- Henry, Miller, Valenti continue to roll at Fremont Speedway
FREMONT, Ohio - Cap Henry held off several challenges Saturday, June 7 at Fremont Speedway Presented by Gill Construction on Vision Quest Night to score his second 410 sprint win of the season at "The Track That Action Built." Henry, a former Fremont track champion, took the lead of the 30-lap Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint A-main from Nate Dussel on lap five then held off challenges from eighth place starter Kasey Jedrzejek and Zeth Sabo to take earn his 23rd career win at the track. Jedrzejek, who crashed hard the previous night at Limaland Motorsports Park challenged Henry many times and also had to hold off Sabo to earn second with DJ Foos and last week's Fremont winner Brock Hallett rounding out the top five. Earlier in the night Jedrzejek put a halt to Henry's fast times in qualifying - he had five in a row to open the year - earning a $570 bonus. For Henry, the win was his fifth overall in 2025 having also scored three wins at Attica Raceway Park. He also added to his point lead in the chase to repeat as the champion of the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series Presented by the Baumann Auto Group. "It was pretty hard to pass. The first green flag run I felt pretty good and the second one I knew I wasn't making good enough time but didn't know what to do. We got that last caution (with 11 laps to go) I could tell guys were running the bottom and I looked over my shoulder and saw Kasey running the bottom so that confirmed I needed to run the bottom. I tried to execute as good as I could. I was a little unsure. The car was good. We put a new engine in this week that Gary (Griffith) did for us and we had to figure some quirks out at Attica but I'm really happy," said Henry beside his Premier Planning Service, Jeff Ward Demolition, Ohio Logistics, Primal Tee Shop, Innovative Excavating, Elliott's Custom Trailers and Carts, FK Rod Ends, King Racing, Griff's Engines; Berryman Racing Shocks, Callie's Performance Products, Dyers, Power Cool Manufacturing, SCS Gearbox, Tony Elliott Foundation backed #33W. Defending Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint track champion Jamie Miller showed patience pays off. The Fremont, Ohio driver took the lead from Brenden Torok on lap 17 of the 25-lap affair and drove to his third victory of the year at Fremont, the 55th career win at the track. Miller, who has four wins at Attica Raceway Park as well, has not finished out of the top three all season at Fremont. Torok, who lead laps 1-16, settled for second ahead of last week's winner Matt Foos, Jimmy McGrath and Steve Rando. Miller adds to his lead as he looks to repeat as the champion of the Real Geese Decoys/Real Capz Attica Fremont Championship Series. "I was just back there pacing myself, felling the track out. I could see the bottom was really good if I could run the tires without running them over. The race went on and the fuel burned off and I trunked the wing and kept getting better and better," said Miller beside his Boca Construction, JLH General Contractors, Kenny Kolb Farms, Tuck Pointing America, Queen of Clean, Smitty's Pizza, Roberts & Sons Contracting, Pizza Wheel, Crown Battery, Pub 400., Reedtown Tavern, Fostoria Mod Shop, Sandy's Dad, Gressman Powersports, Phil Rister, Slade Shock Technology backed #26. Fostoria, Ohio's Shawn Valenti held off opening season winner Kent Brewer to score his fifth straight feature win in the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks. In fact, after running second to Brewer on opening night, Valenti has remained undefeated. Valenti's win - the 87th of his career at Fremont to stand atop the track's all-time win list - was even more special as his truck owner Jeff Bacock was inducted prior to the night's racing into the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame. Brewer, Jamie Miller, Keith Sorg and Dustin Keegan rounded out the top five. "I got the lead early but wasn't sure where to be. I think my best lap was after the checkers. I have to thank Jeff Babcock for everything he's done for me and it was an awesome day to stand up here and get his award earlier," said Valenti beside his Craig Miller Trucking, Conrad Transportation, Dave Story Equipment, A Plus Auto Center, Smolders Speed Concepts, S&S Hauling and Excavating #7B. Fremont Speedway will be back in action Wednesday, June 18 as part of the 43rd annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek with the NAPA Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions Presented by Valvoline. - Three-Time Champ, Stambaugh Earns Third Lima Win of 2025 with GLSS
