- Ryan Timms Wins The 2023 Hockett/McMillin Memorial At Lucas Oil Speedway!
Bryan Hulbert - WHEATLAND, Mo. (September 17, 2023) Mother Nature delayed things by a day, but it was worth the wait as Ryan Timms followed up his Thursday prelim victory with a $10,000 payday and his first championship feature event win at the Jesse Hockett/ Daniel McMillin Memorial with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com. "I'm really happy I was able to get this win. This is a bucket-list race to win, and I'm glad I was able to get it done this year. I want to thank the Hockett family for everything they do for this event," stated Timms, who joined Johnny Herrera as the only other driver to win a Sunday showdown at the Hockett/McMillin Memorial. Leading all by the opening lap Saturday night, which was led by Jake Bubak, Timms shot into the lead on the second revolution. Challenged once during one of the four-race stoppages, the DriveWFX.com No. 5t rolled to the finish with a 1.667-second advantage, running multiple grooves throughout the 30-lap event. "It was rubbered up earlier on today and rubbered up for that non-wing feature, so I was really expecting it to all blow off really fast and go straight to the top and just conserve your tires. The track actually stayed together fairly well. Jason Martin fought his way to a runner-up finish, with Bubak ending up third after slipping back to fifth during the mid-point of the feature event. Mounting a huge charge and at one point looking like he was going to roll by the field, Tim Estenson railed the cushion for a ten-spot gain to finish fourth. Up from ninth with a late race charge, Hank Davis completed the top five. Battling sixth to second until Lap 23, Sean McClelland slipped back to where he started, with Blake Hahn following in seventh. Jamie Ball finished eighth, with Matt Covington rolling forward nine spots for a ninth-place finish. Miles Paulus made up the top ten. The Hockett Hard Charger this year was Jeffrey Newell. The award was worth an extra $3,077. The Non-Wing Hard Charger was Jesse Vermillion. The POWRI WAR feature was topped by California's Ricky Lewis, who did so from the 11th starting spot. Overall, the 2023 Hockett/McMillin Memorial saw 147 Sprint Cars officially hit the track between both sanctioning bodies. The night started off with AR Dyno Specialty Qualifiers, with wins going to Hank Davis, Derek Hagar, Jeremy Campbell, Wayne Johnson, and Miles Paulus. Twin BMRS B-Features were won by Howard Moore and Jordon Mallett. The next event for the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com will be the COMP Cams Short Track Nationals at Texarkana 67 Speedway, happening October 5, 6, and 7, paying $20,000 to win, $1,000 to start. - Terry McCarl Leads It All For $5,000 Score At Clay County Fair Speedway
Bryan Hulbert - SPENCER, Iowa (September 12, 2023) Picking up $5,000 at the Battle of the Blue Ribbon presented by DeBerg Concrete Tuesday night, Terry McCarl collected his 15th career victory with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa. The 15th driver to top the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com in 2023, McCarl's last win came 126 events ago on October 31, 2019, at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. "I had a great car right off the bat. I love the feel of these dished wings. I always give my boys crap. They think I'm old and stupid for running them, but it's just a feel I like in the car, and the track wasn't laying rubber, but it was cleaning off," said McCarl. "It feels great to win, and it's hard to win anywhere, but on the national level with these ASCS guys, they're a great group of guys, you know, and here; I've never really run that well here in Spencer. In fact, this is my first win here." Getting the lead on the opening lap from the right of the front row, the Country Builder Construction/Justice Brothers No. 24 led from start to finish at the three-eighths-mile oval. Finding traffic late in the non-stop feature event did little to slow the wily veteran, who pulled away to a 3.719-second advantage at the drop of the checkered flag. Chased by Matt Covington, the No. 95 moved to second through the opening turns of the 25-lap affair and stayed there for the duration. Steadily moving forward, Indiana's Zane DeVault worked every line he could find to move from 11th to third at the white flag. Getting the spot away from Blake Hahn, the No. 52 settled for fourth, with Brandon Anderson fifth. Moving throughout the top ten, Ayrton Gennetten finally settled into sixth. Chris Martin crossed seventh, with Howard Moore eighth. Christopher Thram and Jason Martin made up the top ten. The finishing order was based on a split finish, as the red came