- EDDIE TAFOYA JR. FAST ON HIS RETURN TO CENTRAL ARIZONA SPEEDWAY
(Chino, CA, April 16, 2025) Even though it had been six years since his last and only appearance at the Central Arizona Speedway, Eddie Tafoya Jr. looked like a track regular when he competed on the clay oval with the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars last Friday and Saturday. Two top-four qualifying efforts highlighted the 27-year-old driver's weekend at the newly revamped 3/8 mile oval. Tafoya, who lives in Chino Hills, California, kicked off his two days of racing in the "Copper State" on Friday with the eighth fastest time of the 30 cars on hand in hot laps with a best lap of 16.956. When it came time to qualify, he turned it up a couple of notches and guided the gorgeous Specialty Fasteners #51T to its best qualifying effort of the year. His lap of 15.816 was the second-fastest time of the night. Tafoya started sixth in the 10-lap second heat and steered his way all the way up to second at the finish. That guaranteed him a starting spot in the A main event. Like he did in qualifying, he turned in the second fastest lap of the race. For the main, the veteran racer lined up on the inside of the third row for the 30-lapper. However, the setup on the car was too tight, and Tafoya slipped backwards and finished 13th. Twenty-four hours later, Tafoya started off well again. He recorded the third fastest time in hot laps in the 26-car field. He took to the track in qualifying and raced around the oval in 15.966 seconds. That was good enough for the fourth-best time in time trials. For the second straight night, Tafoya moved forward in his heat. After starting fifth, he passed one car and to place fourth in the 10-lapper. That move forward was important as it guaranteed Tafoya would start the main in third place. Saturday's main event saw Tafoya turn in what may have been his best performance of 2025. Through the early laps of the race, he ran fifth. On lap nine, he moved up one spot to fourth and he was locked into a fierce battle that was delivering a tremendously exciting race for his fans. A red flag flew on lap 23, bringing a temporary halt to the action. When the cars bumped back off for the restart, Tafoya was running in fifth and had his sights set on more. The car and the driver were both capable. However, when the green lights came back on, the #51T stumbled and slowed at the hit of the throttle. Tafoya steered the car to the bottom, and he pulled into the infield. He was out of fuel. What could have been a top five ended up instead being a 19th. However, it was a very impressive race for Tafoya, who was at the top of his game and battling very hard. The 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year can take solace in the fact that only three drivers in the field turned a better lap than the 16.456 he recorded on the fourth circuit. Two of the three who turned in quicker laps finished first and second in the race. Despite the frustrating finishes, things were not all bad for Tafoya at Central Arizona. He was fast, and his car was, too. He can take that knowledge to his home track, Perris Auto Speedway, for another sprint car war on April 26th. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting its 2025 racing endeavors. - BRODY ROA BACK ON ONE OF HIS BEST TRACKS, CENTRAL ARIZONA SPEEDWAY, FRIDAY, AND SATURDAY
(Cypress, CA, April 10, 2025) When the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars visit the Central Arizona Speedway this Friday and Saturday, April 11th and 12th, Brody Roa, the 2023 series champion, will be one of the favorites to visit victory circle. Dating back to 2019, the Garden Grove, California-based racing star has started seven races on the Pinal County oval and has recorded one win, three runner-up results, a third, one fourth, and one fifth-place finish. Roa initially had no plans of racing this weekend. That is, he had no plans until Arizona-based car owner Chris Bonneau sent him a text offering to drive his car. Thinking back on the only time the two had teamed up in the past, it took Roa about half a second to say, "yes," to the offer. In March of last year, Bonneau and Roa teamed up for a race at Perris Auto Speedway. Roa started the 30-lap A main in 10th and by the end of the 24th lap, he had commandeered the lead and was pulling away from the pack. However, less than two laps later, he dramatically slowed and stopped with a flat tire. The car was rushed back to the work area for a tire change, and when the crew pulled the wheel disk off, a freak deal was discovered. The two plastic bleeder valve fittings in the right rear had snapped off. The crew changed the wheel and sent Roa back to the battlefield. Astonishingly, he quickly started passing cars and drove all the way back to fourth in just four laps. "That was probably one of the best cars on the night I have ever had," Roa enthusiastically remembered. "We qualified halfway decent and worked on the setup through the heat race. We changed the shock package on it for the feature, and it lit off. We started pretty deep. That thing was so comfortable, I was sliding two cars at a time. It was so good off the corner, down the straight, and getting in. I am so excited getting back into it this week." In 2019, Roa not only competed in USAC/CRA, but he also raced full-time in the USAC Southwest series. In fact, he won the Southwest title. In four trips to the Central Arizona Speedway that year, he recorded two second-place finishes, a third, and a fourth. In September of 2020, just prior to the birth of daughter Addison, Roa made his debut in the Jason May #8M and won the CAS main at Central Arizona. Since then, he has only raced at the track two times. Those appearances came at the ASCS/CAS shows to kick off the season on back-to-back nights in February of 2022. He notched a second and a fifth in that trip across the desert. Last week, Roa drove his own #91R at Perris. He qualified 10th in the 24-car field with a lap of 16.861. After a third-place finish in his 10-lap heat, "The Pride of Garden Grove" started 10th in the 30-lap main. Just like his first race of the year five weeks earlier at Perris, he moved forward. This time he ended up sixth. This Friday and Saturday at the Central Arizona Speedway, gates will open at 5:00 with racing at 7:00 each night. The track is located on the Pinal County Fairgrounds at 512 S 11 Mile Corner Road. Adult tickets for the shows are $25.00 each night. Active military and seniors get in for $20.00. For young adults ages 12-17, it is $15.00. Kids 11 and under are free. For more information visit the track website at https://www.centralazraceway.com/ or call the track office at 602-292-7607. For those who cannot make it to the track, both nights of action will be shown live on Flo Racing. Roa would like to thank his 2025 sponsors, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, Burris Racing, ALR Virtual Services, Caltrol, Molecule, and Wilwood Disc Brakes. If you would like to be a marketing partner with the team in 2025, contact Roa using the information at the top of this release. - AFTER AN EIGHTH AT PERRIS, TAFOYA RETURNS TO CENTRAL ARIZONA SPEEDWAY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2019