LIMA, OH - The Ohio CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP showed up to a version of Limaland Motorsports Park that produced intense racing throughout the entire night. After four different leaders of the race, Elida, Ohio native, Max Stambaugh found GLSS victory lane for the third time this season at his home track. Corbin Gurley and Luke Griffith led the field to green in the setting sun Friday night after a day filled with overcast skies and moments of drizzly rain. Gurley jumped out and led the first lap, but a hard-charging Jared Horstman came from sixth to take the lead on lap two. While Horstman raced away quickly to lapped traffic, the battle raged on for third through sixth as Phil Gressman, Kasey Jedrzejek, and Max Stambaugh all argued for realestate around the track. While that was going on, Horstman slapped the wall down the backstretch while trying to set-up a pass on lapped traffic, which allowed Gurley to chase down the two-time GLSS Champion. As Gurley was setting up the pass, the right front tire went down entering turn one and Horstman's No.17 came to a stop at the top of turn two. A trip to the work area to change the tires brought Horstman back onto the race track. On the restart, Gurley and Gressman raced hard for the lead, and it proved to be important as Jedrzejek was challenging for the lead entering turn three and clipped the opening in the wall to exit the track. While his No.11N didn't flip, the damage ended Jedrzejek's night. The leader at the last completed lap was Gressman. With 14 laps to go, Gressman brought the field back to life. Stambaugh made his move around Gurley to take the second spot as Gressman was catching lapped traffic. With five laps to go, Stambaugh and Gressman exchanged lanes on the track like trading cards. Finally, Stambaugh got to Gressman's inside in traffic and officially took the lead with two laps to go. Carving his way through traffic, Stambaugh opened up his advantage and held on to collect his third win at Limaland and fourth of the season. Gressman held on to second, Gurley third, Noah Dunlap fourth, and Dustin Daggett fifth. "First off, Horstman was on a roll," Stambaugh said in victory lane. "We got her trucking so I didn't lift, I can promise you that. We might have got her a little hot tonight, but this is my third win at Lima this year - you dream about [stuff] like this as a little kid." - Stambaugh wins GLSS Kahle Memorial at Limaland
The Ohio CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP showed up to a version of Limaland Motorsports Park that produced intense racing throughout the entire night. After four different leaders of the race, Elida, Ohio native, Max Stambaugh found GLSS victory lane for the third time this season at his home track.
- Great Lakes Super Sprints Head for Limaland and Lawrenceburg
Merrill, MI - The Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP (GLSS) are geared up for a doubleheader weekend with a pair of events for the Ohio CAT division this Friday and Saturday night. The action begins Friday at Limaland Motorsports Park for the Ron Kahle Jr. Memorial before heading down to Lawrenceburg Speedway for the loan stop in southern Indiana this season. The first three races at Limaland have seen just two different winners so far. Hometown driver and three-time and defending GLSS Champion, Max Stambaugh, took the first two appearances at Limaland with wins on May 2nd for the Ohio CAT Division opener and then again on Saturday, May 16th during the Run for the Rabbit, Stambaugh's first. On May 23rd, Kasey Jedrzejek made his first appearance of 2025 with GLSS and made it count, holding off a hard-charging Nate Dussel, on his way to victory lane for the first time this season. In 2024, Lawrenceburg Speedway hosted nearly 30 cars in the first-ever visit for GLSS. Jedrzejek set fast time in the final group of qualifying turning in a 13.371. Some top names in 360 Sprint Car racing had to come through a B-Main, including Randy Hannagan, Phil Gressman, and Jared Horstman. In the A-Main, Danny Sams III, who started fourth, trailed Jedrzejek through the early part of the race, which saw several cautions on a technical race track. Jedrzejek and Sams were nearly involved in their own caution when they collided in turns three and four while working lapped traffic. The hit, which was significant, flattened Jedrzejek's tire and resulted in a solo spin in turn two. Sams went on to collect the win over Stambaugh and Hannagan, who was the hard charger, gaining 15 spots. The Championship battles are good entering the month of June. In the Ohio CAT division, Stambaugh holds a 65-point advantage over fellow Ohio driver Horstman, and a 68-point advantage over the most recent GLSS winner, Devon Dobie. Meanwhile, the battle to become and overall Tour Champion is tight. Just three points separate Stambaugh from Horstman entering the weekend. Tickets for Friday's event at Limaland Motorsports Park are available at the gate on raceday. Advanced tickets for Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday are available online at www.GreatLakesSuperSprints.com. Fans who can't make it to the track can catch all the action online at www.GreatLakesSprints.Tv.
- Brayden Clark wins BOSS vs GLTS at Limaland
Brayden Clark won a wild 25 lap BOSS vs GLTS sprint car feature Friday night at Limaland Motorsports Park over Korbyn Hayslett, Shawn Westerfeld, Saban Bibent and Brian Ruhlman.
