was ready for the opportunity to get the MLRA back to Springfield and wanted to make sure it happened. "Chris and Jan Davis and their group at Midwest Sheet Metal are huge supporters of dirt track racing in our area, and we really appreciate them coming on board as presenting sponsors for this event. With this race not being on our original schedule this year it's taken some work in a short amount of time to make it happen, and we couldn't do it without people like them and Midwest Sheet Metal." - Lucas Oil Speedway takes this weekend off with action set to resume June 8th; POWRi Late Model makeup June 15th
WHEATLAND, MO. (May 28, 2024) - Following a busy Show-Me 100 weekend, Lucas Oil Speedway will take this weekend off before resuming the Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series on June 8th with a scheduling change. To work with other area tracks and sanctioning bodies to help support car counts, the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models will not be on the June 8th schedule. The Lucas Oil MLRA is racing that night at Springfield Raceway and Lake Ozark Speedway has a Cash Money Series event that night. "Those Late Model drivers who race with us weekly can attend those events can attend one of those events and support them also," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said. Lorton also announced that Mod Lites will be added to the June 8th event as a guest class, racing for $500 to win and $75 to start. The Clear Creek Golf Car USRA B-Mods will be the featured class that evening, running a 25-lap, $750-to-win main event. The Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds and O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars also will be in action. That will be a busy weekend at the speedway as it also marks the first appearance this season for the Kentucky Drag Boat Association on Lake Lucas. The KDBA Summer Thunder on Lake Lucas will be in action both June 8-9. Check out kydragboat.com for more on the series. POWRi Late Model makeup and Wells bounty: The Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models will return on June 15th and make up their rained out special from the Show-Me 100. The feature will run prior to the start of the regular racing program, going 30 laps for $2,000 to win. That evening's regular program also will be the first "bounty" on reigning track champion Justin Wells, who is 5-for-5 in POWRi Late Model features this season after winning 11 times in 2023. Lorton said the bounty will start at $500 to any drivrer able to beat Wells. Each week that the bounty doesn't get claimed, $100 will be added - June 15th ($500), June 22nd ($600), July 4th ($700), July 20th ($800) and July 27th ($900). "If no one claims the bounty in the five-week hunt, then Wells will receive the $900 bounty money which we will top it off with a extra $100 to make it a even $1,000 if he can outrun the bounty hunters," Lorton said. "These four races, the bounty has to be earned legally, the driver's car has to pass tech 100%, Justin has to have finished the race for it to be claimed. There also are some other schedule changes for the remainder of the season: Full Fender Challenge coming Aug. 17: With Central Missouri Speedway and I-70 Speedway both having Super Stock specials on July 27th, Lucas Oil Speedway will not run Super Stocks that night as they were added as a guest class. - Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Jason Pursley looks forward to Heartland Modified Tour visit to his home track
WHEATLAND, MO. (May 9, 2024) - It's pretty safe to say that Jason Pursley has made more laps around Lucas Oil Speedway - especially in a USRA Modified - than anyone else since the track opened in 2006. That is one reason Pursley feels he has at least a fighting chance when the new Heartland Modified Tour rolls into Wheatland for the first time as the headliner of Saturday night's Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series program. With $2,000 awaiting the winner of the Arctic Food Services USRA Modified feature, several United States Modified Touring Series stars likely will be on hand as the USMTS series is idle this weekend. Pursley said he always enjoys the challenge of going up against the best of the best in Modified racing. "It's basically gonna be a USMTS show," Pursley said of Saturday. "It was the same way a couple of weeks ago in Humboldt, for the season opener of the Heartland Tour. The USMTS was rained out and those guys show up. When they do, you know they're gonna be really, really tough to beat ... but they're a lot of fun to race with. "If you do happen to run well or beat the, you know that you've done something." A full night of action awaits as the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods, Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models and O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock cars also will be on the program. All Moms will be admitted free courtesy of Vietti Marketing Group. The Heartland Modified Tour came into being this year to provide a boost to weekly USRA Modified racers, who have seen a steady decline in car count over the last few years. Pursley said it's a welcomed opportunity to help the Modified division throughout the region as the HMT runs in conjunction with weekly programs at the tracks it visits. "I'm real excited about this new series," Pursley said. "The last few years, as the B Mods have grown and MW Mods and all the other Mod classes have come into fruition, the A Mods have kind of been struggling a little bit. I'm hoping this series makes for a little more interest in A Mods and helps the tracks that run A Mods." Pursley, knowing as the "Racing Superintendent" for his job as Superintendent of Hickory County R-1 Schools in Skyline, will have to sit out the first half of this weekend's doubleheader on Friday at Lebanon Midway Speedway. It's graduation night at Skyline High and figures his day job must take precedence. "The job pays a little more than racing, so I guess I'd better go and do my job," Pursley said with a laugh. But he's eager to fire it up on Saturday, hoping that a home-track advantage might help level the playing field against top competition. "If I'm going to have to race against those guys, I'd want it to be at Lucas just because I have so many laps there," he said. "The only USMTS race I almost won was at Lucas, when Jason Krohn ended up beating me and I ended up second. But I'm always excited to race against those guys, especially on my home turf." Pursley had a fifth-place feature run at Humboldt last month in the Heartland Tour opener, then had a second last weekend at Springfield Raceway finishing between USMTS regulars Terry Phillips and Tanner Mullens. While starts have been limited so far, he's ready to see how his nearly new MB Customs car owned by long-time car owner Tom Campbell fares this spring and summer. "Tom got this car last year and we raced it at USRA Nationals and a couple of times this year," Pursley said, noting the red wrap scheme has replaced his traditional blue one. "So far, we've really liked the car. It feels different than the old MB Customs car we had. The corner speed is a lot more than the other one. Any time you have more corner speed, you have more straightaway speed." With five career runner-up finishes in pursuit of a Lucas Oil Speedway track championship, Pursley said his season goals include winning the elusive championship on his home track and earning top-10 in Heartland Modified Tour points. "The Heartland series and Lucas only have about two conflicts, so I think we'll be able to run them both," he said. "So those are our goals and hopefully we can attaint them." This marks the second Weekly Championship Series program of the season at Lucas Oil Speedway after an April 27 rainout. Feature winners on April 20 were Robbie Reed (USRA Modifieds), Ryan Gillmore (USRA B-Mods), Justin Wells (POWRi Late Models) and Derek Brown (USRA Stock Cars). Pits open at 4 p.m. with grandstands at 4:30, hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05 p.m. Kids Power Wheel races at intermission: Round 2 of Kids Power Wheel Championship Series will be held during intermission with a 24V-36V class. Kids can bring their own battery-powered cars to the RCR Designs Jr Fan Club sign-in on the midway or drop them at the pit gates and they will be brought to the front stretch at intermission.