(Chino, CA, April 10, 2025) This Friday and Saturday, April 11th and 12th, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will compete with the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars on a track he has not raced on since 2019. The track is the Central Arizona Speedway, and the last time he was there, he was competing for Rookie of the Year with the now-defunct USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series. This week's races come hot on the heels of Tafoya's eighth-place finish last week in the USAC/CRA main event at Perris Auto Speedway. A lot has changed since Tafoya was last at the track, which is located about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. Not only the racing surface, but the entire facility has had a major makeover since then. As was previously stated, he was running for the USAC Southwest Series Rookie of the Year award in 2019. He not only won that, but he also captured the USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year award the same season. Thus, he has good memories of the facility. "I ran there one time with the Southwest Series when I was trying to get the Rookie of the Year in 2019," Tafoya remembered. "I had to go to one of the races over there to stay in points. I won a heat race by about half a track. I am not sure exactly where I finished in the main, but I think I was close to the top five." Tafoya recently viewed some of the High Limit Sprint Car Series race at the track located on the Pinal County Fairgrounds. He planned on watching some more before heading to the "Copper State." "From what I remember it was big and fast," Tafoya enthused. "So, that sounds good to me. I am on a different chassis now. I should have a decent base. We just have to make decent calls throughout the night." Last Saturday night, Tafoya raced close to his Chino Hills, California, home at Perris Auto Speedway. It was with the same USAC/CRA Series that he is competing with this weekend. Twenty-four cars showed up for the night of racing and 27-year-old Tafoya qualified sixth fastest at 16.755. Being the sixth fastest qualifier and with the way the first two heats finished, meant that Tafoya was a lock to start on the pole for the main if he placed in the top five of his heat. Starting fifth in the 10-lapper, Tafoya quickly advanced to second, and it looked like he was going to secure the pole for the main. However, that was not to be. "I knew I had to get fifth or better to start pole (in the main)," Tafoya offered. "I got to second quickly, like within two laps. I was running there, and I had the valve stem shoot out of the left rear tire. That ran it out of air, and then it popped it off the bead." Unfortunately, the flat knocked Tafoya from second in the heat to last. And it knocked him off the pole for the main. Instead of starting at the head of the pack, he had to roll off inside row four. The stacked field did not disappoint the fans as the drivers put on the usual Perris Auto Speedway "war." Tafoya looked good in the beautiful #51T and battled throughout the race, finishing eighth. "I think car-wise and driver-wise, that is the closest I have been in a while," Tafoya said of the race. "It was definitely a positive. The setup felt good. I was pretty happy with how it went. I was just a little bit off. A lot of guys were going fast, so it was a lot different starting seventh than it would have been starting on the pole." Central Arizona Speedway is located in Casa Grande on the Pinal County Fairgrounds at 512 S 11 Mile Corner Road. Adult tickets for the shows are $25.00 each night. Active military and seniors get in for $20.00. For young adults ages 12-17, it is $15.00. Kids 11 and under are free. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. each night with racing at 7:00. For more information visit the track website at https://www.centralazraceway.com/ or call the track office at 602-292-7607. - Dominic Gorden, Shane Golobic, Hunter Kinney and Ryan Peter score Placerville wins
Placerville, CA…Dominic Gorden got by Andy Forsberg on lap two and led the remaining distance to snag his second career Thompson's Winged Sprint Car triumph at Placerville Speedway on Saturday. Gorden's win came aboard the familiar Fortitude Driver Development/ Silva's Natural Beef No. 10 mount. He was joined in victory lane by Shane Golobic with the BCRA/WMR/USAC Midgets, Hunter Kinney with the BCRA Lightning Sprints and Ryan Peter with the Red Hawk Resort + Casino Pure Stocks. Opening night winner Andy Forsberg led the initial lap of the Thompson's Family of Dealerships Winged Sprint Car feature on Saturday. Dominic Gorden wasted little time blasting his way into the top spot however, and after that he kept the 20-car field at bay. Gorden, who earned his first career Placerville Speedway win last August during the Forni-Humphreys Classic, motored off to grab the checkered flag after 25-laps of racing. Forsberg brought home a runner-up finish while fending off youngster Austin Wood during the later stages of the contest. Wood crossed the stripe in third, followed by Max Mittry and Tony Gomes in the top five. The race for second through fifth provided some of the most entertainment during the main event. Rounding out the top 10 were Chance Grasty, Josh Young, Shane Hopkins, Joey Ancona and Tanner Carrick. A healthy 35 car field was in action for the "Prospectors Pursuit" on Saturday. Jodie Robinson began the evening by earning the ADCO Driveline & Custom Exhaust Fast Time Award with a blistering lap of 10.581. Shane Golobic prevailed in Saturday night's inaugural running of the new BCRA/WMR California Super Series, topping a 25-car turnout in the event co-sanctioned by the USAC Avanti Windows & Doors Western States Midgets. TJ Smith took the lead into turn one with Golobic sliding into second. 