- Dobie Dominates Waynesfield Sunday for Great Lakes Super Sprints Win
Waynesfield, OH - The Field of Speed played host to the Ohio CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP on Sunday night and speed was the name of the game as Devon Dobie outlasted the field for the second GLSS sanctioned win of his career. With 22 cars on the property, Dobie had a full field of heavy hitters to contend with on Sunday afternoon. A fast-paced program put the 25-lap main event on the track while the sun was still over the tree tops in northwestern Ohio, which could have played a factor throughout the race. Dobie led the field to green alongside Brian Sebetto and jumped out to a quick lead. Much like Friday night's show, as the field would make it to lapped traffic, a caution would fall, stunting the progress of Sebetto and Kasey Jedrzejek, who tailed Dobie. A few single-car incidents slowed the field throughout the night, but the biggest issue was on lap six when Chase Dunham and Keith Sheffer, Jr came together on the frontstretch and sent Dunham flipping down the frontstretch. Dunham was ok but his night came to an end. Sheffer was able to continue. Restarts weren't a problem for Dobie who mixed up his launch points and kept Sebetto on his toes. The final restart of the race came with just three laps to go and it was a non-issue for Dobie who held on for his first win of the season. Sebetto took second ahead of Jedrzejek, Max Stambaugh, and Jared Horstman. "Coming up on 10 years that we won our first 360 feature here," Dobie explained. "It's always special to race here anyway, but any chance we get to race here is usually special in front of a home town crowd. The track was absolutely amazing all night tonight. Traffic here is tough, it's so narrow, the sun was actually really blinding coming through the middle of three and four, so you couldn't see great coming off of four. But you know you can't slow down too much with guys like Brian Sebetto behind you." The next event for the Great Lake Super Sprints is Friday and Saturday, June 6th and 7th with stops at Limaland Motorsports Park on Friday, June 6th and Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday, June 7th. - Jedrzejek Jump Starts 2025 with GLSS Win at Limaland
Lima, OH - Although Mother Nature did her best to ruin the Memorial Day Weekend of racing for the Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP, all she did was create a thrilling Limaland Motorsports Park on Friday night for the Memorial Cup. A total of 25 cars rolled into the Speedway on a cool Friday night. Once the preliminaries were settled, Jared Horstman and Kasey Jedrzejek led the 20 car field to green ahead of a 25 lap contest. Jedrzejek was able to use the outside starting spot to his advantage taking the lead from Horstman down the backstretch. Horstman refused to lay over easily, though, throwing a huge slider in three and four. Jedrzejek crossed him over and led the opening lap. Seven laps later, the red flag was displayed when Jac Nickles' No.31 flipped into the catch fence down the backstretch, tagging a passing Dustin Daggett in the process. Nickles, while unharmed, was finished for the night. Daggett attempted to repair his No.85 in the work area but couldn't get the car back together in time to rejoin the field. The red was timely for Jedrzejek, who was in heavy lapped traffic and being tracked down by Horstman. On the restart, Jedrzejek pulled away from Horstman again, but the battle was around the fifth spot. Nate Dussel, who started seventh, moved up to third on the restart while Phil Gressman, Zeth Sabo, and Ryan Coniam battled for the top five. Just after the halfway mark, as the No.11N was again reaching lapped traffic, Mike Keegan was turned head-on into the outside wall and collected Caleb Helms in the process. Keegan's night was done, and Helms continued after a visit to the work area. With 7 laps to go, Horstman attempted to slide Jedrzejek for the top spot in turns one and two but couldn't complete the pass. Dussel capitalized and made the move for the second spot while trying to reel in the leader. Dussel couldn't close and instead had to defend Horstman for second in the closing laps. Jedrzejek picked up the win, his first of the season, Dussel second, then Horstman, Stambaugh, and Sabo. "I seen Jared poking his nose on the bottom a couple times," Jedrzejek said in Victory Lane. "Even there at the end of the race, I seen somebody in three and four. Lapped traffic was a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be going into the feature. The way the track was, it was just so dominant on the top it was hard to beat it." The win is Jedrzejek's first of the season and his seventh all-time with GLSS. Jedrzejek also won Engler Machine & Tool Heat Race Number One. Devon Dobie won Howard Johnson of Lima Heat Race Number Two. Max Stambaugh won Miami Paint Heat Race Number Three. Phil Gressmon was the Ti22 Performance Fast Qualifier. The next event for the Great Lakes Super Sprints is Sunday, May 25th at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, OH. The originally scheduled event at Millstream for Saturday, May 24th has been cancelled. Ohio CAT A Feature 1 (25 Laps): 1. 