out after the top two had crossed the finish line. Displayed for Lance Moss, who dove out of his car on fire, he was able to walk on his own to the Ambulance for further evaluation. Special thanks to the entire safety crew for their response, as well as Blake Hahn and Jordon Mallett, who jumped out of their cars to assist a fellow driver. Tuesday's field had 31 drivers drawing in. Blake Hahn was the overall quick qualifier at 14.283-seconds. AR Dyno Specialty Heat Race wins went to Matt Covington, Skylar Prochaska, Zane DeVault, and Jack Dover. The BMRS B-Feature went to Sam Henderson. One provisional was used by Landon Britt. Up next is the $10,000 to win Hockett/McMillin Memorial on September 14, 15, and 16 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. - Hockett-McMillin Memorial Spotlight: ASCS championship leader Martin looks to add Lucas Oil Speedway success
WHEATLAND, MO. (Sept. 12, 2023) - Jason Martin fell in love with open-wheel racing when he was a youngster after his parents took him to the races in his native Kansas. It didn't take Martin long to decide what he wanted to make racing his career calling. "You come to the races one time and you'll be bit," Martin said of instant enthusiasm for the sport. "I was a really young kid and my parents took me to the races pretty often and it was an easy pretty choice of what I wanted to do growing up. I wanted to drive a sprint car. Dad got me into go-karts early and I was about 17 when I got into a sprint car." Hundreds of wins and multiple track championships later, the 41-year-old from Liberal, Kan., is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. Martin leads the American Sprint Car Series championship chase as the circuit makes its annual visit to Lucas Oil Speedway this week for the 13th annual Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial. "It's up there at the top of the payouts and it's a huge car count," Martin said of the Hockett-McMillin, which begins Thursday night and concludes with a $10,000-to-win feature on Saturday for the winged cars. "It's always really fun event and we always really enjoy going and racing there." The POWRi WAR non-wing sprints also will be in action with a $4,077-to-win feature on Saturday night. Both divisions will run split qualifying programs with half of the fields racing Thursday night and the other half on Friday, gathering points toward starting positions on the final night. Because of a large car count, this marks the first time the split qualifying nights have been used for the ASCS at the Hockett-McMillin. Martin said applies added pressure. Getting a prime starting position for the big Saturday finale is vital and there's little room for error on the preliminary night, which is Friday in Martin's case. "In the past you always got three nights on the track and were able to make a bunch of changes and got really good by the third night," Martin said. "This year puts a little bit of a curve ball in where you split the field in half. But we have pretty good notes, so hopefully we'll be able to roll out of the box right away. "It puts a lot more stress on just one night. Before you had kind of a mulligan, where you if you had a bad night you could recover. Now you have one chance as far as your qualifying night goes. It's a lot more pressure to perform and have good luck." No matter what happens this weekend, it's been a heck of a year for Martin with nine ASCS wins and 16 top-five finishes in 23 events to built a 99-point lead over Matt Covington. Overall, Martin has 12 feature victories this season. "We've never spent a bunch of time chasing points championships," Martin said. "This is our second year running for the ASCS national points. It's been good. We've been able to get to a lot of the race tracks we were at last year and go back to our notebook. We've been able to improve on a lot of those finishes. "We've won 12 races so far. There were years in the past where we've won 15 or 16, so it's not our highest win total, but for the cars and caliber of the series we're racing … I'm happy with our season and we've got a little bit left to go to try and close it out and try to win a championship." Among his accomplishments, Martin won The Steve King Memorial at Dodge City Raceway Park in 2009 as well as in 2011 at The Jetmore Motorplex. He's also one of handful of racers who can say they have made the A-Mains at both the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa and the Knoxville Nationals in Knoxville, Iowa in the same year as a rookie in these events. Martin has raced in 34 different states plus Canada and won races at 20 different tracks in eight states, driving both winged and non-winged sprints, plus midgets and micro