2024 BCRA Midget champion Caden Sarale of Stockton drove underneath Broedy Graham of Bakersfield for third on the second lap down the backstretch. Smith led Golobic into lapped traffic before a red flag for Graham flipping in turn one. 15-year-old Jett Yantis of Bakersfield challenged Sarale for third on the restart. Golobic drove to the inside of Smith to challenge for the lead on lap 11 but was unable to make the pass down the backstretch. Dale Johnston of Olivehurst flipped in turn one for the next stoppage on lap 13. Golobic charged to the outside of Smith on the restart. He led by a nose down the front stretch to lead lap 14, then completed the pass on lap 15 in turn 4. Golobic sailed to a three second advantage to win the inaugural race for the BCRA/WMR Super Series, co-sanctioned by USAC. Citrus Heights racer Hunter Kinney put on a clinic with the Bay Cities Racing Association Lightning Sprints on Saturday. Kinney was dominant aboard the Savage Racing No. 3f during the program and led every lap en route to the win. Defending series champion Greg Dennett tallied a runner up finish ahead of Jake Morgan, Dakota Albright and Matt Land. Just like Kinney, Rio Linda's Ryan Peter was ultra impressive with the Red Hawk Resort + Casino Pure Stocks at the "Prospectors Pursuit." Tommy Sturgeon led the opening circuit until Peter charged by for the top spot on lap two. He had his way with things up front, as six-time track champion Nick Baldwin moved his way forward. Baldwin got into second with 14 laps complete and looked to challenge the leader. Peter was calm, cool and collected up front though, and crossed the Ron Stahl checkered flag for his fourth career Pure Stock victory at Placerville Speedway. Baldwin, Jason Palmer, Kevin Jinkerson and Tyler Lightfoot completed the top five. Placerville Speedway continues its 60th anniversary season this coming Saturday April 12th with the "Tilford Tribute" race. On hand will be the Kings Meats Ltd. Late Models, the Red Hawk Resort + Casino Pure Stocks, the Mountain Democrat Mini Trucks and the West Coast Pro Stocks. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. RETURNS TO ACTION SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Chino, CA, April 3, 2025) After a brief break in his 2025 racing schedule, Eddie Tafoya Jr. returns to action this Saturday night when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series returns to its home track, Perris Auto Speedway. The race will be the ninth of the season for Tafoya and his third with CRA. Spectator gates to watch the affable star compete against a full field of 410 sprint cars will open at 5:00 p.m., with racing scheduled to begin at 7:00. Tafoya, a 27-year-old who resides in Chino Hills, California, began the season in February with six Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series races. He returned west for a USAC/CRA race on the Mohave Valley Raceway's 1/3 mile banked oval on February 22nd. The race at the track, located on the Arizona side of the Colorado River, garnered the veteran driver his best finish of the year thus far when he placed fifth. A week later at Perris, a good qualifying effort earned Tafoya the seventh-best time on the lightning-fast Riverside County half-mile clay oval. He then came home third in his heat and started the main event in third. However, he mysteriously slipped back in the field at the outset of the 30-lap race. Afterward, Tafoya revealed that his lap belt had popped loose. It took the race to be over a quarter of the way through before a yellow flag was thrown, and the talented driver could secure the belt. By that time, the damage was done, and he ended up 13th. Tafoya is looking forward to a better result when he returns to his home track on Saturday. Since the start of the 2021 campaign, he has contested 31 main events at Perris. In those, he has 20 top 10 finishes. Those 20 came in 26 USAC/CRA starts. The six times Tafoya did not finish in the first 10 mostly came from being in the wrong place at the wrong time and getting caught up in someone else's error. Of the aforementioned 20 top 10s, six have been top five finishes. Of those, Tafoya's best USAC/CRA result at The PAS was a third in 2021. Even though he is not racing for points in 2025, in two races, Tafoya sits 16th in the standings with 103 markers. That equals 51.5 points a night. Pro-rated, if he scored those points in the two races he did not attend, he would currently be ranked eighth, even with the lap belt faux pas at the last race. To see Tafoya in action on Saturday, Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. Tickets for those 13 and over are $35.00. For seniors 65 and older, the cost is $30.00. Kids 6-12 are $10.00, and children five and under are free. The fairgrounds charge $20.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available at tix.com or by calling 1-800-595-4849. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the city of Perris. - BRODY ROA BACK ON TRACK WITH USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Cypress, CA, April 3, 2025) Brody Roa will return to the battleground when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC CRA Sprint Cars visit the Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday, April 5th. The race will be the second of the current campaign for the 2023 series champion. Spectator gates at the "Southern California Home of Major League Sprint Car Racing" will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will begin at 7:00. Roa, aka "The Pride of Garden Grove," returned to action on March 1st at Perris after a nearly six-month layoff due to a serious hand injury. After qualifying 14th best in the stout 25-car field, he started and finished second in his 10-lap heat race on the lightning-quick half-mile clay oval. With his injured hand passing the stress test and feeling fine, it was then time to turn on the talent in the A main. For the main event, Roa rolled off from the 13th position in the 30-lap race. The veteran driver, who won the 2019 USAC Southwest Series championship, had his work cut out for him. Once the race began, he found himself embroiled in a wild, crowd-pleasing mid-pack battle. In the second half of the race, he got into a groove and began passing car after car. When the Steve Russell checkered flag ended the affair, Roa was one of the fastest cars on the track, and he had moved all the way up to fifth. He passed more cars than any other driver and was rewarded with the Jim and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award. Despite the fact that it was his first full race since last Memorial Day weekend when he finished third in the Salute to Indy at Perris, and it was his first full race getting used to his new engine, the veteran driver was very impressive. - Prospectors Pursuit brings Winged Sprint Cars, Midgets, Lightning Sprints and Pure Stocks to Placerville