11N-Kasey Jedrzejek[2]; 2. 1-Nate Dussel[7]; 3. 17-Jared Horstman[4]; 4. 71H-Max Stambaugh[1]; 5. 29-Zeth Sabo[5]; 6. 6-Ryan Coniam[8]; 7. 01-Bryan Sebetto[10]; 8. 7C-Phil Gressman[3]; 9. 5M-Steve Irwin[12]; 10. 66-Chase Dunham[14]; 11. 23-Devon Dobie[6]; 12. 49T-Gregg Dalman[15]; 13. 11G-Luke Griffith[18]; 14. 37-Noah Dunlap[20]; 15. 40X-Caleb Helms[17]; 16. 24-Kobe Allison[16]; 17. 88N-Frank Neill[19]; 18. - Tripleheader Weekend on Tap for Great Lakes Super Sprints
Merrill, MI - The Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP are geared up for a tripleheader weekend as summer unofficially begins with Memorial Day Weekend. The best 360 sprint car drivers in the Midwest will converge on Limaland Motorsports Park Friday, Millstream Speedway Saturday, and Waynesfield Raceway Park on Sunday. The third appearance this season at Limaland Motorsports Park opens the door for someone to try and take down the three-time and defending GLSS Champion, Max Stambaugh. The Smith Motorsports No.71H found Victory Lane in dominating fashion in the first two visits of the season after starting on the front row and leading every lap. Dustin Daggett and Mike Keegan eyed Stambaugh in the May 2nd contest, while Jared Horstman and Chase Dunham chased Stambaugh during last Friday night's contest. Millstream Speedway is set to host the Ohio CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints on Saturday night for the first race in Findlay, Ohio this season. On the historic 4/10ths mile oval, GLSS teams will try to navigate the fast track for just the second time in history. In October of 2024, Zane DeVault launched from the pole in his Lane Racing No.44 alongside Phil Gressman. DeVault went on to hold off Kasey Jedrzejek and Van Gurley, Jr for the win. Alongside GLSS on Saturday, the Great Lakes Traditional Sprints Presented by MacAllister CAT will also be in action - this will be the first time GLTS has contested an event on the 4/10ths mile at Millstream. Ricky Lewis held off Korbyn Hayslett in August of 2024 on the inside track for the first GLTS win at Millstream. Sunday, "The Field of Speed" welcomes GLSS for the first time in 2025. Waynesfield Raceway Park hosts the first event of the 2025 season on Sunday with the high-flying GLSS alongside DIRTcar UMP Modifieds and Dirt Pro Trucks. In three visits last season, Jedrzejek outdualed Dustin Daggett for the win in July, Gressman found victory lane in August, and Nate Dussel went to GLSS Victory Lane in October. - Stambaugh Wires Run for the Rabbit at Limaland
Lima, OH - For the third time this season, Max Stambaugh went wire-to-wire with the Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP, and for the second time this year he was crowned a winner with the Ohio CAT Division at Limaland Motorsports Park. Stambaugh, who was originally set to roll off third for the 2025 Run for the Rabbit Memorial event, was able to slide to the front row after a penalty was handed out to the original pole. Stambaugh led the field to green alongside two-time Run for the Rabbit and GLSS Champion, Jared Horstman. The only two drivers to win so far this season were the class of the field once again. With heavy storms breathing down the neck of fans and drivers, Stambaugh quickly reached lapped traffic with well over a straightaway lead on Horstman, who was forced to deal with a pesky Devon Dobie and Chase Dunham early for the second spot. Once Horstman shook Dunham and Dobie he was able to chase down Stambaugh in lapped traffic. With five laps to go, no cars separated the pair at the front. Horstman was able to draw within two car lengths of Stambaugh in the final two laps, but couldn't get close enough to make a move on Stambaugh. The Smith Motorsports No.71H went on to collect the win over Hortstman Dunham, Dobie, and Dustin Daggett. The win, Stambaugh's third of the season, is the 21st of his career and keeps him third on the all-time GLSS wins list. Stambaugh now takes a 55-point advantage in the Ohio CAT Division Championship lead, and a slim two-point advantage over Horstman for the GLSS Tour Championship lead. Chase Dunham earned the Ti22 Performance Fast Qualifier Award. Chase Dunham won Engler Machine & Tool Heat Race Number 1. Max Stambaugh won Howard-Johnson of Lima Heat Race Number 2. Kobe Allison won Miami Paint Heat Race Number 3. Luke Griffith was the Operating Engineers 324 Hard Charger advancing eight positions from 15th to 7th. The next event for the Great Lakes Super Sprints is back at Limaland Motorsports Park on Friday, May 23rd, before heading to Millstream Speedway on Saturday, May 24th, and Waynesfield Raceway Park on Sunday, May 25th. - "Run for the Rabbit" Returns to Limaland Friday with Great Lakes Super Sprints