sprints. While he's yet to win in limited appearances at Lucas Oil Speedway, Martin said he feels good about the track surface and plans to use Thursday night to scout how the track changes throughout the evening and how the maintenance crew adjusts. "Typically, I really do like the track there," Martin said. "They do a really good job with the track prep. Most of the time it's slick and wide and that's what I prefer it to be, when the cushion gets up there by the fence. "We'll kind of see (Thursday) what the track prep guys do. If it's really wet and they let it go, or if it gets slick early and they have time to go re-prep it. Just watch and see what the track surface changes look like, what the non-wing cars do to the track. Just pay attention to what happens. It's a good learning tool." The Hockett-McMillin Memorial recognizes the legacy of Jesse Hockett, from Warsaw, Mo., who was a star in both the winged and non-wing sprint divisions when he lost his life in a shop accident in 2010. His cousin and crew chief, Daniel McMillin, was killed in an automobile accident in 2006. Programs each of the first two nights will find $3,000-to-win features for the winged cars and $2,000 for the wingless. Drivers will earn points each time they hit the track - qualifying, heat races and features - Thursday and Friday nights to help determine their starting position for the final night. The finales on Saturday night, following last-chance qualifiers and B-Mains will be $10,000 for the ASCS winner and $4,077 for the WAR first-place finisher. - Landon Britt Lands First ASCS National Win By Inches At Arrowhead Speedway!
Bryan Hulbert - COLCORD, Okla. (September 1, 2023) Holding on through late-race restarts and a drag race to the finish on Friday night, the hard work finally paid off for Landon Britt, who captured his first career victory with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com at Arrowhead Speedway by 0.021-seconds. "That last lap was killer. No tires left, I had no grip coming out of the corner, and I was headed right for that wall, but I was going to hit it to win it," chuckled Britt, who did tap the wall coming to the checkered flag. The sixth driver from Memphis, Tenn., to top an ASCS National event, Landon is the 170th different winner since 1993 and the 14th one to top an event in 2023. The tour's first visit to the newly built one-third-mile oval, the event was the 1,100th for the series. Making the win even better for Britt is doing so with his family, "It means a lot. My parents are the ones who really support this deal for me, and my Mom doesn't get to come out to a lot of these, but she was able to come to this one and see a win." Taking the green third, that is where Landon spent most of the race. Chasing Jason Martin for second, the track began cleaning off in the last half of the event. Making passing more challenging as the race progressed, Landon put his rear tires to work to complete the pass for second on Lap 26. Getting by Sean McClelland, who took over from Alex Sewell after the opening revolution, two laps later, the top five worked past the start-finish line before the caution flew to complete the lap. Securing the lead for Britt, the restart saw Sean try and time the cone but advanced past the No. 10 too soon. Putting McClelland back two spots for the infraction, Jason Martin moved back to second and was in hot pursuit. Back-to-back cautions before finally going green, the pair raced off the final turn with Landon pushing out the line and towards the wall. Hitting the low line and aiming at the top spot, the pair hammered down to the finish, with Britt holding on for the win over Jason. Sean McClelland made up one spot to finish third, with Alex Sewell fourth. Rolling up from 14th, Howard Moore completed the top five. Chris Morgan crossed sixth, followed by KSE Hard Charger, Kyler Johnson, who advanced 11 positions to seventh. Jodon Mallett, Tyler Thomas, and Brandon Anderson made up the top ten. Friday's field included 21 drivers, with Sean McClelland establishing the ASCS Track Record at 12.500-seconds during The Driver's Project Qualifying. AR Dyno Specialty Heat Race wins went to Jeffrey Newell, Jason Martin, and Landon Britt. The next event for the American Sprint is Saturday, September 2, at Longdale Speedway. The $5,000 to win, $500 to start affair opens 5:00 P.M., followed by Hot Laps at 7:15 P.M., and Racing at 8:00 P.M. (CDT). Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and free for kids 12 and under. Pits are $35. Longdale Speedway is located just south of Longdale, Okla., on OK-58. Information on the track can be found at https://www.facebook.com/longdalespeedway. - Victory For Jason Martin At The Salina Highbanks Speedway!