Placerville, CA…The Berco Redwood championship season continues this Saturday at Placerville Speedway with an exciting trio of Open Wheel divisions being joined by the Red Hawk Resort + Casino Pure Stocks. After hosting the Sprint Car Challenge Tour last weekend, the El Dorado County Fairgrounds bullring is set to resume the Berco Redwood/ Hoosier Tire/ Coors Light championship point season at the "Prospectors Pursuit." The Thompson's Family of Dealerships Winged 360 Sprint Cars are ready for their second point race of the season on Saturday. Auburn's Andy Forsberg, the 10-time track champ, picked up his 73rd Winged 360 victory at the track on opening night. It turned out to be a close battle to the finish between himself and 15-year-old Austin Wood of Sacramento. Both Forsberg and Wood ran in the top five with SCCT last week and figure to be among the front runners at the Prospectors Pursuit. Lincoln's Tanner Carrick, Suisun City's Chance Grasty and Redding's Max Mittry finished third through fifth respectively at the opener two weeks ago. The Red Hawk Resort + Casino Pure Stocks also contest their second point race of 2025 on Saturday. Oakley's Nick Baldwin showed that he is still the man to beat on opening night by snagging his 33rd career Placerville triumph. Diamond Springs' Kevin Jinkerson has been a mark of consistency for the last several years and ran second on opening night ahead of Tommy Sturgeon, Wayne Trimble and Tyler Lightfoot. Saturday's Prospector Pursuit marks the debut race for the new California Super Series featuring the Bay Cities Racing Association and Western Midget Racing. Adding to the excitement will be the USAC Western States Midgets, as all three of the Midget organizations in the Golden State take part in a "Nor-Cal Challenge." Rounding out the card will be the BCRA Lightning Sprints, who also open their 2025 campaign. Livermore's Greg Dennet captured three wins last season en route to the title. Tickets and Details: Grandstand seating at the Prospectors Pursuit will be general admission on Saturday April 5th, except for the reserved seats allocated to season ticket holders that are marked. Adult tickets cost $20, while seniors 62+, military and juniors 12-17 will be $18. Kids 6-11 cost $8 and those five and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online via https://www.eventsprout.com/event/psr040525 The pit gate will open at noon, with the front gate opening at 4pm. Hirst Home Team Happy Hour is offered until 6pm in the grandstands featuring live music with discounted Coors Light and Coors Original at the beer booth. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING HEADS NORTH FOR TWO RACES THIS WEEKEND
(Lakeside, CA, March 24, 2025) Lakeside, California's Sexton Gatlin Racing will wrap up a busy month of March with a trek to Ocean Speedway in Watsonville on the 28th and the Merced Speedway on the 29th for races in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series. The trek north will take SGR 454 miles from its San Diego County base for the Friday portion of the weekend doubleheader. On Saturday, the team will head 100 miles south from Watsonville to Merced for Saturday's race on the Doug Lockwood-promoted track. SGR had last weekend off after competing in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series during the California Mid-Winter Fair at the Imperial Valley Fairgrounds on the 14th and 15th of the month. The two nights of racing at the track located just north of the USA-Mexico border brought a mixed bag of results for the longtime Southern California team. The Friday portion of the show at the track, which old-time fans still refer to as El Centro, started off well for the team when 20-year-old Grant clicked off the seventh fastest time in the 28-car field. Even though he was less than a half second slower, Brent timed in 19th best. Brent's night ended on the first lap of the third heat race when he was battling for the lead. Starting on the outside of the front row, contact with the car on the inside sent him into a series of nasty flips as he came off turn two. He climbed out of the car unscathed, but the tumble ended up finishing his car for the night. "I am not sure after watching the replay," Sexton answered when asked what triggered the flip. " After I watched the replay, someone may have caught the inside berm and caught my left rear, but I do not know. It is hard to say, really. We could have been ready, but with just two classes there, time was short. I just figured why push it with a two-day show. Let's focus on getting it fixed right and be ready for the next night. It really was not damaged too badly for as hard as I flipped. Front axle, bent the torque tube, and rear bumper." Grant ended up sixth in the heat. That sent him to the B main, where he needed to finish sixth or better to continue to the A. He did so comfortably by finishing third. That put the young driver in the 30-lap finale. However, car issues plagued him, and he finished 19th. With the flip in his past, the Saturday portion of the show saw Brent turn in his best USAC qualifying effort to date. His 13.389 was the 11th fastest lap of the 26 cars on hand. He followed that by competing in the toughest heat race of the weekend. The veteran racer fought hard and managed to hold the final transfer spot until the last lap when he slipped back to sixth. That outcome placed him on the front row of the B main, and getting more used to the 410 each night, he brought it home third to earn a ticket to his first USAC/CRA main event of the year. In the main, the wily veteran started 11th. After some see-sawing forward and backward in the race, he ended up 14th. While he wanted more, he was happy with the night, and he