Lima, OH - The Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP (GLSS) are set to return to Ohio this Friday night for the annual "Run for the Rabbit" at Limaland Motorsports Park. A staple on the Limaland calendar, the "Run for the Rabbit", a tribute race honoring the memory of the late Travis "The Rabbit" Miller, enters the 26th season in 2025 and second season under the GLSS banner. The "Run for the Rabbit" has seen 15 different winners since the first event in 2000. Tim Allison won the event in 2000 & 2002, with Mike Brecht being crowned the 2001 champion. Rainouts in 2003 and 2004 delayed the next installment of the race to 2005, where Greg Wilson went to Victory Lane. Brecht earned his second Rabbit win in 2006 before 2017 Great Lakes Super Sprints Champion, Phil Gressman, earned his win in 2007. JR Stewart collected his first of two Rabbit wins in 2008 before earning his second eight years later in 2016. Rob Cheney earned a win in 2009 and Butch Schroeder in 2010. The all-time "Run for the Rabbit" race winner, Randy Hannagan, earned his first in the 10th running of the race in 2011; he then went on to win in 2013, 2015, and 2018. Ronnie Blair took home the honors in 2012, it was Shawn Dancer in 2014, and 2018 GLSS champion, Dustin Daggett, earned the win in 2017. Two-time GLSS Champion, Jared Horstman grabbed his first Rabbit win in 2019 and again in 2022. Harli White and Tylar Rankin grabbed their first Rabbit wins in 2021 and 2023, and Jac Nickles earned his first career sprint car win during the "Run for the Rabbit" in 2024. GLSS drivers are headed back to Limaland for the second time this season, after hometown driver, Max Stambaugh put on a clinic two weeks ago for his first Limaland win with GLSS. Stambaugh now leads the Ohio CAT Division Championship by 15 points over regional champion, Daggett. The GLSS Tour, however, paints a different picture. A pair of wins in the Mitten State have elevated Horstman to the top of the Championship pedestal and to the top of the all-time wins list with 27. The 23rd running of the Run for the Rabbit is Friday, May 16th at Limaland Motorsports Park. Tickets are available at the gate on race day. Pits open at 4:30 PM, General Admission at 5:00 PM and racing is set to begin at 7:30 PM. Fans who can't make the trip can watch the event live at www.GreatLakesSprints.Tv. - Horstman, Thiel, Stambaugh, Worth the Price of Admission Friday at I-96 Speedway
Lake Odessa, MI - Anytime that 27 Michigan CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP unload at the track, fans can expect a fantastic program. Friday night, I-96 was in rare form, and the battle for the win was worth the price of admission. Jared Horstman, who opened the 2025 season with a win at Crystal Motor Speedway on Saturday, April 19th, brought the field to green alongside the most recent winner of the last two GLSS shows, Max Stambaugh, for the 25 lap, $2,500 to win main event. Just as quickly as the race started, it was halted when a pair of Ohio drivers, Chase Dunham and Phil Gressman, met in the middle of the inside and outside rows as they hit the throttle. The result was a destroyed No.66 for Dunham after he tumbled at least two times down the front stretch and collected Mike Keegan and Aaron Shaffer in the process. Gressman's No.7C suffered damage as well. The second attempt to start the race went better, technically; but not much. When the field reached turn one, Keith Sheffer, Jr's No.14 stepped around on him from the fourth spot, simultaneously, Ryan Conium's No.6 collided with Eli Lakin's No.70 outside the top 10. Conium went for a massive tumble off the end of the race track. Meanwhile, Sheffer collected Gressman with a huge hit that nearly sent Gressman tumbling. After a lengthy clean-up, the third start was money. Max Stambaugh jumped out to the early lead while Horstman slid into second with Scotty Thiel in third ahead of Dustin Daggett. Another caution waved when Jac Nickles did a 360 in turn two and nearly drove out of it when he was clipped by