Bryan Hulbert - PRYOR, Okla. (August 26, 2023) Five different leaders over 25 laps at the Salina Highbanks Speedway Saturday night, and it was Jason Martin who led the one that counts with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com at the Oklahoma oval. A bit of a bounce back point-wise for Martin following a ninth-place finish Friday to Matt Covington's win; the two are now separated by 49-points. "It's a long schedule. Right now, it's hot, and everyone's intensity is pretty high, but you just have to keep going as hard as you can every night. Last night, we didn't have the best of nights. Just didn't have some things go our way, but I woke up this morning to a new day." Taking the green from fourth, Martin chased until Lap 19. Jeremy Campbell went to the point on the opening lap, with the second revolution going the way of Jordon Mallett. Holding through Lap 4, Chance Morton was able to charge to the point on Lap 5. Using a restart to his advantage, Blake Hahn shot fourth to second in an instant, and began his pursuit of the No. 7m. Taking over on Lap 14, Hahn looked to be on his way to victory, but a rare mistake saw the No. 52 slide through the cushion in the third and fourth turns, resulting in Blake sliding off the backside of the fourth turn and into the grass. Keeping the car upright and rolling, Blake was able to continue. Having worked to second a lap earlier, Jason Martin took over the point. Caution with two laps to run, Martin was able to keep pace for his eighth victory of the season with the National Tour, and 11th overall this year between ASCS and Nebraska 360s. Chance Morton crossed second but, unfortunately, bypassed the scales and was disqualified. That moved Jordon Mallett to second, and Wayne Johnson to third. Matt Covington picked up three spots to fourth, with Jeremy Campbell ending up fifth. Landon Britt, Kyler Johnson, Chistopher Townsend, Jeffrey Newell, and Blake Hahn completed the top ten. The field Saturday consisted of 22 drivers with Blake Hahn topping The Driver's Project Qualifying at 13.353-seconds. The first time the tour has qualified at the Salina Highbanks, Hahn's time is the 360cid track record. AR Dyno Specialty Heat Race wins went to Jeremy Campbell, Wayne Johnson, and Jason Martin. Fighting a fueling issue that relegated him to last in the A-Feature lineup, Howard Moore picked up nine spots to earn the KSE Hard Charger. The American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com is back in Oklahoma for Labor Day Weekend, the series will debut at Arrowhead Speedway on Colcord, Okla. on Friday, September 1 for $4,000 to win, then return to Longdale Speedway on Saturday, September 2 for $5,000 to win. - Covington Rebounds For $5,000 Score At Lakeside Speedway With The American Sprint Car Series!
Bryan Hulbert - KANSAS CITY, Kan. (August 25, 2023) A win that even Matt Covington did not expect so soon, as he is still recovering from injuries sustained during a crash on August 12 during the Knoxville Nationals, the No. 95 defied the odds and rocketed into Victory Lane Friday night with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com at Lakeside Speedway. "This honestly not what I was expecting tonight. I was just hoping I could be here at all, but really, right now, I feel pretty good. My back is sore, and my chest is a little more sore after that, but I couldn't be happier," said Covington, who gave props to his crew for stepping up and getting everything ready as he continues to recuperate. "I got Matthew Howard back out here and glad to get him back in Victory Lane, and Steven [Lane] for everything. Those two have worked their butts off." Winning three times with the National Tour this season, all three have come at Kansas tracks, with his win at Lakeside the first time that Covington's has topped the famed half-mile to bring his overall total to 19. Taking the green from third, Covington battled pole sitter Wayne Johnson into the first two turns. Nearly wheel-to-wheel through the first five laps, Johnson rocketed off the low side of the second turn to take the point just as the top two completed the fifth revolution. Keeping Covington at by for two more laps, the T&L Foundry/XXX Chassis No. 95 reclaimed the lead on Lap 8. Able to pull away in traffic, Matt's advantage grew to 1.-978-seconds before red lights came on with five to go. Coming together in the fourth turn, Daryn Langford tangled up Kade Morton. Both drivers are okay. Pulling away on the restart, Covington gapped the field by 2.177-seconds over the final five laps. Going for broke on the restart around the top of turns three and four. Ayrton Gennetten mounted a charge on Lap 23 for second, and his career fourth podium finish with the National Tour. Wayne Johnson ended up third for the 58th time. Rolling back to seventh on the start, Landon Britt clawed his way back to fourth, with Jordon Mallett in fifth. Racing in and out of the top five, Brandon Anderson ended up sixth, with Chris Martin seventh. Up from 14th, Miles Paulus was the KSE Hard Charger, followed by Jason Martin in ninth. Jace Park completed the top ten. The field Friday night consisted of 23 drivers, with Wayne fastest during Driver's Project Qualifying at 14.783-seconds. AR Dyno Specialty Heat Races went to Ayrton Gennetten, Chris Martin, and Matt Covington. - Jason Martin Wins Weather Delayed A-Feature At 81 Speedway!