loves life as a 410 sprint car driver. "It was my best qualifying to date with USAC." Sexton proudly stated. "I am kind of setting some goals for this year, like qualifying better with USAC, because that is everything. Finish a little better than last year. Last year, I was usually 18th to 24th. This year, I want to get near the top 10. I would like to have finished closer to the top 10 at Imperial, but I will take the 14th place." "I do actually," Sexton continued when asked if he felt this year is like a rejuvenation of his career. "I am having a lot of fun. Especially with this 410. It is all a learning curve, jumping up to a 410. I am enjoying it." San Diego's AJ Bender, who has driven SGR cars and won in the past in lightning competition, jumped into Grant's car on Saturday to see what it was like to wheel a Triple X. However, the driver who finished fourth in USAC/CRA points in 2024, was feeling the car out for the first time, and he exited the A main early. "I am looking forward to this weekend," Sexton offered about racing at Ocean and Merced. "We have run Merced with the lightning sprint, but I have never been to Ocean before. We will have to figure out gearing and all of that stuff. Hopefully, we will come out of the box strong." To see SGR in action this weekend, the Ocean Speedway is located at 2601 E. Lake in Watsonville, California. For times and ticket information, call the track office at 831-688-7223. On Saturday at the Merced Speedway, gates will open at 5:00 p.m., and racing will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for those 17 and older are $25.00. Juniors, aged 11-16, get in for $10.00. Tickets for kids 6-10 are $5.00. Children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Merced. The track website is http://www.mercedspeedway.net/ and the office phone number is 209-600-8382. The final SGR racer on the weekend at Imperial was eager teen Braydin Collie of El Cajon, California. Racing on a track where he recorded a second-place finish in 2024, things did not go quite as well on the weekend with the SoCal Lightning Sprint Cars. On Friday, he looked impressive in winning his heat race, but he flipped on the back stretch during lap three of the main event and finished 11th. Twenty-four hours later, the talented teen placed 11th again when the center splines on the right rear stripped out. Big news from Sexton Gatling Racing is the fact that they are going to be a CSI certified shock dealer for the West Coast. The team bought Mel Murphy's shock dyno and crew member David Bezio flew out to Indy on Monday to study with CSI in Indiana. "We will be open right away (when Bezio gets back)," Sexton commented. "I have the dyno and we have been doing our own shocks. David is there taking the course so we can be a certified dealer. We are excited about that." Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. East County Electric Works, Keys Brothers, BR Motorsports, Maxima Oil, Automated Interiors, Valley Lubricant Services, Sexton Fire Protection, BK Wings, and Troy Dirt. - Tribute to Al Hinds 'Take 2' opens 60th anniversary season at Placerville Speedway
Placerville, CA…Coming off a rainout last weekend Placerville Speedway is now ready to open its 60th anniversary season with the 22nd annual "Tribute to Al Hinds" tackling the red clay on Saturday. Divisions set to kick-off the Berco Redwood/ Hoosier Tires championship season will include the Thompson's Family of Dealerships Winged Sprint Cars, the Red Hawk Resort + Casino Pure Stocks, the Mountain Democrat Mini Trucks and the Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Tour. Please note the grandstands open at 4pm this season, one hour later than previous years. Live music and Coors Light/ Coors Banquet Happy Hour will continue to be held from 4-6pm. The Tribute to Al Hinds began in 2004 following the passing of early track promoter and mentor, Al Hinds, a longtime Placerville resident and true race fan that touched the lives of many. Hinds was the second promoter of Placerville Speedway. He took operation of the track with business partner Richard Hirst from its founder, Bruno Romani, in 1968, three years after it first opened when the facility was built around an existing community football field. The operator of a local machine shop by trade, Hinds loved the community where he lived. In his final years of life, he enjoyed sitting with some of his best friends every night in the grandstands at Placerville Speedway and loved watching young talent make a name for themselves in the sport. The inaugural Tribute to Al Hinds was captured by Roger Crockett, while last season saw Shane Golobic snag his initial triumph in the event. Track champions last season with the Thompson's Dealerships Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Red Hawk Resort + Casino Pure Stocks and Mountain Democrat Mini Trucks included Auburn's Andy Forsberg, Oakley's Nick Baldwin and Placerville's Mike Miller respectively. This Saturday's event marks round two for the traveling Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Tour. Elk Grove's Jake Morgan snagged the Hunt Tour opener at the Stockton Dirt Track recently over Bob Newberry. The series always puts on a can't miss show at the Placerville bullring. Tickets and Details: Grandstand seating at the Tribute to Al Hinds will be general admission on Saturday March 22nd, except for the reserved seats allocated to season ticket holders that are marked. Adult tickets cost $20, while seniors 62+, military and juniors 12-17 will be $18. Kids 6-11 cost $8 and those five and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online via https://www.eventsprout.com/event/psr032225 The pit gate will open at noon, with the front gate opening at 4pm. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HAS A DIFFERENT NIGHT AT THE PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY SPRINT CAR OPENER