Gregg Dalman and forced to stop on the backstretch. On the restart, Stambaugh held the lead but not without challenge. Horstman nearly took the lead on the outside in turn two but lost the top of the race track and was forced to fall back in line until the leaders hit heavy lapped traffic. With crossed flags showing, Horstman was credited with the lead at the halfway mark, but again blew it over the cushion in turn two and allowed Stambaugh and Thiel to drive away. Four laps later, Thiel took the top spot around the outside of Stambaugh in turns three and four. A lap later, deja vu; Thiel jumped the turn two cushion and lost the lead to Stambaugh as Horstman pulled back in for second. Into turn three that same lap, Horstman threw a slider for the lead and never looked back as Stambaugh tried to hang on to second but relinquished the position to Thiel by the end of the night. With the win, Jared Horstman now becomes the winningest driver all-time with the Great Lakes Super Sprints sitting at 27 and nine wins at I-96 Speedway alone. "This is awesome," Horstman said in Victory Lane. "I knew we had a good car. Slipping it off of turn two twice, I just stepped on it. To stick after it, and a couple of mistakes from the other guys, [I] was able to capitalize." With the win, Horstman now matches Stambaugh with a pair of wins on the Tour in the first four races and leapfrogs the defending champion for the Tour Championship Points lead by 15 points. Meanwhile, Horstman opens up a 62 point gap in the Michigan CAT Division. The next event for the Great Lakes Super Sprints is Friday, May 16th at Limaland Motorsports Park for the annual Run for the Rabbit. Fans who can't make the trip can catch the action on GreatLakesSprints.Tv. Follow the Great Lakes Super Sprints on Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, and YouTube. - I-96 Speedway Next for GLSS; Doubleheader weekend for GLTS Opener
Lake Odessa, MI - The Michigan CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP (GLSS) are back in Michigan Friday night, returning to I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, MI for a Breast Cancer Awareness/Mother's Day Weekend that also features the Great Lakes Traditional Sprints Presented by MacAllister CAT as they open the 2025 season with a doubleheader that also features a stop in Quincy, MI at Butler Motor Speedway. The fourth race for GLSS in as many weeks takes teams back to one of the fastest tracks on the circuit for the second time this season. In the first visit on April 25th, Scotty Thiel set fast time with a 13.813 as one of the later cars to take time. Mike Keegan, Jared Horstman, and Max Stambaugh grabbed heat race wins before Stambaugh went on to lead flag-to-flag for his first win of the season. Stambaugh doubled up his 2025 win total by grabbing another Friday night win at Limaland Motorsports Park on May 2nd. Thanks to his back-to-back wins, Max Stambaugh now holds a slim two-point advantage in the GLSS Tour Points standings over Jared Horstman and Dustin Daggett. However, in the Michigan CAT Division, a DNF to open the season keeps Hortsman out front with a 43 point advantage over Daggett and Stambaugh. Horstman was on the move in the last race at I-96, taking second at the line after starting fifth. He was also credited as the Hard Charger at Limaland Motorsports Park. The evening at I-96 will also feature the start of the 2025 season for GLTS. Steve Irwin is expected to return after another championship-winning season with GLTS in 2024. The Fenton, MI native grabbed one win last year in the season opener at Butler Motor Speedway before finishing in the top 10 in the rest of his starts, and top five in all but one. Brian Ruhlman and Max Frank, two of the historic thorns in Irwin's side, are also expected to unload their non-wing 410s on Friday night. Last season, Max Frank was the one to beat with three feature wins, one of just two drivers to win multiple times with GLTS. Frank found victory lane at Tri City Motor Speedway and Silver Bullet Speedway twice. Ricky Lewis was the other driver who took multiple trips to GLTS victory lane with a win at Waynesfield Raceway Park and Millstream Speedway. The weekend begins on Friday, May 9th at I-96 Speedway for both GLSS & GLTS. Advanced tickets are available at GreatLakesSprints.com. Gates open at 5:00 PM with racing set to begin at 8:00 PM. Fans who can't make the trip Friday night can catch all the action live at GreatLakesSprints.Tv. Saturday, the Great Lakes Traditional Sprints continue to Butler Motor Speedway alongside Winged 410 Sprint Cars and Compacts. Gates open at 4:00 PM with racing set to begin at 7:30 PM.