Bryan Hulbert - PARK CITY, Kan. (July 22, 2023) Getting the show in just before the rains came the last time the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com was at 81-Speedway, Mother Nature got a little bit of revenge on Saturday night with a pop-up shower causing around a three-hour delay before Jason Martin rolled back into Victory Lane at the three-eighths-mile oval. "First of all, thank you to all these people who sat it out in that rain. It was pretty cool to look out while it was still raining and see people sitting in the stands. Kudos to you guys. The fans are what pay our bills, and hopefully, you all enjoyed it," stated Martin to the applause of the fans. "Also, to the staff. They could have just checked out and said, we're done, but instead, it was an awesome racetrack." Leading from start to finish, the start was crucial to Martin's success. Taking the green to the right of the front row, Jason and Covington swapped lines into the first turn, with the No. 36 able to escape with the lead. Gone in clean air, traffic brought Covington into the mix, and at one point, the top four were nose to tail. Rubbing up on Martin's left rear trying to shoot the bottom off the fourth turn as Jason worked a slower car on Lap 12, Matt was able to calm the right side tires of the No. 95 back to the racing surface and missed taking the point by 0.098-seconds. Slowed thrice during the 25-lap affair, the final one came on Lap 19. First and second unchanged, Martin would roll away by 1.064-seconds at the checkered flag. Covington in second, the race behind him saw several shifts through the last six laps as Jordon Mallett grabbed third away from Jake Bubak while Howard Moore snuck into the top five. Getting shuffled back to eighth at one point, Brandon Anderson made it back to sixth, with Don Droud, Jr. slipping back on the final restart from fifth to seventh. Making up seven positions for the night KSE Hard Charger Award, Christopher Townsend crossed eighth, followed by Tim Estenson ninth and Whit Gastineau in tenth. The field numbered 24 on Saturday, with Tim Estenson, the overall quickest driver in The Driver's Project Qualifying at 14.348-seconds. AR Dyno Specialty Heat Race wins went to Don Droud, Jr., Landon Britt, and Jason Martin. The next event for the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com is the 33rd annual Xtreme Powered by Mediacom 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank, happening August 3-5, at Knoxville Raceway. The event is $20,000 to win. The 2023 season will mark the 32nd year of competition for the American Sprint Car Series. - Matt Covington Wins The Steve King Memorial At Dodge City Raceway Park!