(Chino, CA, March 6, 2025) Three weeks after it was initially planned, Perris Auto Speedway finally hosted its first Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race of the 2025 season last Saturday night. One of the racers in the challenging 25-car field was Eddie Tafoya Jr. The veteran driver had a good start to the night before a crazy faux pas saw him end up 13th in the main event. As always, Tafoya, 27, was in the stunningly beautiful #51T that stands out from the rest of the cars in the pit area. Time trials saw the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year stop the clocks at 16.668 on the cold, windy night. That was the seventh quickest time of the evening on the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval. That put him inside the second row in the first heat race. Tafoya steered the Rider Racing Engine/DRC to a third-place finish in the tough 10-lapper. Tafoya's third-place finish in the heat garnered him the same inside row two starting spot for the 30-lap main event. It also gave the team high hopes for Perris' first sprint feature of the 2025 campaign. However, he mysteriously started to slip backward early in the race. "I finally put together the first half of the night and put myself in a good position," Tafoya lamented. "I took the green flag and actually my lap belt popped loose. I have never had that happen. So, I did not even think about stopping, I was just thinking about not coming out (of the car). Unfortunately, it took seven laps or whatever it was to get to a caution so I could fix it. By that time I was in eighth." "After that, I was just messing around with people too long. My car was missing the setup a little bit. Kind of deceiving (the track) when we run with the hobby stocks and stuff like that. It definitely wasn't tight enough (the car) and the seat belt coming loose did not help at all. It all just kind of fell apart really quick." Tafoya, who first raced at Perris when he won the track's Young Gun Sprint Car title in 2018, ended up in a very entertaining mid pack battle. The cars involved in that war see-sawed back and forth as they jockeyed for position in the 30-lapper. In the end, he came out with a disappointing, but hard earned, 13th place finish. "I do, but starting up front it was pretty frustrating not staying up there," Tafoya answered when queried if he likes racing in a tight pack. "I really didn't enjoy it too much while going backwards. It was definitely hard racing back there. Once you get hard racing mid-pack, you get slid and try to turn down, and there are two or three guys there with you. Stuff starts happening pretty quick." Things can happen quickly as Tafoya said, but, like usual, the smooth racer rolled his immaculate car into the hauler at the end of the chilly evening. Despite not racing for points, Tafoya is ranked eighth after two races in the USAC/CRA Series. With the exception of planning to compete in all of the Perris races, Tafoya does not have a set schedule in 2025. The team will race when it wants to. A lot depends on his parents' work schedule, and how many jobs his father has lined up. If things work out, he hopes to head to Indiana this year to race with the USAC National Sprint Car Series. Tafoya's next planned race will be April 5th when the USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Cars return to their home track in Perris. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. IS BACK ON HIS HOME TRACK, PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY
(Chino, CA, February 27, 2025) For the first time in 2025 after a race, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will finally get to sleep in his own bed this Saturday night when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars visit Perris Auto Speedway. Last Saturday, night Tafoya recorded a well-earned fifth-place finish when the series opened its season at the Mohave Valley Raceway. That was the seventh race of the year for Tafoya with the first six being in Florida before last week's battle in Arizona. Starting the 30-lap main event in the 10th position on the 1/3 of a mile banked clay oval, Tafoya came charging in the final third of the race. Running around the ninth and 10th place spots through the halfway point, late in the affair the 27-year-old driver came on like a champion boxer in the late rounds. He steered the gorgeous #51T into seventh on lap 18. Manning the low line, he was still in seventh on lap 26, but picked off two more spots to place fifth The result gave Tafoya his third top-10 finish in six lifetime starts at Mohave. It was his best performance at the track since he came home third in his first race at the facility on April 23, 2022. Earlier in the night, getting to the A main took some extra work for the talented Chino Hills, California driver. He qualified 10 fastest with a 14.303. However, it came at a cost! The torque ball backed off during qualifying forcing the crew to change the entire torque tube and bell housing. In doing so, Tafoya was forced to miss his heat race while the crew thrashed on the car. With the repairs made, Tafoya started on the outside of row one in the 12-lap B main. He had to finish in the top six to transfer into the 30-lap A. He did that with room to spare by placing third and earning his e-ticket to drive in the 30-lap war. The fifth-place finish also sees Tafoya sitting in fifth in the series championship standings coming into the Perris race. The likeable driver will only be 19-points out of first place when he drives through the pit gate in the afternoon. In 2024, Tafoya started nine races at Perris. He had six top 10 finishes. His best outing came on September 21st when he placed sixth. He hopes to beat that result on Saturday. Spectator gates at Perris will open at 5:00 p.m. and the racing will get underway at 7:00. Tickets for Saturday's race are $35.00 for those ages 13 and over. Seniors 65 and over get in for $30.00. For kids 6-12, it is $10.00, and children five and under are free. With a small convenience fee, advance tickets are available online at tix.com or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not want to purchase advance tickets, plenty will be available at the ticket window on race night. The fairgrounds charge $20.00 for parking. The PAS is conveniently located on the freeway close Lake Perris Fairgrounds, home of the Southern California Fair, in nearby Riverside County. Take the 215 freeway. Exit at the Ramona Expressway and go three miles east to the fairgrounds. For directions online, the address to enter is 18700 Lake Perris Drive, and the zip code is 92571. - RICKY LEWIS SURGES TO PERRIS USAC CRA SPRINT CAR VICTORY
Regaining the lead from “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. on lap 18, Ricky Lewis (Oxnard, California) led the rest of the way to earn Saturday night’s Avanti Windows & Doors USAC CRA Sprint Car victory at California’s Perris Auto Speedway.