- High School Dirt Racing in Ohio
Earning a varsity letter in highschool is something a lot of kids experience. Usually it's earned in Football, Band, Cross Country, Basketball, etc. Now, students in Southern Ohio have a chance to earn a varsity letter in dirt track racing. Yes, you read that right. A varsity letter in dirt track racing. Atomic Speedway, just south of Chillicothe, Ohio is working on the SMART Mod program, which will give high school students access to everything related to dirt track racing. The kicker? They'll be going up against other local high schools for all the bragging rights in what is a first-of-its-kind program in the United States. "For a couple years now, this idea has been blossoming," said Charlie Vest, Owner of Atomic Speedway. "My cousin is a superintendent, so I've been running liability ideas off of him. Finally, we got to the point where we had a plan and this program came together. Everybody who races knows that you learn every day; you're always trying to get faster, being creative with your setups. So why wouldn't we teach these kids early on that regardless of what you're doing in life, you're always going to be learning something?" Vest has wanted to get the kids involved in racing in Southern Ohio since buying Atomic Speedway a few years ago. He has plans to build a kids track behind the 3/8ths mile oval to give the kids a place to race. In most areas, kids have decent access to go-kart tracks or quarter midget tracks, but it's more of an anomaly in Southern Ohio. Giving these kids, the future of the sport, an opportunity to learn about racing and be involved in racing-behind the wheel of a race car or not- is one of the main goals of the SMART Mod program. What is the SMART Mod Program? Atomic Speedway has purchased a handful of Sport Mod cars, which will be housed in local racers shops, detuned, and with all the top-notch safety features, including STIDA Insurance. The cars are all built the same with the same motors, tires, and suspension components, so no school has a clear-cut advantage. Every student that is interested in being on the team will be able to hop in the iRacing simulator, where Charlie will help determine, based off of lap times, who will be on the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Reserve teams. The students with the best lap times will be eligible to be the primary driver, or the reserve driver. The unique part is, even if a student is on the team for PR or design purposes, they still get simulator time, and could end up behind the wheel of the actual car. Charlie is working directly with schools to develop a curriculum that benefits both the students, and the schools. Charlie has also talked to the University of Northwestern Ohio [UNOH], a college in Lima, Ohio well-known for its motorsports programs and operation of Limaland Motorsports Park, to see what UNOH is looking for in high school students coming to their programs to better suit everyone's needs. "As this came together, the competition at the track became less important, and the education became way more important. Not only do we want kids to learn, we want them to understand how many jobs there are in the racing industry as a whole. My crew chief that I had when I had my [Nascar] Truck team is now the head shock guy at 23XI [Nascar Cup Team]. We were talking in Charlotte, and he had these kids working on the computer simulator, and you have all these departments. Almost everything that you can imagine if you want to work professionally, if you're an artist, a computer geek, an engineer, a tradesman, it doesn't matter what you are, if you want to be in the racing industry, you can do it," Vest said. "That's what spawned this idea. We're going to show these kids that even on a weekly racing deal, that even with a Sport Mod, there's a place where you fit. You want to design race cars? You fit. You want to understand engineering and the physics of the car and the math of the setup? You fit. There's so many cool ways to participate in racing. That's where the gears really started turning for this program. The program is driven more by the education than the competition," Vest continued. "Once we can get the kids to understand that you're an artist, and you're a part of this team, and you're going to design the race car, you're going to design the press releases, or the print, or the social media. There are so many avenues to be a part of it and grow as you further your education. All the facets coming together has been awesome. The welding kids, the hospitality kids, you have your EMS and police officers, and it's all relevant. Now, we aren't just talking about race cars, we're talking about race tracks. Now we have all these kids that want to do AV, and now FloRacing is intrigued because it's up their alley. I've really just taken racing as something really cool and fun to do, and we're showing how racing can be involved in almost any career path for you." Once the SMART Mod program gets to the point of racing, they'll take to the track on Wednesday nights, with each school potentially having a varsity, junior varsity, and reserve team, with each team having a primary and reserve driver. If the primary driver wins one night, then the reserve driver takes the wheel the next race night. They'll compete for points as if it were a regular division at Atomic Speedway, and a champion will be crowned at the Speedway's banquet in the off-season, just like the 410, late model, modified or sport mod teams. There are some hurdles though. As Charlie said in his interview, "The schools are a little timid, and the insurance guys are jerks." Then, Charlie said something that makes a lot of sense about what this program is about, and how racers are as a whole: "I told them, put them on my insurance, I don't care. We're racers, we understand the liability, and most people don't, because they don't understand racing. I can promise you, that based on these risk assessments, racing is half as risky as gymnastics. These kids aren't going to be going fast. I could probably pass them in my Jeep. If I could just get these people to the track, put them in a car, and show them what they're going to do, I could calm them all down and get them to understand. It's racing, and it seems dangerous and on the edge, and I get it, but these aren't 410 sprint cars, they're sport mods." For Vest and company though, the obstacles are just a minor blip on the