- Pierce Wins Record-Tying Third Sunoco North/South 100 at Florence
UNION, KY (August 10, 2024) - Bobby Pierce led 75 of the 100 laps on Saturday night en-route to his second straight Sunoco North/South 100 Presented by Lucas Oil at Florence Speedway. It was Pierce's third win in the crown jewel race as he ties Jimmy Owens and Jack Boggs for the most wins in the 42-year history of the race. The Oakwood, Illinois driver earned $75,000 for the victory. Pierce also became the first driver to win the event in back-to-back years since Don O'Neal in 2012-13. A restart with six laps to go gave Devin Moran one last shot to steal the win from Pierce, but Pierce was able to hold off Moran for his fourth Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season. Moran finished second falling just 0.597 seconds behind the winner at the finish. Drake Troutman, who was making his first ever appearance at Florence rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. The 19-year-old also earned the Todd Steel Buildings Hard Charger of the Race advancing 20 positions from his 23rd starting spot. Completing the top five were Max Blair and Brandon Overton. Pierce jumped to the early lead in the race as Mike Marlar moved into second around Daulton Wilson on lap four. Pierce held a steady lead with Marlar holding down the second spot until he seized the opportunity to take the lead as Pierce endured traffic. Marlar made the pass for the lead on lap 42 gaining the top spot from Pierce, who led the first 41 laps of the race from the outside of the front row. Marlar held the point over Pierce until Pierce regained the lead on lap 67. Moran, who started ninth, was able to overhaul Marlar for second on lap 72. Caution flags on lap 76 and 85 kept Moran in striking distance, but on the restarts, Pierce was able to pull away. Pierce continued to build his lead over Moran, but Moran had one last shot at Pierce as back-to-back cautions on laps 93 and 94 kept the field close. Moran tried every avenue possible to pass Pierce in the closing laps but could never muster enough momentum. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 21st time in his career the second-generation racer was concerned when Marlar passed him and then having to fight off the challenges of Moran late in the race. "I was very worried there. The track was kind of loose on some spots that I'm normally really good at where I could get my launches off the corner. I knew it wasn't going to be there at the end. There were 50 laps to go there and I'm setting there in second and I'm like man we are only halfway through this race, and I feel like I am already burning the tires off a little bit. The track was abrasive and slick in fact it was very slick. It was super hard to run the top. Devin showed his nose, and I really wanted to stay in second, because you have control on the restarts what line you want to pick. So, I knew I had to stay in front of Devin," said the winner. "I knew he [Moran] was going to be pretty good. I figured it would be me and him battling it out there at the end once I got the lead and I saw Devin in second. I was like man I just got to stay ahead of him and do what I've got to do. It was a tough race. It's not fun for me to run the bottom like that. I am way more comfortable running the top." Moran, who closed the gap on points leader Ricky Thornton Jr., continued his solid weekend at Florence as he completed his third runner-up finish in the three days of racing. "I just had to battle up through the field. You've got to get in front of that 32 car before he gets into the lead if not it's hard to pass him. That's what we did at Huset's; we got out front and he was chasing us. I thought I had a shot to get in front of him a couple of times and I just couldn't stay in front of him. I shouldn't be bummed for running second," said Moran, who earned $20,000 for his runner-up finish. "I felt like we had a really good shot at winning there. We just weren't quite good enough. Bobby and them guys did a great job, but so did my guys." Troutman, who currently leads the O'Reilly Auto Parts Rookie-of-the-Year standings lengthened his lead over Clay Harris to 95 points in the chase, had another impressive run coming home in third place. "It was definitely a heck of a night. The whole invert deal there hurt us, I thought I could get a top ten at best. But I don't know the boys never gave up on me. The track was pretty dang good tonight. Congrats to Bobby on the win and Devin for second. We will get back to work and get ready for Batesville next week. Bobby and Devin's been pretty well the class of the field here lately. I am just happy to be up here." The winner's Bobby Pierce Racing, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Hoker Trucking, Low Voltage Solutions, Churchill Transport, Toyota of Danville, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Rio Grande Waste Services, Collins Brothers Towing, A-Plus Vacuum, Leka Tree Service, Carnaghi Towing and Repair, Ted Brown's Quality Paint and Body Shop, VP Fuels, and Bilstein Shocks. Completing the top ten were Jonathan Davenport, Daulton Wilson, Ricky Thornton Jr., Tim McCreadie, and Zack Dohm. - Pierce and Davenport Earn Friday Sunoco North/South 100 Preliminary Wins