Bryan Hulbert - DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 8, 2023) Adding his name to the list of winners at Dodge City Raceway Park, Matt Covington captured the $5,088 to win Steve King Memorial with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com. Covington's second win of the season with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com, the victory is his 18th overall in 368 A-Feature starts, and first at the Dodge City Raceway Park. "We had a really good car, and I'll admit, I had some lucky breaks with Wayne and Bubak dropping out, but that No. 36 has been kicking my butt all year, so I can't be talking too much trash, but we got him this time," said Covington. "With Jason restarting behind me, I knew I had to be perfect because he's good here. We saw that last night, so I didn't want to give him any chances." The third leader of the 30-lap affair, the first 17 laps were commanded by Wayne Johnson. A couple of close calls in traffic that allowed Jason Martin and Jake Bubak to close the gap on the Outlaw Wings No. 2c, disaster struck Johnson working the 18th circuit, as the car coasted in the infield off the backstretch. Having worked by Martin for the runner-up spot at the same time Wayne's night came to a close, Jake Bubak took command in the Ochs Racing No. 1x, but the lead was short-lived as mechanical failure struck as Jake competed Lap 19. Nearly eighth-tenths of a second ahead of the race for second when the car began to slow into the first and second turns, that battle went the way of Matt Covington as the caution lights blinked on. In clean air on the restart, Covington pulled away quickly, with his advantage growing to over two seconds before caution lights came on one last time on Lap 26. Setting up a four laps dash to the finish, Martin stayed with the No. 95 on the start but would not keep pace as Covington sped away by 1.255-seconds. Jason Martin crossed second for his 25th career podium finish, with Jordon Mallett taking the final podium step. Landon Britt moved up spot spots to fourth, with Christopher Townsend advancing eight positions to complete the top five. Kyler Johnson, sixth, was chased by Howard Moore in seventh. Jeremy Campbell, Whit Gastineau, and Brandon Anderson, who also made up eight spots, rounded out the top ten. The night started with The Driver's Project Qualifying, which saw Wayne Johnson and Jordon Mallett tie for the new record at 14.215-seconds, only to have Jason Martin retake the record with a 14.104-second lap. AR Dyno Specialty Heat Race wins went the way of Kansas, with Kyler Johnson, Jordan Knight, and Jeremy Campbell earning wins. The KSE Hard Charger of the night was Christopher Townsend. The next events for the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com are Friday, July 14, at Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee, Okla., and Saturday, July 15, at Batesville Motor Speedway in Batesville, Ark. Both nights pay $4,000 to win, $400 to start. The 2023 season will mark the 32nd year of competition for the American Sprint Car Series. - ALLGAYER ADDS ANOTHER WHILE MOORE AND ESGAR LAND FIRST NOW600 WINS AT DODGE CITY RACEWAY PARK
Bryan Hulbert - DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 7, 2023) Adding two more names to the list of winners with the Dirt2Media National Open Wheel 600 Series presented by Hi-Plains Building Division on Friday night, the superstars of small cars took on the eighth-mile-oval inside the Dodge City Raceway Park with Jude Allgayer back in Victory Lane for the second time this week, while Cole Esgar and Ace Moore each landed their first wins. Outlasting the onslaught of challenges from Brant Woods in traffic for this first NOW600 A-Class victory, Colorado's Cole Esgar led all by the opening lap Friday night. Getting by the No. 83 on the second lap, the final two laps were a green, white, checkered dash to the finish, with Woods missing the win by 0.192-seconds; however, the Chickasha racer failed to appear at the scales post-race, forcing a disqualification, and advancing Ryder McCutcheon to second. Chance Cody crossed third, with Kaden Weger and Carson Bolden making up the top five. Met with roaring approval, Dodge City's Ace Moore topped a back-and-forth battling with Weldon Buford for his first NOW600 Non-Wing feature win. Able to work back into the lead after the pair traded the point on lap six, seven, and eight, the No. 49a pulled away by 0.893-seconds at the finish. Buford held onto silver while tenth-starting Ryder McCutcheon posted his second podium of the night in third. Skyler Burns and Jaden Holder completed the top five. Getting to the lead first thing, it was Jude Allgayer posting his second NOW600 Restricted win. Stalked through most of the race by Ty Fulghum, the No. 73 unfortunately retired on Lap 23. Moving Carson Bolden to second, the No. B2 couldn't mount the charge on Allgayer. Braxton Weger was third, with Cash Lacombe fourth and Callan Hill in fifth. The Steve King Memorial continues Saturday, July 8. Gates open at 5:00 P.M. with racing at 7:30 P.M. (CDT). Tickets are $20, and free for kids 12 and under. Pits are $35. Dodge City Raceway Park is located at 11322 110 Rd. in Dodge City, Kan. For more information on the track, log onto https://www.racedcrp.com or call (620) 225-3277. - Covington Wins the Steve King Memorial
Matt Covington won ASCS National Tour portion of the Steve King Memorial Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park.
