- Hudson O'Neal Wins Lucas Oil Knoxville Late Model Nationals from 15th
KNOXVILLE, IA (September 20, 2025) - Hudson O'Neal charged from his 15th starting position to win the 21st Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals presented by All Makes Collision Center on Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway. The Martinsville, Indiana driver earned an event record $75,000 for his 34th career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win. In a race with nine lead changes among three drivers, O'Neal finally took the lead for good on lap 57 and then led the last 18 laps to win by 8.368 seconds over Ricky Thornton Jr., Devin Moran, Brandon Sheppard, and Daulton Wilson. Jonathan Davenport and Moran swapped the lead during the first 54 laps of the race, until O'Neal became the third different leader on lap 55. Moran led lap 56, and O'Neal took the lead for the second time on lap 57, then pulled away to dominate the rest of the race. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane, O'Neal becomes the 16th different winner in 21 editions of the crown jewel event. O'Neal and his father Don are the first father-son duo to win the race, with Don having won it in 2011. "I'm tired, man. Riding around that berm was so demanding; it got really rough down there, and I kept telling myself to just breathe. Hats off to my guys—whenever you destroy a race car like that, it definitely hurts. I put a lot of effort into that car to make it to the World 100; it was the car we planned to finish our championship with. That was definitely a morale killer a little bit, but we were able to unload the car the next day, and the guys worked hard to get it ready. To come back and have good speed last night was great—we had a mechanical failure, and to come from 15th is just so awesome," said the 2023 National Champion. "It's been a tough month, but we've been making progress step by step. We've received a lot of help from many different people, including my family and everyone watching back home. These races are so special—these are the ones you dream of adding to your list. This one is so cool. I knew I was really good, and when I was racing with Devin, I didn't feel like I was pushing my limits down there. They were having to run really hard on the track to keep up, and I figured they'd heat their tires and I could slip away from them," said the winner, who became the youngest driver to win the event at age 25. Thornton was the only driver in the top three finishers who did not lead a lap and came in second after passing Moran in the final four laps. "I went much tighter than I did last night; the track never really slowed down like it usually does here. I don't know if it was easier to run around the bottom berm; overall, I'm happy with second. Obviously, Hud was a lot better than all of us; he drove to the front and won by over 8 seconds or whatever it was. Congrats to him. I feel like any time it gets around a berm like that on the bottom, I remember, like at Pittsburgh a few years back, he wore us all out running below the berm. So again, congrats to him for tonight; after flipping on night one, it didn't scare him at all." Moran finished third on the Big River Steel Podium after leading 21 laps. "We just got that bottom to start chunking out a little, and when it did, my nose was just too low, and it kept bouncing and bouncing. I couldn't circle that bottom. Overall, we'll take it. I really felt like we had a really good car for a long part of that race. I could move all around, and JD was having an awesome race. It was so fun to race with him, but obviously Hudson was the best car tonight. At the end, he did a great job — my guys said he was a second faster per lap at the end of the race." The winner's SSI Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, Wheeler Metals, Triple O, Merrill Bonding Company, Sub Surface of Indiana, Professional Concrete, Cutting and Drilling, West Side Tractor Sales, Dyno One Inc., O'Neal's Salvage and Recycling, Indiana USSSA Fast Pitch Softball, Bob and Tammy Burton, Houchens Insurance Group, Bilstein Shocks, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Bob Cat of Batesville. Completing the top ten were Brian Shirley, Garrett Alberson, Dan Ebert, Tyler Erb, and Donald McIntosh. Thornton faced a tough challenge from Jonathan Davenport after a lap 90 caution when the top two in the series championship points made contact in a side-by-side battle. Thornton was able to pull away from Davenport in the final nine laps to win by 1.397 seconds. Max Blair, who started 13th, rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third after passing Devin Moran right before the final caution of the race. Moran finished fourth. Brandon Overton earned the Hoker Trucking Hard Charger of the Race as he finished fifth after starting 21st. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 55th time in his career, Thornton has now won three of the last four Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series presented by FloRacing events. "I am glad that the first yellow came out. I really didn't get a great start; I let JD get out in front of me. I felt like whoever got out front would be the one to beat, whether your car is better or not. We tried a bunch of different things today, and I felt we were a lot better. I still think we need to improve a lot once it finally cleans off, but overall, it was a really good night for us. You have to start the night off well with good qualifying, have a solid heat race, and a good start to the feature, said the Chandler, Arizona native who now resides in Indianola, Iowa. "I felt like I was kind of sliding myself into three and four, then they took away the top line, making it so I couldn't get out there where they could hail Mary around me. I got to traffic and felt almost better around the bottom, and I think you slow your pace down so much when you get to a lapped car, so I needed to stay down there. On that last restart, I felt like I got a decent restart; I saw JD under me and thought, alright, drive it in hard into one and slide myself, and I got a run off of two. By the time I heard him, it was already too late, and I was into him. Obviously, I know he was going to be mad; you definitely don't want to run a competitor off the track like that." Davenport was seeking his third career Hillbilly Hundred victory. He took home $15,000 for a second-place finish and gave his viewpoint on the lap 91 restart. "I got a pretty good restart, and I was planning to slide him when I got into one, but just like a few other times when I'd get a run on him, Thornton was going to come all the way to the bottom. So I was either going to crash us both or do something else, and I didn't want to do that. I moved back to the top and got a really good run. I doubt he saw me, but if he heard me, you know, whatever, he says he didn't. It is what it is; as he said, whoever gets out in front is going to be really hard to beat." Blair, who also finished third in the track's signature event, the Firecracker 100, in June, worked his way methodically to a podium finish after starting on the inside of row number seven. "I love this place when it gets slippery like that. I need to improve in the heat races so I can start a little higher than 13th. We were really strong at the end of the race, so congrats to Ricky — he's on a roll. It's getting down to crunch time in this championship, and it's cool to see him racking up all these wins. Hopefully, he can keep it up and go back-to-back." The winner's Koehler Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Ultimate Towing and Recovery, Hoker Trucking, Knight's Companies, Coltman Farms Racing, Elite Ready Mix, Capital Waste, Bilstein Shocks, Sunoco Race Fuels, EMD Wraps, and Certified Inspection Services. Completing the top ten were Mike Marlar, Carson Ferguson, Tim McCreadie, Brandon Sheppard, and Tyler Erb. - Alberson Starts Hillbilly Hundred Weekend with Friday Night Win at Lernerville
SARVER, PA (August 29, 2025) - Garrett Alberson took the lead at the start of Friday night's 40-lap, $10,000-to-win main event and never looked back. He first held off Ricky Thornton Jr. for the first four laps, then Jonathan Davenport for several laps, and finally Devin Moran for the last 13 circuits to earn his first-ever win at Lernerville Speedway on the opening night of the 57th Annual Hillbilly 100 Presented by Summit Racing Equipment. Alberson led all 40 laps to earn his fourth career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series presented by FloRacing victory. Moran moved from fifth to second on a lap 27 restart and finished just 0.852 seconds behind. Hudson O'Neal moved from seventh to secure a spot on the Big River Steel Podium by claiming third place. Tim McCreadie finished fourth, followed by Ricky Thornton, Jr., who made a late race charge to reach fifth after dropping as low as eighth in the running order at the checkers, maintaining his series points lead heading into Saturday's $30,000-to-win Hillbilly Hundred. Alberson, who finished fourth in the track's signature event, the Firecracker 100, went to Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the third time this season on Friday night. "My guys did such a good job. Big thanks to Vinny (Guiliani); he came in with us and helped us get our program back together. I just tried to be a driver tonight. I tried not to overthink it and let my instincts take over. Man, the car worked really well; the track was intense. I kinda wanted to straighten the car out a little here and there, but every time I tried to ease up on it, there was somebody right beside us," said the driver from Las Cruces, New Mexico native. "I kind of took a lane over there, and when you do that, you kind of try to break a guy's momentum. I hope I didn't crowd anybody too much. I just had to change the momentum a little bit and then get back to what I was doing, being a little more disciplined with what I was doing in three and four so I wouldn't lose my speed across the center. Man, this is awesome." Moran, who suddenly became a contender for the win after starting eighth, climbed to second following a lap 27 restart. "For the Firecracker, we had some bad luck, and I felt like our results didn't reflect our speed. Coming here, starting eighth and finishing second was awesome. Kudos to Garrett for running a great race. I thought I had a chance in one and two, and I stuck my nose out, but I probably shouldn't have. Once I did, he (Alberson) moved down for three or four laps, which messed up my momentum. They did a great job, and so did my team. We've been working really hard and had to fight through a lot of challenges this year. We've had a really great race car here the last couple of weeks," said the Dresden, Ohio native. O'Neal, who started alongside Moram in row four, finished in third place. "Yeah, the car was really good. We struggled for the last couple of weeks, but we were able to test yesterday, and I think it really helped us. We've been working to improve our balance on these bigger race tracks because we struggled a little when we came here for the Firecracker. However, we opened up the notebook, and it turned out to be a really good night for us."