WALTON, KY (August 9, 2024) - Bobby Pierce and Jonathan Davenport won the Friday night preliminary events for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series at the Florence Speedway. Pierce won his third Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race of 2024 after he and Devin Moran officially swapped the lead four times during the 25-lap main event. Moran came home in second followed by Mike Marlar, Max Blair, and Dale McDowell. Davenport picked up his sixth series win of the season leading all 25-laps in the second A-Main of the night. Ricky Thornton Jr. was second followed by Garrett Alberson, Jason Jameson, and Tim McCreadie. Pierce and Moran dueled it out, trading the lead four times in the first 13 laps of the race. Pierce was ultimately able to open his advantage to 1.709 seconds over Moran at the finish. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 20th time in his career Pierce, the defending Sunoco North/South 100 champion now has his sights set on his third consecutive crown jewel Saturday night. "That was a fun race with Devin, we've had a lot of fun races lately, back at the Silver Dollar Nationals we raced it out good. We had an awesome race car yet again, it was a bad-fast race car we could run anywhere on the track tonight. I can't wait for the race on Saturday night," said the driver who now has 27 overall wins in 2024. Pierce will attempt to become the first driver since Don O'Neal in 2012 and 2013 to win a North/South in back-to-back years. Moran, who is looking for his first win in the event came home in second. Moran is looking to join his father, Hall-of-Famer Donnie Moran, who won the North/South 100 twice as the second father-son combo to win the historic event. "He [Pierce] was a little bit softer on tires. I was sitting there under the red flag, I don't think it sealed my tires up, but it just took me a couple of laps to get going. He was already checked out by that point. They're doing a really good job. I felt like we learned a lot tonight. It's the most comfortable I've been at Florence in a long time. After last night I wasn't excited as much, but tonight I felt a lot better, at least I could see the 32 up there." Marlar went to a back-up car for Friday after damage to his primary car from a Thursday night incident. "I feel a lot better when I am up there racing and instead of back there wrecking that's for sure. But I know it was fun tonight. I had a really good car all night. Not getting to race last night was a big draw back you know, so at least we got one night in here before we got some idea of what you're going to need for tomorrow." The winner's Bobby Pierce Racing, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Hoker Trucking, Low Voltage Solutions, Toyota of Danville, Churchill Transport, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Rio Grande Wast Services, Collins Brothers Towing, A-Plus Vacuum, Leka Tree Service, Carnaghi Towing and Repair, Ted Brown's Quality Paint and Body Shop, VP Fuels, and Bilstein Shocks. Completing the top ten in the first A-Main were Tanner English, Hudson O'Neal, Daulton Wilson, Zack Dohm, and Drake Troutman. The second 25 lap preliminary race would go caution free as Davenport and Thornton ran one-two the entire race, quickly distancing themselves from the rest of the field. The only threat to Davenport was traffic that allowed Thornton to cut the gap near the end of the race. Nick Hoffman held third until the wall-running Alberson took over on lap 19. Alberson then made one last run on the final lap but fell a half-car length short of passing Thornton at the checkers. Davenport in Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 80th time in his career led wire-to-wire for his second win in two nights at Florence. "There at the end I didn't feel like I could get by the lapped cars as fast as I wanted to. I had to get a little more aggressive than I wanted to. I was trying to take my time there a little bit and not bang wheels with anybody. We've got a long race tomorrow and I'd rather be working on getting more speed than fixing stuff. Our car was pretty good. I don't know much I could have done any different. I always have something in the back on my mind I could do. I am sure we will tweak on it a little bit tomorrow for the 100-lapper." Thornton, who won one of the preliminary events on Thursday came home in second to Davenport, crossing the line 1.982 seconds behind the winner. "For tomorrow night we need to be a little faster. He [Davenport] was good. I felt like in lapped traffic we were about the same pace. It really got a lot drier than I expected it to. I was watching the first one with Bobby and Devin really charging the corner, running super hard and we come out for our feature, and it was pretty slick. I think we have a couple of things to work on, but overall, it's been a really good weekend for us so far." Alberson had the fastest car on the track as timing and scoring had him .5 of a second quicker than anyone, but with no caution flags he could not quite clear Thornton, settling for third to round out the Big River Steel Podium. "I think I had the right tires for a little bit longer run. I don't know what Davenport had on, I think Ricky had a little bit softer. I really found a way to make a little bit of momentum that's kind of a key here and the straightaway speed and once I did that, I could do whatever I wanted to." The winner's Lance and Darla Landers, Double L Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions, Dyna Gro Seed, Lucas Oil products, BobCat of Batesville, Bilstein Shocks, ASC Warranty, Mark Martin Automotive, Mega Plumbing of the Carolinas, and VP Fuels. Completing the top ten in the second feature were Nick Hoffman, Ross Bailes, Brandon Overton, Ethan Dotson, and Carson Ferguson. - Davenport and Thornton Take Thursday Night Preliminaries at Florence