- JAKE SWANSON RETURNS HOME TO PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY THIS SATURDAY NIGHT
(Perris, CA, February 26, 2025) Fresh off a win in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series at the Mohave Valley Raceway last Saturday night, Southern California native Jake Swanson plans on being in three places when he jets back to the "Golden State" this week. Those three places are the drive-through window at an In N' Out Burgers, Mexican restaurants, and, most importantly, the victory circle at Perris Auto Speedway. The past Anaheim resident, who is now based out of Indiana, will be taking on the stars from the USAC/CRA series for the second week in a row. In addition to the powerful 410 sprint cars, the PAS Senior and Young Gun Sprints will also be in action along with the PASSCAR Street Stocks and Factory Stocks. Saturday's show will be the first sprint car race at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval since last November. Three weeks ago, on February 8th, the series was slated to open its 21st season at the track. However, persistent rain heading into that date left the infield looking like a mini version of nearby Lake Perris. That left track and series officials with no choice but to postpone the race, which will now be made up on November 1st. At Mohave, 31-year-old Swanson drove for the powerhouse Inland Rigging Team owned by Tom and Christy Dunkel. He will drive the same #17X car this week. It will be on the track where he cut his sprint car teeth when he captured the USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year title 13 years ago and where he scored his first USAC National Sprint Car Series win in an Oval Nationals preliminary in 2021. "They definitely have some of the best equipment out there," said Swanson, who first steered an Inland Rigging car for the Dunkel's in 2024. "He has put together a world-class operation when it comes to a sprint car team. They have the right people in place. The people who maybe do not have all of the experience are being trained in the right way. It is really cool to be a part of a program for somebody who really, genuinely cares about seeing it succeed and they are willing to do whatever it takes to do it in the right way." "They have entrusted me to work on the car a lot, and they have entrusted Jimmy May and Charlie Butcher to work on the cars. They have done a great job in training Aiden (the Dunkel's son). He is a young kid, but he is learning really, really quick. To see the amount of notes he makes when I am in town is pretty impressive. There are a handful of others, and everybody works really hard." "I couldn't be more excited," Swanson enthused about coming back to race where his sprint car career started. "I always love coming back to Perris. I always tell people that, in my opinion, it is the greatest racetrack in the country. It puts on some of the greatest races in all of the country. The fans are lucky to have that and watch the CRA stuff. I just wish we could share it to more of the country." While the quick trip west will mostly be about racing, Swanson has some yens to settle while in the Southland. "I pretty much have a strict diet of tacos and In N' Out in California," he laughed when asked what he looks forward to when he returns to So Cal. "I love the beach, but I don't get there very often. The Mexican food is definitely top tier on my list." Swanson, who is as busy off the track as he is on, plans to contest the entire USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series in 2025. He got off to a fine start in that series two weeks ago in Florida. In six races, driving his own car that features Inland Rigging as its prime sponsor, he placed in the top 10 five times with a best finish at the Ocala Speedway on the 12th. The results will see him eighth in points when the series picks up at Indiana's Paragon Speedway on April 4th. As well as racing in the National Sprint Car Series, Swanson will steer a car owned by past racer and noted car builder Bob East in the USAC Silver Crown Series. His first run in that car will come at the Terre Haute Action Track on April 13th. And when time permits, much to the chagrin of the USAC/CRA regulars, he will be back in the Inland Rigging #17X whenever he can get a break from his busy National schedule. That includes this Saturday at Perris, and the March 14th and 15th series show during the California Mid-Winter Fair at the Imperial Valley Raceway. In addition to 50-plus nights of National Sprint Cars and the Silver Crown ride, Swanson also hopes to get in some wing racing this year. He still does not have anything ironed out yet, but he has some plans in the works to do that. However, he has been so busy building up his USAC national team and other businesses that he has not yet set anything in stone. After last week's rainout, sprint cars and stock cars will begin their 2025 season at The PAS when the track hosts the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series along with the PAS Young Gun & Senior Sprints and the PASSCAR Street and Factory Stocks on March 1st. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. IS BACK ON THE ROAD TO ARIZONA
(Chino, CA, February 21, 2025) In the last three weeks, sprint car racer Eddie Tafoya Jr. has only been home for three days. Most of the time away he was on the road driving to the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car races in Florida and then turning around and heading back to his Chino Hills, California home. Saturday morning, he will be back on the road for the 240-mile trek to Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series 21st season opener. Tafoya, 27, faced a grueling schedule racing six straight nights in the "Sunshine State." The first two evenings were at the Volusia Speedway Park. He followed those races with four nights of high-speed competition at the Ocala Speedway. While fast the first three nights, including the ninth quickest time in qualifying at the Volusia opener, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year missed the transfer from the B to the A main by one spot two times. Things fared better for Tafoya and the #51T in the final three races at Ocala when he made the A main each time. "It was good," Tafoya commented on his Florida trip. "We came out of the gate swinging. We were 10th in hot laps and ninth in qualifying (at the first race at Volusia). I found myself one spot out every time I was on the track whether it was a heat race or a B main. At Ocala, I missed the first night (main). We took what we learned and put it towards the next nights and made the next three mains. So, that was good." Making the main event at Ocala can be tough on someone who does not have a lot of laps on the track. Tafoya fits that bill well, having only raced on the track two times previously in 2023. The track is an odd shape and its two ends are totally different. "It is definitely awkward, I guess you could say," Tafoya spoke about Ocala. "One and two is real sweeping and bouncy. Three and four is more you have to pitch it sideways and drive off. You have to get in tune with the track and get in tune to what your car is going to do." Tafoya and his father, past sprint car racer Eddie Tafoya Sr., started the cross-country return trip home last Sunday and arrived at their Chino Hills residence at about 9:30 on Wednesday. By Thursday, it was back in the shop to prepare the car for this weekend's battle in Arizona. "Luckily, I kept my nose clean while