radar when it comes to the overall goals for the SMART Mod program. The goals extend beyond Atomic Speedway, Southern Ohio, and Ohio as a whole. Vest envisions this kind of program across the nation, and as a program that can convene to crown a state champion and even a national champion. But that's the competition side, and as Charlie said, the program is driven more by the education than the competition. "Year one, I just want to get the damn thing off the ground and I want to get the kids involved," Vest started in about his goals. "I want a lot of excitement and I want to get the kids that have disengaged, reengaged in the education system. If we can get them to understand that it's not just the jocks or the or the smart kids that can excel in education. I want the artsy kids that would never talk to the welding kids and appreciate what each one does. That's something you don't learn until you're older." Vest pointed out an example of the race car driver appreciating what the wrap-designer does, because someone may be able to drive the wheels off of a race car, but they can't draw a stickman to save their life. "I want to get it off the ground and have a truly successful and safe year one. I'd like to grow it and have five schools in ten states in the next year or two. I'd love to have statewide races and a national championship and have this program become a standard and viable sport once we get the schools to come to the fact that racing isn't as dangerous and isn't everything that they think it is. It gets more people involved because it isn't a strict 'you have to be an athlete or have to be this or that' to succeed. Racing has a much bigger place at the table than where it does right now." "It's about being there, being part of the deal, and understanding that you want that team environment. You want them to understand that when a quarter panel gets ripped off, or the front end gets tore up, that it takes four or five guys or girls thrashing to get that car back out," Vest said. The local race teams have also volunteered to help out with this program, which was one of the gaps Vest needed to fill as he has brought this idea to life. The SMART Mod program will have a mentorship aspect to it, and the cars will stay at the local teams shops. The racers will mentor the schools to teach them the racing side, and it doesn't stop there. Atomic's graphic designer for their banners will be in charge of the creative aspects of the program and can help show the kids how certain things are done, and why certain things are taught in school. He can show the students his graphic design shop and show the students how the basics are applied in his shop. There are a lot of moving parts in this project, but these moving parts are all working towards a common goal promoting racing and getting more kids involved in racing. A big, remarkable step that Atomic Speedway owner Charlie Vest is taking towards this goal is making this program a template, so that any track in the nation can plug in this program and race. Charlie is doing the leg work and figuring out how to answer the tough questions from the schools and insurance companies, and trying to make this program as accessible as possible, at no cost. "My goal was to get these companies like My Race Pass involved and a part of this templating, so I can build this structure into something like My Race Pass, so all of the formalities of this process and procedure are built in, and say when Skyline Speedway wants to do this down near Athens, Ohio, I can give them the package on My Race Pass and it has all the structure you need for a race night," said Vest. "By the way, we've done the hard work with the insurance companies, and have done the legwork with why they're going to tell you no, and what their excuses are for this and what excuses are for that. Here's your packet of information, so that when you go before a school board or a superintendent, you have everything you're going to need; the structure of the creative arts program, the things you're going to want to get the kids to understand and entice them to design. As we work through this platform this year, we'll have some key points we can put together and pass on to the other tracks. We can give them the entire program, all you have to do is plug this in at your racetrack and have a representative go out and talk to the schools. Here is your platform, here is the template, here is the structure, the education. UNOH is backing it, everybody's behind it, they believe in the curriculum and in what we're doing. It takes all of the hard parts that we've fought the last six months for away. All we have to do is hand them some three ring binders, tell them that Atomic has done this and no kids were hurt. Here are some pictures, here are some videos, here are some grants you can get. It's a great deal because the schools don't get charged," continued Vest "That's the template that we're building. I could call Husets and say 'Hey, you have to do this, it's awesome,' and they can go to ten schools and they have the template and they can plug and play. When somebody says something like 'We've been dealing with these insurance companies,' we can show them where that's been addressed and move on. We're doing the hard work, because I really, really want racing to be more of the norm when we start talking about education. We can do it because if we build the cars right and do it right, they're safe." The SMART Mod program is a very ambitious program, but one thing I learned during the interview with Charlie Vest is that he has thought about everything that could pertain to this. I had plenty of follow-up questions about curriculum or local team involvement that he answered before I could even ask. There hasn't been a stone left unturned with this program, and it is being put together for all the right reasons. As people's interests and motivations change, racing has to find a way to keep their place at the table, and as Charlie said, earn the bigger spot that racing deserves. That means getting students, parents, teachers, administrators and even state government officials involved. Get them involved to see what racing truly is; not the dangerous crashes and near-misses we see in compilations on YouTube or TikTok, but all the hard work, education, teamwork, and camaraderie between so many different facets of life to get a local race team to the track every Friday and Saturday night.