WALTON, KY (August 8, 2024) - Jonathan Davenport and Ricky Thornton Jr. won the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series preliminary main events on Thursday night at Florence Speedway. Davenport won his 79th career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event, pocketing $6,000 for the first 25-lap race leading the entire distance over Devin Moran, Drake Troutman, Tyler Erb, and Josh Rice. Thornton went to Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Victory Lane for the 12th time in 2024 as he led the final 17 circuits to win the second 25-lap main event that also paid $6,000. Bobby Pierce tracked down Thornton late in the race to come home in second. Tim McCreadie was third followed by Hudson O'Neal, and Kyle Bronson. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the fifth time in 2024 and for the first time since June 20 at Lernerville, Davenport was 2.417 seconds ahead of Moran at the finish. "It's a big relief really. I have not liked my car lately in the features. It drove well there honestly; I wished I would have started further back where I could've seen where my car was better or worse at. We are just going have to go back and watch the video and see where was better or where we were worse at. I think we will see more of a transition in the race Saturday around I would say the mid-point of the race. We will just have to wait and see. The biggest takeaway is we are finally in victory lane. That's huge for us and our race team." Moran, who vaulted past Davenport in the championship points after winning the Silver Dollar Nationals at Huset's battled with Davenport early on in the race as he held the second spot the entire 25-lap distance. "I was real good on that start. We had a little bit softer tire than he did. I don't think we could have done anything tonight with him. He was really, really good. I tried moving up, but I couldn't really run up top. I started to move around, but I couldn't do a whole lot. We had a second place tonight so I really can't complain." Troutman earned the Todd Steel Buildings Hard Charger of the Race as he came from 14th to round out the Big River Steel Podium in third in his Florence Speedway debut. "We took last weekend off and just went through this car really good. This is a new Jay Dickens engine under the hood. So, for the first time running here we gained some valuable experience that will hopefully help us the rest of the weekend." The winner's Lance and Darla Landers, Double L Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions, Dyna Gro Seed, Lucas Oil Products, BobCat of Batesville, Bilstein Shocks, ASC Warranty, Mark Martin Automotive, Mega Plumbing of the Carolinas, and VP Fuels. Completing the top ten in the Group (A) A-Main were Jimmy Owens, Ethan Dotson, Dale McDowell, Tanner English, and Ross Bailes. Thornton's win was his first for Koehler Motorsports and their newly named crew chief, Chris Madden. "To come out the first night like we did; we had a lot of speed coming out of the box a few weeks ago. We didn't have the finish we wanted at Huset's, we came back home and put a new body on the car. I tore it up a little bit there. I felt like I was almost running too hard trying to get my tires to go. I know we went harder than most of them. I thought Nick [Hoffman] had a really good pace and then he really started to slow down going into three. I knew I needed to get a good run down the backstraightaway, and I was going to slide him and hopefully I could take off after I did that." Pierce, who started ninth, made a late race charge at the end as he came up 2.080 seconds short of the win. "It was hard racing," said of his battles during the race with Jason Jameson and Cory Hedgcock. "We have raced a lot here. I don't know he [Jameson] knows how to smash the gas pedal I will give him that. He does a good job getting up there early, but we were just coming through, and I had the faster car, and I got under him and slid him. It just got tight up there. Me and Hedgecock had a little contact when we went three-wide, and I apologize for that. I got into his right front." "We were trying to get back to the front, we were really fast, so I had to make the moves in 25 laps. There wasn't a lot of time to get it done. I made a big screwup down there I hit that cushion so hard and man it just about finished our night off. I just about lost eight positions. So, it was fun trying to track RTJ back down. I would have loved to see a caution, but the racetrack was awesome." McCreadie rounded out the Big River Steel Podium with his third-place finish. "It cost us a couple of spots there at the end when I got up in that cushion in four. I know it's not victory lane where we all want to be, but we are definitely improving. It's getting better every time we hit the track." The winner's Bobby and Jessica Koehler, Koehler Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Capital Waste, Traffic Control Safety Services, Ultimate Towing and Recovery, Ultimate Motorsports and RV Park. Rogers Realty and Auction Company, inc., Five-Star Metal Buildings, Coltman Farms, Hoker Trucking, and D&E Outside Services. Completing the top ten in the second A-Main was Cory Hedgecock, Brandon Overton, Nick Hoffman, Garrett Alberson, and Carson Ferguson.
