- Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Wing or not, Doney looks to keep rising at 14th annual Hockett-McMillin Memorial
WHEATLAND, MO. (Sept. 10, 2024) - One of the rising prospects of sprint-car racing is far too young to have seen Jesse Hockett impress in both the winged and wingless divisions of the sport. But Xavier Doney has heard plenty of stories about his fellow Missourian. Doney, an 18-year-old from Odessa, said one of his favorites is the one about Hockett starting a feature from tailback - apparently on a dare - at Double X Speedway in California, Mo. He drove around the field and into victory lane just making the paycheck and trophy celebration sweeter. And moreover, it didn't seem to matter which variety of sprint car Hockett drove prior to his passing at the age of 29. "I know he raced wing and non-wing and was good in both," Doney said of Hockett, who was from Warsaw. This week's 14th annual Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial offers Doney an opportunity to pay tribute to Hockett in the ultimate way. Doney, too, drives both styles of sprint cars with skill and will be one to watch in both the POWRi 410 Sprints and POWRi WAR in three nights of action starting on Thursday. The Hockett-McMillin Memorial recognizes the legacy of Hockett, who was a star in both the winged and non-wing sprint divisions when he lost his life in a shop accident in 2010. His cousin and crew chief, Daniel McMillin, was killed in an automobile accident in 2006. "I think it's a really cool event that honors Jesse Hockett and Daniel McMillin. It's one of the biggest events in the Midwest all year long," Doney said. "Lots of cars, lots of good, hard racing. This year they have the 410s which I'm excited to run that, because we've been fast there in the past with the wing on." Just last month at Lucas Oil Speedway, Doney drove to victory lane in his winged 410 at the POWRi Summer Thunder. He set fast qualifying time and led all 30 laps of the feature, holding off Ayrton Gennetten in the late going, for the $5,000 prize. This week, the stakes are higher. Preliminary-night features for the 410s will pay $3,000 to win Thursday and Friday before the $10,000 finale on Saturday. Meanwhile, Doney also will have his wingless sprint ready. He's finished second in that portion of the Hockett twice, including one year ago. There's a definite boost of confidence after the recent success, plus an eye-opening showing earlier in the summer as the Kubota High Limit series visited Lucas Oil Speedway. "At the High Limit race I ran fourth quick the second night in qualifying and unfortunately it got rained out," Doney said. "I know that I'm fast at Wheatland in the wing and non-wing, I just haven't got it done in the non-wing yet. We were second last year and second three years ago. So we just haven't quite been able to pull it off." Doney began racing quarter midgets when he was 6. He explains his fascination with the open-wheel style of racing began when the family went to a car show in Kansas City for his sixth birthday. Prior to that, it was made clear that he would not follow his dad's racing path. "My dad (Mike Doney) raced hare scrambles before I was born, on dirt bikes," Xavier said. "My mom thought dirt bikes were too dangerous. We went to World of Wheels show and had to take an elevator because they didn't allow strollers up the escalators and my little sister was with us. We went in the elevator and went up to the main floor of the car show and the door opened and the quarter-midget was sitting there. "I was in awe. I knew from then on that's what I wanted to do. For my sixth birthday, my dad got me a couple of quarter midgets and been racing since." Doney graduated to sprints four years ago and finished top-five in his first five winged features, at Lucas Oil Speedway and Lake Ozark Speedway. Lots of wins podium finishes have followed in both wings and non-wings. Doney not only drives, but helps build some of the fastest sprint cars around as a fabricator/welder at the renowned Schnee-Lawson Chassis in his hometown. And Xavier is not the only member of the family going fast on the dirt. Natalie, his 15-year-old sister who was in that stroller at World of Wheels, recently debuted in a 410 Sprint at Lake Ozark Speedway and made the A feature the second night of the two-night show, finishing 21st. "I thought she did pretty good. She beat a few regular 410 drivers, which is a feat on its own, especially being her first night out," Xavier said. "We're a really close family. We're all on the same race team and share information with each other. We're trying to grow (as a race team) at the same time." Fans who want to follow the Doney-Lawson Race Team can look for winged car No. 74 (Xavier) and 74N (Natalie). - CHRIS SIMPSON CHARGES TO OPENING NIGHT WIN IN 10TH ANNUAL RON JENKINS MEMORIAL