- Jason Martin Snags Steve King Memorial Opener At Dodge City Raceway Park
Bryan Hulbert - DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 7, 2023) Landing his tenth career victory with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com Friday night at Dodge City Raceway Park, Jason Martin wrestled the lead from Howard Moore on at the race's mid-point and held on to win Night 1 of the Steve King Memorial. "It's nice being able to race hard wheel-to-wheel with people and they give you room. Howard's always been a really good racer, and I appreciate and respect him for that, but traffic got a little sketchy there," said Martin of the race for the lead. Win No. 6 on the season with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com, and ninth in combined competition with the Malvern Bank 360 Sprint Series, Jason Martin rolled to second on the start as Howard Moore shot into the lead. Slowed on Lap 3 as Wayne Johnson found himself missing the right front on his No. 2c, Moore put distance on the field when the race resumed. A few laps from traffic, that allowed Martin to close. Cutting the gap from 1.205-seconds to 0.424 over four laps, Jason was able to roll by for the point on Lap 12. Working through traffic, Jason was boxed in with five laps to go. Opening the door for the AR Dyno Specialty No. 3, Moore took a shot, but could not re-secure the lead. Able to clear lapped traffic, the Bybee Electric No. 36 pulled away to a 1.497-seconds advantage at the checkered flag. Howard Moore, in second for the third time in his career, was followed by Oklahoma's Whit Gastineau for his first national podium finish. Matt Covington crossed fourth, with Landon Britt in fifth. Jordon Mallett moved up to sixth from ninth, with Jake Bubak rolling eight spots to seventh. Kyler Johnson, who came back to top the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association A-Feature, was eighth, followed by Brandon Anderson, and Jeremy Huish to complete the top ten. The field of 23 drivers on Night 1 of the Steve King Memorial was topped in The Driver's Project Qualifying by Jason Martin with a track record time of 14.341-seconds. AR Dyno Specialty Heat Races were topped by Kyler Johnson, Jeremy Huish, and Landon Britt. The KSE Hard Charger was Jake Bubak who advanced eight spots. The Steve King Memorial continues Saturday, July 8 with a $5,088 to win, $500 to start A-Feature. Gates open at 5:00 P.M. with racing at 7:30 P.M. (CDT). - Zorn, Woods, And Weger Add To Win Totals During Dirt2Media NOW600 Debut At Rush County
Bryan Hulbert - LA CROSSE, Kan. (July 6, 2023) Adding to their win totals with the Dirt2Media National Open Wheel 600 Series presented by Hi-Plains Building Division, Brant Woods and Trey Zorn each captured their second win in as many races in A-Class and Non-Wing, while Braxton Weger captured his second win of the 2023 season in Restricted. The race of the night, Trey Zorn brought the home-state fans to their feet with a last-lap pass for the win over North Carolina's Hunter Kohn. Leading from the start, Kohn protected the bottom as Zorn stalked the No. 48 through the final laps. Diamonding down, hoping to catch Kohn slipping off the hub, Zorn was finally forced to let it eat on the top as the pair raced into the final two turns. Pulling alongside for the win off the final turn, Trey Zorn snagged the win by 0.006-seconds to record the closest finish in NOW600 National competition. Kohn was joined on the podium by Weldon Buford. Fourth was Chance Cody, and fifth was Ryder McCutcheon. Running off and hiding for his second A-Class win of the week, Brant Woods led start to finish in the Jim's Diesel and Auto No. 83. Pulling to over three seconds over the race for second, it was Trey vs. Kasen Zorn for the spot with Trey Zorn, from fifth, taking over on Lap 13. Trailing by lead by as much as three seconds, Zorn cut it down over the last five laps to 0.761-seconds, but there was no denying Woods the win. Cale Lagroon snagged third on the closing lap. Dropping Kasen Zorn to fourth, the top five rounded out with Carson Bolden. Braxton Weger's second career Dirt2Media NOW600 Restricted victory, the Calera, Okla. driver led flag-to-flag. Dawson Woods crossed second, with Carson Bolden third. Cash Lacombe, from tenth, made it to fourth, with Cale Lagroon fifth.