we were out there," Tafoya happily said. "So, just normal maintenance for this week. "Washing and stuff like that. We should be getting it turned around here quickly. We were in a good spot (performance-wise) when we left off. So, we should not have to do too much." Racing against the national series drivers pits Tafoya against the best traditional racers in the world. Competing with them fine-tunes his performances for when he races in the West. One of the differences he notes racing against the national drivers is you cannot wait. If you do, you are going to pay. "It is definitely different," Tafoya said when comparing the national vs western drivers. "Here, you kind of feel everyone out and see what they are going to do and where they are going to go. If you do that there, they are going to be gone. There is no catching them. There is no downtime to figure anything out. You have just got to go." "We have some good momentum coming in and I just need to keep driving like I did there," the well-spoken driver said. "If I do, we should be in a good spot. I think we will have a good show at Mohave. We are usually a real good car out of the box when we get there. I think the only times I have not run good there is when I have had motor issues." In six previous races at Mohave, Tafoya's best finish was a third-place result in April of 2023. In three appearances at the Arizona dirt track in 2024, his best outing was a sixth in April. The Florida trip saw the drivers on the track for seven consecutive nights. A night of practice at Ocala before racing six nights in a row. However, the team had a little bit of time for some fun. "Luckily, we got there two days early, so we went to the Supercross race in Tampa," Tafoya laughed. "We did a gator boat one morning and some local stuff when we had some time. We were staying on the beach at Daytona, so it was just kind of nice to hang out, relax, and get ready for the week." Adult tickets for Saturday's race at Mohave Valley, which is located five minutes from the Colorado River and 20 minutes from downtown Laughlin, Nevada, are $25.00. Kids' tickets are $15.00, and children 5 and under are free. Parking is free. Spectator gates will open at 3:30 on Saturday, and the first race will take the green flag at 5:30. The Mohave Valley Raceway is located at 2750 Laguna Road in Mohave Valley, Arizona. The track's website is https://www.mohavevalleyraceway.com/. The office phone number is 928-346-3000. After Saturday, Tafoya will return to action when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars race a mere 36 miles from his home at Perris Auto Speedway Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram eddietafoya51. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HEADS TO FLORIDA FOR USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SERIES OPENERS
(Chino, CA, February 5, 2025) Being out of the saddle for three months, Southern California racer Eddie Tafoya Jr. was getting anxious for some sprint car action. On Tuesday morning, he and his father, Eddie Tafoya Sr., began to scratch that itch when they pointed the Specialty Fasteners team hauler east and began a trek from one side of the country to the other to participate in USAC Winter Dirt Games XVI in Florida. Beginning on Monday night February 9th, Tafoya will be competing against the best traditional sprint car drivers in the country for six straight nights. Tafoya and his father were making the cross-country journey alone and planned on arriving in Florida on Friday afternoon. After watching Supercross in Tampa on Saturday, it would be seven straight nights of work, beginning with a Sunday night practice session at the Ocala Speedway. From there, the team will make the one-hour journey east to Barberville and the high-speed 56-year-old Volusia County Speedway half-mile. Tafoya will race there on Monday the 10th and Tuesday the 9th. After the Tuesday race at Volusia, Tafoya will head back to Ocala to begin four straight nights of competition on the 3/8 mile Ocala oval. After Saturday's race, the team will return to its Southern California base. Winter Dirt Games is nothing new for Chino Hills, California veteran driver Tafoya. Two years ago, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year made his first trip to the land of alligators and swamps for his initial raid on Winter Dirt Games. He was knocked out of the first race with a fuel problem, and another night was lost to rain. Of the three nights he got in, he qualified for the A main two times. He ended up with a 13th at Volusia after starting 16th. Four nights later he finished 21st on the tricky Ocala track. While cruising through Las Cruces, New Mexico on Tuesday, Tafoya took the time to talk about the upcoming races. "I like Volusia a lot," the talented 27-year-old racer enthused. "It is big and fast. It is in my wheelhouse of tracks I like to go to. Ocala is fun, it is just a lot more challenging setup wise. You have to take good notes and make sure you are doing the right thing to find grip around that place. It is one of the few places you go to where you kind of have to set up your car for one half of the track and just deal with the other half because they are so different. It definitely makes you a better driver. You have to figure out how to manipulate your race car." " I am pretty stoked," Tafoya continued when asked about starting the season in the "Sunshine State." "We decided to do something different. We had a break last year and decided to stay home. We thought about it over this off season and kind of had an itch to go National racing again. We race so many nights in a row, it is kind of a good way to jump start the season and get into gear quick." Racing six nights a week in any class is a grind and requires a lot of extra attention. The week in Florida will be taxing on the driver and his team making sure everything is perfect when he hits the track. "Probably just making sure everything is good to go every night," Tafoya mentioned when asked what was the hardest part of racing six straight nights. "We have a pretty small crew. So, we have to take the whole first half of the day to do some maintenance and all of that fun stuff and make sure we are ready to go for the night. Hopefully, we do not tear too much stuff up, and we get some good seat time." Like he said, the crew is small. He and his father, Eddie Sr., a one-time draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates, are making the cross-country drive by themselves. Malyssa Young will join the team when she flies into Florida. The beautiful #51T Tafoya will be wheeling is the same car he raced in USAC/CRA in 2024. Over the winter, he framed it and completely rebuilt it to make sure everything is fresh, tight, and square to give himself a good start to the 2025 campaign. After Florida, Tafoya is not sure what his plans will be for the rest of the 10-month campaign. While he hopes to make all of the races at Perris, starting in Florida comes at a cost. The first Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA series opener at Perris is the same night as the Florida finale. Race #2 of the USAC/CRA season will take place at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway just seven days later on February 22nd. Fans who cannot make it to Florida for the Winter Dirt Games can watch all of the action on Flo Racing at the following link: https://flosports.link/usac. They can also listen live on the USAC app or online at http://mixlr.com/usac-official/.