Wheatland, MO (August 30, 2024) - After giving up ground on a tight MLRA championship battle one week ago, Chris Simpson made a statement on Friday night that he was not going away quietly, by scoring the opening night win in the 10th Annual Ron Jenkins Memorial at the Lucas Oil Speedway. Making it even sweeter for the Oxford, IA driver is the fact that it was his first career MLRA feature win at the Diamond of Dirt tracks after numerous prior podium finishes. Late afternoon rain shows made for a busy couple of hours for track crews to get the track into racing condition. In MyRacePass qualifying it was youngster Kayden Clatt grabbing his first career Fast Time with a lap of 15.914 seconds, which also netted him a $500 bonus in memory of Ron Jenkins. Jeff Herzog and Billy Moyer Sr. led the field to the green for the 30-lapper, with Herzog seizing control on lap one, and only before a pair of cautions slowed the pace in the early laps. In the early going Herzog opened up a 1.713 second advantage over the field as he approached the tail end of the 28-car starting field. While Herzog was setting the pace, it was 9th starting Chris Simpson making the noise, and putting himself into the runner up spot by lap 7. Back-to-back cautions on laps 8 and 9 bunched up the field, and this time it would be Simpson powering to the race lead on lap ten with a strong run exiting the bottom side of turn two. Simpson was able to slowly stretch out the advantage with the 45-time MLRA winner Moyer starting to close ground around the high line of the speedway. The final two cautions of the night would wave on laps 15 & 18, but Simpson was able to drive away from the field in the closing laps to score his 17th career MLRA victory and first since April of last year at the Lake Ozark Speedway. Simpson collect a $5,000 pay day plus a $2,000 bonus from Mary Jenkins Holt in Memory of Ron Jenkins, the builder of the original Wheatland Raceway. Billy Moyer 2nd (Left), Chris Simpson 1st (Center), Tony Jackson Jr. 3rd (Right) Todd Boyd Photo "I didn't know how the track was going to be," commented Simpson. "They got a lot of rain today right before the races started, and that bottom was so greasy in our heat races so we couldn't even touch it you know, so we had to just run the middle there. It was a good track, and I had to move up there at the end. My crew guy Chad (Simondsen) told me Moyer was coming on the top, so I moved up and just kind of sailed from there." Simpson who finished 4th in the Cowboy Classic early in the season continued in saying, "When I was here for the show me—this is the same car and same set up. One and two held on a lot longer, and three and four started shining up on entry a little and you really had to hit it right just to make it work. I kind of figured if that top would get burnt in that somebody would be coming, but once I got by Herzog there I kind of had open track to move around. The win allowed Chris Simpson to close the gap on the championship battle, with Chad Simpson clinging to a 15-point advantage with just 11 races remaining. "This points chase is pretty tight, so me and my brother are probably going to put on a hell of a show to end it," noted the feature winner. Moyer was happy with his second place run and noted of his new ride, "Tonight was the first time I've been in this thing, so we were guessing on a lot of things, but Cory and them guys give us a lot of help on some stuff. Now we have a night under our belt so we can work on it a little bit and hopefully make it a little bit better." The podium run for Jackson was his best MLRA finish of the season and second consecutive top five in his new Longhorn Chassis. After starting 8th on the grid he said, "We kind so struggled there early, I didn't know if it was the track or me because the car is new. But I had a really good car there in the feature and we were able to make it up through there." Night number two of the 10th Annual Ron Jenkins Memorial continues on Saturday night at the Lucas Oil Speedway. The MLRA will take the track in a 50-lap main event that has been bumped to $12,000 to win thanks to a $2,000 added bonus from Mary Jenkins Holt in memory of Ron Jenkins.
